2009: The post-mortems

Congressional Democrats seem to have two different ideas on what Tuesday’s elections meant for their party, the Washington Post says. “[M]oderate and conservative Democrats took a clear signal from Tuesday's voting, warning that the results prove that independent voters are wary of Obama's far-reaching proposals and mounting spending, as well as the growing federal debt. Liberal lawmakers, meanwhile, said the party's shortcoming came in moving too slowly on health-care reform and other items that would satisfy a base becoming disenchanted with the failure to deliver rapid change in government.”

Roll Call notes that moderates' opinions on health reform legislation didn't change because of the elections.

The New York Times front-pages, “Republicans emerged from Tuesday’s elections energized by victories in Virginia and New Jersey, but their leaders immediately began maneuvering to avoid a prolonged battle with conservative activists over what the party stands for and how to regain power…  Despite Mr. Hoffman’s loss [in NY-23], many conservatives promised to press on with opposition to centrist Republican candidates. That vow intensified concerns among party leaders that the opportunities they see coming out of Tuesday’s results could be dimmed by intramural battles over whether to reach for the political center or do more to motivate the base on the party’s right.”

The Washington Post adds that the GOP’s “fortunes in next year's midterm elections may rest in its ability to harness a populist wave of voter discontent with Washington and government spending. But the surprising Democratic victory in the New York congressional election -- despite the intervention of conservative activists -- for a seat the GOP held for more than a century was sobering evidence that rallying behind conservative candidates may not be the answer.”

Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee said there’s room in the Republican Party’s tent for people like Dede Scozzafava, the resigned Republican nominee in the NY-23 special election, but added, “It doesn’t mean I have to support all of them equally.” On those with pro-choice and pro-same-sex marriage views, Huckabee said, “Can they be Republican? Yes. Will they get my support? No.” However, Huckabee added that he is against third-party candidates, encouraging voters to pick [the party] that you like a little more than you like the other, that you hate the least, get involved in it, and change it.”

Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour (R), chairman of the Republican Governors Association, denied an ideological rift between conservative and moderate Republicans, but he said the national party must respect the will of voters in their choices for state Republican leaders -- rather than get involved to the level it did in New York’s 23rd district special election. Speaking to voters across the country on a “comeback” conference call, Barbour said, “The news media, particularly the left, they want to act like there’s some great war going on in the Republican Party between moderate Republicans and conservative Republicans.” Regarding the NY-23 race, he said the “crime” there “was the state party chairman allowed a handful of party chairman to pick our nominee… It would have made me mad too if they had tried that in Mississippi.”

Barbour encouraged voters to accept that Republican candidates in next year’s 37 gubernatorial elections will not be one-size-fits all. “We have to realize we’re not going to elect Haley Barbour governor of Vermont. They’re going to elect a Republican governor less conservative than I am.”

The Boston Globe’s take on Tuesday: "Democratic moderates who will determine the fate of much of President Obama’s domestic agenda heard an early warning from this week’s off-year elections: Congress had better do something about the economy, or sitting lawmakers will lose their jobs in 2010.”

Here's a piece by one of us that argues while Republicans got a much-needed boost and Democrats feel good about a congressional race in Upstate New York out of Tuesday night, all three races had much more to do with local issues.

More evidence of a tough climate for incumbent executives? In Long Island, "Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi was hanging onto his job Wednesday by a slim 237-vote lead - with thousands of paper ballots still uncounted. Suozzi took 118,111 votes in Tuesday's election, with GOP challenger Edward Mangano coming close with 117,874 votes, a preliminary tally showed."

DEMOCRATS DON'T CHANGE --- CONTINUE WHAT YOU ARE DOING!

RIGHT ON!
"Despite Mr. Hoffman’s loss [in NY-23], many conservatives promised to press on with opposition to centrist Republican candidates. If the ultra-Conservatives who propped up Doug Hoffman continue to push further to the right instead of reaching towards the center they will have failed to learn one of the big lessons from Tuesday night...

..."Independents Decide Elections."
All this political back and forth, talk of anger/mood swings w/ voters and gotcha partisanship. Truely a sad commentary on what pretends to be a representative democracy. While the Oligarchy along w/ wallstreet and these well paid career politicians on both sides lap it up. We have become such a Bipolar country. What we need is a giant infusion of mood stablizers!
People are waking up to the Obama socialist takover. A handful of Dem victories does not mean anything, particularly on the East Coast.

Dems should prepare to have their clocks cleaned in the next few elections.
I DONT like George Bush and I am STILL waiting for an explanation as to where Bush's TRILLION dollar TARP went.
BUT that does not absolve Mr. Hope and Change, Mr. Transparency, of an explanation on where HE spent HIS TRILLION (plus) dollars. Stop blaming Bush for your screw ups Obama!

