Italian Job: Italy convicts 22 CIA agents

From NBC’s Pete Williams
In the world's first criminal trial of CIA officials over the practice known as "rendition," an Italian judge today found nearly two-dozen American citizens guilty of kidnapping. The U.S. has used renditions to take suspected terrorists from one foreign country to another for questioning or to the U.S. None of the U.S. defendants were ever in the courtroom: they were tried in absentia.

The case involved a radical Egyptian cleric, Abu Omar, who was picked up on a street in Milan in February 2003 and taken to Egypt. When he was released four years later, he claimed he was brutally tortured by the Egyptian intelligence service. Italian authorities then prosecuted the Americans and members of Italy's military intelligence service.

Today, the judge sentenced 22 of the Americans to five years in prison. The other, a former CIA station chief in Milan, was sentenced to eight years. Three other Americans were originally charged, but the judge ruled today that they had diplomatic immunity. Because they were not in Italy during the trial, they remain free.

The trial has been a sore point in relations between the U.S. and Italy.  Despite calls from international human rights groups, the Italians have not sought the extradition of the Americans. Prosecutors there say they will try again, but that will be up to Italy's justice ministry.

NBC’s Jim Miklaszewski adds the response from the CIA:

In response to the Italian court convictions of 23 Americans in absentia for the "kidnapping" of a Muslim cleric in Milan in 2003, CIA spokesman Paul Gimigliano would only say, "The CIA has not made any comment on the allegations surrounding Abu Omar."

The Italian courts had found that the 23 Americans had broken Italy's kidnapping laws in the apparent "rendition" when they allegedly grabbed Abu Omar off the streets of Milan and flew him to Egypt where he claims he was tortured.

We are told that either State Department, the National Security Council, or both may issue a broad statement on today's convictions.

Valerie Plame one of the agents?
I guess our 'rendition' of the facts is different than theirs?  And Bush made us safer and more respected how exactly?  Perhaps Cheney should get off the media circuit here and go and defend these folks who were just carrying out his orders?

Nah,...It is just so much fun watching him lie about his involvement; plus we all know he will never 'own' his presidency.
And in the US, a bill of one trillion dollars was sent to Italy for goods and services provided to free them from fascism during WW-2. Payment is due at the end of the month.
Has President Obama apologized to Italy yet?
George W. Bush and Dick Cheney are the ones who should be hauled to The Hague and prosecuted!!
Everything goes back to September 11th.

For Glen Beck to continually exploit 9/11, Keith Olbermann was right. This Beck guy should go straight to hell.

As should Dick and Liz Cheney. What in heaven's name did these people ever get right? Absolutely nothing.
My guess is the Pope is behind all this.
Unfortunately, Dickhead "I can't remember" Cheney has not been convicted yet. It would be justice to the world to have "Dickhead' raise his hell in a cell in the Hague.

Fiesty and Jeff and the rest of our gang, sorry I over slept and missed the hate fest this morning. But you guys held the forte down very well.

Jeff, I used to live in Evanston; I wonder if we know each other
Well Dick,I guess you will not be traveling to Italy any time soon. It's time for our government to start bring these war criminals to justice,Dickey,Georgie,Rummy,Condi,Wolfie,Rovie, and the good folks at Blackwater, and Hallaburton, and Cica.Time for the chickenhawks to pay there debt,IN full.Straws with that waterboard.
Well, Italy's off limits for Bush and Cheney!! Bush best check Italy off his list of places to give his "motivational speeches" - then again, I hope he goes!!
Just read an article about this.  It's a wake up call that the actions of the previous administration have resulted in CIA officials being convicted by a foreign government, in absentia, for following orders of Bush/Cheney, most likely Cheney's orders.  Wonder what Dick and Liz will say to twist this story as not part of the VP's legacy.

-------------

Omar was made to repeatedly watch a video of Janet Reno dancing around in a nightie.
Maybe President Obama can buy off the Italians with say, a set of 25 DVDs.
Looks like a job for Hillary! Send her over to Italy to smooth things over, take the rough edges off. By the time she's done, we'll be at war with the Italians.
HANG 'EM HIGH !!

