GOP: Bigger isn't always better

Posted: Thursday, November 05, 2009 11:10 AM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
Minority Whip Eric Cantor has a Web video -- with big, orchestral Americana string music -- touting how much smaller the GOP-proposed House health-reform bill is than the Democrats' almost-2,000-page bill:

So is smaller better? Discuss.

*** UPDATE *** Ezra Klein at the Washington Post, the left-leaning, but highly respected reporter who's been all over health policy, writes of the GOP bill:

According to CBO, the GOP's alternative will shave $68 billion off the deficit in the next 10 years. The Democrats, CBO says, will slice $104 billion off the deficit.

The Democratic bill, in other words, covers 12 times as many people and saves $36 billion more than the Republican plan. And amazingly, the Democratic bill has already been through three committees and a merger process. It's already been shown to interest groups and advocacy organizations and industry stakeholders. It's already made its compromises with reality. It's already been through the legislative sausage grinder. And yet it saves more money and covers more people than the blank-slate alternative proposed by John Boehner and the House Republicans. The Democrats, constrained by reality, produced a far better plan than Boehner, who was constrained solely by his political imagination and legislative skill.

WHO CARES ??

The Train has already LEFT THE STATION

The House will be voting on the Democratic plan this Saturday
THAT'S What you'll be voting on Cantor

It SUCKS to be a Republican !!
No Input
No Voice
No Sense
No Feeling

Gee, Eric !!
Maybe you can show your bill to the Tea Baggers
Burn a few crosses while you're at it

It SUCK to BE a Republican !!

LOL
There isn't a woman on this board that would agree with that comment,Domenico

I'm just saying,...

Shhhhhhh...don't annoy the GOP with those silly details!
HA  HA  HA

Again "agent orange" John Boehner is selling a solution that solves nothing for the majority and only addresses the conservative pet peeves.
How inappropriate can we get with this one, Domenico?  or is it a 'loaded' question?  tee hee

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Sorry, I am just so tickled by the rightwing excuse for leadership, I can't even act mature on this one.
This speaks for itself.  The Republicans only concerned with themselves.  What happened to all their concern for the American people and country first. It just seems as if they are not at all serious about the health care issue - this was only something, anything, to counteract the Democratic bill.
Sing it Ezra!

Republican "Leadership" is out of touch and off the grid.

Obviously!  (just for you, Richard -Washington State!  PS.  Saw that movie 8 months after my dog of 12 years died.  I sobbed like a baby, in the theater with my kids.)
Can't wait to see how the right wingers on here attempt to defend this. Covers less people and doesn't save as much money PER THE CBO! In other words, the Republican bill wouldn't cover the number of people uninsured in the state of Texas! Now, I know you'll attack the reporter but remember THE CBO SAID IT! You know the guys all the Republicans have made sure Democrats bills went to first so they could site the cost and attempt to obstruct progress!
Buzz

In 1980 congress made all of us part of the corporate profit and Wall Street game when the 401k became law. Now WE have a vested interest in corporations being as profitable as possible. (Should have stuck with profit sharing)

In the early 80’s congress made it advantageous for companies to build plants outside the US and out source jobs, increasing their profitability.

So as share holders we push companies for greater profits to improve our 401k.
To accomplish our demands they out source more jobs for a better bottom line.
Then we reward the executives with large salaries, wonderful benefits and huge bonuses for doing away with our jobs.

It’s the American way
AL Gore is a COMPLETE IDIOT !!
I;'m GLAD he lost the Presidency !
ANYBODY BUT GORE !!
Even Bush

From HuffPost:

'...Al Gore Defends Joe Lieberman: "Right And Forceful On Many Of The Issues" (VIDEO)

Al Gore sat down for an interview with MSNBC's Rachel Maddow, and the first segments aired on her eponymous show last night. One interesting exchange was about whether Gore, a progressive icon, had had any changes of heart regarding his friend Joe Lieberman, who is loathed by progressives.

Maddow noted that his former running mate has changed his politics pretty significantly since the race in 2000 - "He's an independent now. He is now personally threatening to be the guy who kills health care reform." In hindsight, does Gore regret choosing Lieberman as his running mate and in the process dramatically raising his political profile?

Gore: The short answer is no. We were very close friends in the Senate. We're still friends. He was right and forceful on many of the issues I felt were central, including global warming. He's been of the leaders on that issue. On women's right. On a whole range of issues. I disagree with him on a lot of the issues that have become more prominent since then, but I would urge people to wait until the denouement of this health care debate to see where it falls out because I do believe that Harry Reid is going to be successful in passing it very soon.

Gore is also confident that despite the odds the Senate will pass climate and energy legislation before the world-wide climate change meeting in Copenhagen.

What a douche !!

Michelle Bachmann presents: 'Crapapalooza' !!