Uenmployment keeps going through the roof. GM & Chrysler are not out of the woods. Over 110 banks have failed in 2009 which is the highest number since 1992. So where are all these jobs Mr. President?
They celebrated the one year anniversary of the coronation of Caliph Osama Bin Biden and all we have to show for it is higher unemployment, more foreclosures, the highest number of bank failures since 1992, triple the number of 2008 private businesses filing bankruptcy, GMAC asking for BILLIONS more, rising death tolls in Mideast wars, Gitmo still open and gasoline at $3/gal.
This is great news, that the Neo cons will fight to control there 19% party, and will fight against the centrist members of there party,Let the games begin,This is going to be good,Palin,Rush,Pawlenty,Beck will all to fighting for the lunatic far right, the base as they call it,the southern base, the baggers, the gun totters, the bullet horder's,where preachers are the local political voice, and they pray for bad things to happen to people, the scared of everything bunch, scared of Colored people, scared of the government, scared of the changes in this country, just plain scared, and there representatives hammer them into believing there scare tactics. What this election does show is that the republican party is not as together as they would like for us to believe, and the Palin, Armey,Pawlenty bunch of wingers are ready to ride those Freedomworks bus all the way to,Defeat, after defeat, after defeat. But they will still have there 19 % base.
Where are the jos Barack? Do you expect him to wave a magic wand to create jobs that were slipping the last year of Bush. Its like you inheriting a job from the previous employee who did a lousy job and expecting instant results. Please its getting old. Obama was like EVERY POLITICIANS WHO HAVE PROMISED THE SKY DURING CAMPAIGNING. That's right in your mind you need immediate gratification. I vault Obama for being too timid and still trying to negotiate w/ these thugs called Republicans. Spare me the Socialism garbage. What has unregulated market capitalism done forus lately. OH! That's right we are too busy demonizing a form of government that Scandanavian countries have had for years and rank the best in quality of life.
Okay, now we're navel gazing.
 BELTWAY Fever... Post-mortems.
The REST of the country still wants lower taxes, needs a job, needs health care if they don't have it, and more security if they do, to finish Iraq and Afghanistan and hopefully keep N. Korea, Iran and whatever true wingnuts get the bomb from blowing us all up.
Could we please BURY THE BODY of 11/3 already? It's starting to stink.
This is all politics as usual. And we so love to analyze it to death.  PALIN and the Tea Baggers will keep on about this because they have nothing else to do and don't understand the rest, but you guys...
Can Barack make us hopeful; who will Palin support (and ruin) next...what does it all mean...Good grief.
It means if you've been there longer than 10 months, it's throw the bums out again. Let's try the new guy... again. (Maybe Repubs (Wilson?) who have been around for years (Bush) should watch their backs.)
In an old mess, it's better to be the NEW guy. That's all.
now the real issue has become the 20 plus million Americans still out of work....that number is much higher when you include people that have given up or had to settle for part-time work...for information on salaries being paid by companies, SalaryFor.com  offers a free and extensive database of what job seekers can expect in terms of pay. you can post your own salary or view others for free.
We are not dead but a fact has to be shared and not saying all are like this but in Congress and Politics it's showing. President Obama won fair and square, he had to get enough votes and Delegate'super's and al to go with it even almost had to have permission to be excepted and nominated before Denver. All this process to a while campaigning everywhere and I mean hard against the biggest deamon in the world race,in doing the impossible he spoke and promissed what he would do once in office and the sad thing not only the Republicans were listening but every Democrat and Demorcratic Congress person. He has laid it all out their but problems came not big just problems see nobody should have given up their delegate vote if they wanted to teach him and other black folk's a lesson we heard him and by the count and support new he could and will pull these items that he stumped about off.President Obama has the right plans and nothiong is wrong with any of them the problem is breaking down like this a lot of member are on board and have gotten pass the race issue but some have not and are lying about it.I see it myself at work a black in charge of a division new at that but has really been run by soem caucasion guy's, he smart yet evreytime he is not around these caucasion guy huddle up and snicker he might know or not so I just study them for this is business as usual yet at the Prseident's level it is worser and a shame these so called politician who oppose what ever he say's and tries to do because of cost, who just let President Bush spend rapantly are Demorcrats for we already know how Republicans are, see race used to be so hateful that people would not even share blood they would rather die.The Demorcrat who are in office that are opposing everthing from the Public option or reform with it down to any other Bill ne to recuse or just step down your type will think of No 1 only not the party or Americans and you do it because of your race not the cost of it come clean this party put a lot on the line backing President Obama to win and now you haev excuses no excuse yourself one thing is for sure about Repuiblicans it's all or nothing and if any more seats are lost it's not President Obama fault nope he will go and campaign for the party no matter who not like some of you support is support sad taking back the power to make laws and bills now you have doubts no you still have selfish pride for half of you side with Bush on to many things or didn't speak out.
middle, the point equally distant from the outer limits.  This is what the majority of the American people are looking for......middle as centered….Being of sound mind and centered….Being at neither one extreme nor the other.  Yoga should be a prerequisite for any president….yoga has many translations include "joining," "uniting," "union," "conjunction,"  Sounds good to me.
And please throw Al Gore in for a course or two and he can get in touch with the Cosmic Universal to get the scoop on Climate Change.