More evidence of CRIMINALITY by the Bush Regime

Torture, War Crimes, Wars of Aggression...
George Bush turned America into a Rogue Nation

Who cares. What have the Italians ever contributed to the world? Bunch of slackers.
What - Didn't they get the "were sorry" letter from Obama???

Supreme Leader Rejects 'Perverted' Talks With Obama
TEHRAN: Iran's Supreme Leader, spurning what he described as several personal overtures from US President Barack Obama, has warned that negotiating with the US was ''naive and perverted'' and said Iranian politicians should not be ''deceived'' into starting such talks.

The speech came on the eve of the anniversary marking 30 years since Islamic students stormed the US embassy in Tehran, taking 55 Americans hostage for 444 days.

Obama is willing to talk to murders and dictators - they say NO

Obama is afraid of talking to FOX

When is OBie going to get Michelle to give him his gonads back - he cant even get his mother-in-law out of the white house?

Why is Obama going after black law makers?  Why are the only lawmakers being investigated by the Obama administration - Black?

I bet MSNBC and the FR overlords would be covering this if Bush were doing the same thing when he was Prez.!!!!
HEY! Fiat just bought Chrysler. The same Chrysler that Uncle Sam spent BILLIONS to bail out along with Chrysler Financial, now part of GMAC, and back at the public trough for more billions.

Some gratitude! What's the matter with you. Is this how you turned out? A Hollywood finocchio that cries like a woman.
Looks like potential tourism to Italy has decreased by 23 persons.

This would never have happened if Reagan was in charge.
I don't care who you are, when you knowingly break the law you must pay the price.  Thanks George Bush for giving our country this.
Does this mean Obie will stop wearing those $1500 Italian loafers??
Maybe we should have Cheney talk to the Italians? Make them an offer they can't refuse.
Funny Facists calling the kettle black.
firstread, nothing like putting up threads and leaving the comments empty
Dick Cheyney led the way by convicting a CIA officer when he was in office republicans all together FORGET THE PAST FORGET THE PAST clikc your heels and away you go. Lets hear it for the SS they were only following orders WTF
This may be the only way that people are prosecuted for their "crimes" when they followed what the Bush/Cheny whitehouse set forth as the new way that America would go after those who we thought attacked us.  I don't see our government doing anything about this, so it is left up to the other countries to prosecute.
We have to obey the laws of this world when interact with other countries.  The Genevoa Convention was signed by the US and we are supposed to abide by that.  Regardless of weither an attorney general said it was OK to torture, kidnap, kill or whatever they were doing.  When you behave like the terrorists, don't you become one??
Screw the italian courts.  Lets just hope Obama don't try and send these CIA officers to Italy if the Italian government request extradition.  No American acting in an official capacity should ever be tried in a foreign court.
Where are you eric and anita? feisty can't work at acorn and spew her lies and hate on this site all the time. She needs help, especially after last night's butt whipping.

Did notice it shut her up for a little while though. I hate that, she's a republican's best friend.
Sorry but we must attone see Cheney and his daughter thought things were funny and they brought this upon these agent if guilty well crimes are crimes and nobody is above the law but innocent until proven guilty bet somebody will be asking a Democrat fopr help now just as the rest of those who guilty of crimes, this can make it un-safe for  us to travel abroad but some say one guy had a secret army and I see why Valerie quit but answer these allegations who ever was in charge then.Extradite who boy to much dark activities or conspirities or conspirators but you can't blame this on President Obama this time Boehner.
"The CIA has not made any comment on the allegations surrounding Abu Omar."

Except that he was caught while driving a FIAT.
FIAT now owns the US taxpayer bailed-out Chrysler Corp.
no comments?  odd, i wrote one.
Okay cons here is your chance. Bomb, Bomb, Bomb Rome. Teach those Italians not to mess with us. Right?

Unfortunately there is a certain amout of risk when one does things in other countries that may not be legal there. In most cases they don't get caught but these guys did and it is too bad. I am sure they were good agents. Five years will go fast and they'll probably get a "club fed" kind of prison anyway. Hillary might even be able to negotiate their release.
I think I have found a nice spot to release our Gitmo prisoners, Rome! I'm sure they can find a nice cozy place for them all, especially since they are so sensitive to human rights abuses.