Learn to Goose Step !!
Have heard almost zero discussion of the GOP plan probably because there isn't much to mention.  What, Eric, your party spent 9 months preparing an "outline" of legislation.  Cantor didn't give any details of WHAT is in the bill, just the usual GOP talking points memo 101.  The bits I've heard is that the GOP version is status quo, gives more to insurance companies, and does not prevent insurance companies from discriminating against those with pre-existing conditions, and it actually costs taxpayers more.  Good old Eric, mentioning spending money we don't have.  Well, you, Eric and your GOP buddies added over $5 trillion to the national debt by spending money you didn't have on things like a war we didn't need, tax cuts for the richest 10% that we didn't need, rebate checks, an Rx medicare bill that jeopardized the medicare trust fund.  Fiscal conservatives spinning in the wind.
Ezra Klein at the Washington Post, the left-leaning, but highly respected reporter who's been all over health policy, writes of the GOP bill:

Will you now post something by a "right-leaning,but highly respected reporter who's been all over health policy that refutes or provides a counterpoint to Klein?

"news.yahoo.com: WASHINGTON The health care bill headed for a vote in the House this week costs $1.2 trillion or more over a decade, according to numerous Democratic officials and figures contained in an analysis by congressional budget experts, far higher than the $900 billion cited by President Barack Obama as a price tag for his reform plan.

While the Congressional Budget Office has put the cost of expanding coverage in the legislation at roughly $1 trillion, Democrats added billions more on higher spending for public health, a reinsurance program to hold down retiree health costs, payments for preventive services and more."
I'll give the dopes of nope credit when it's due... at least they included some #'s this time as opposed to their so-called budget!

Looks like the righties had to actually DO SOMETHING for a refreshing change!

Too bad their numbers STINK!

Let the rants from the right begin in 3...2...1... on how the CBO isn't a credible agency (well it is only when it meats their needs) lol lol lol

Hey Feistey is MSNBC a good enough source for you

A spokesman for the U.S. jail facility a day earlier said guards and then inmates were scheduled for inoculations. Critics were fast to object, saying U.S. civilians were waiting for vaccines while suspected terrorists were being given injections
_______________

I stand corrected!  But will also take the opportunity to point out the word 'suspected' terrorists!

They have NOT been convicted!

Also look up the word 'voluntary' while you're at it!

Don't let the English language stand in the way of a good rant though...
PS.  Is there anything "Better than Ezra"?  tee hee, couldn't help myself.
Ezra says it all . . . especially the last sentence!
Conservatism is always better.

Just look at the state of our country with the Democratic/Socialistic policies and practices of Obie, who has absolutely no idea what he's doing.
He has a VP buffoon and rads all around him.

And my fave bumper sticker.

Obama .. bred by the devil. Elected by fools.

"Ouch", that's gotta hurt. Ezra ripped em a new one. Too bad these rethugliklan morons are divorced from anything even resembling "reality".
the GOP has no solutions except tax cuts and tax rebates for the top 1% - sorry but been there done that for 40 years and "W" really nuked the planet with demented 8 years of final trickle down for the billionaires...if you are sick and need health care, or just plain need health care and can't afford it - don't ask for the GOP to help cause they are lined with money from insurance companies making money off you dying ...oh and of course it is OK to spend 2 trillion in Iraq, and 2 trillion to save the banks, and 2 trillion in tax cuts for the top 1%, but dare spend 1 trillion to save american lives (oh and it is paid for, something "W" never did) - nope GOP can't do that.
Great analysis, Mr. Klein. The right wingers will tear you to pieces and call you self serving, but they reject the truth every single time.

The Repub HC plan is not a plan if it leaves out so many people. But I have to give Boehner and his bunch credit for coming up with something on paper. Most of the time they are talking loud and saying absolutely nothing.

BTW, Robby McDonell, where are the jobs you promised? You've had almost 48 hours already!
Why doesn't this fact get more coverage in the mainstream media?  It is because media journalists would rather focus on strategy and who's winning than on what party has the best policy.  Do your job, and get this on the network!
I'm with Clara: Can hardly resist myself. What "bigger" is he talking about? I'll be nice and say that Cantor must be talking about the size of the Republican Party...which is getting smaller with each passing day.

See couldn't defend your boys, so you come out attacking without one bit of proof. All opinion! Serious question. What has changed so much that we now have "socialist" policies? PLEASE NAME ONE POLICY! JUST ONE! Sorry your a "ditto" head. Spouting out whatever your told without a grasp of the facts!
this is typical of the gop, they finally present a bill and the house is voting in 48 hours.where the hell have they been?sounds like a re-run of their alternate budget.i'd be curious what the cbo has to say...
I suspected he liked smaller better.

Couldn't help myself.
Finally some has the balls to call the republiklans wout for what they are.A bunch of me firsters, who don;t have a clue what the people of this country want, and for all that matters, they don't give a damn, they are the party of WE first,Bohner is a mouth piece,he holds up blank sheets of paper, and claims this is there plan,BS they don;t have a plan, they would prefer that people would die before they would consider lifting a finger to move this HCR bill forword.RNC/GOP there version of Death Panels.
Dear GOP:

Since you claim to realize that bigger is not always better, why do you pretend the same is not true in Afghanistan?

Why is war the only endeavor the GOP is willing to fund forever no matter how we pay for it?
I'm with Clara: Can hardly resist myself. What "bigger" is he talking about? I'll be nice and say that Cantor must be talking about the size of the Republican Party...which is getting smaller with each passing day.

The President Should Be Opposing the House Bill

"...Overall, then, the House plan, including the SGR fix, is to spend about $1.5 trillion over the period 2010 to 2019 on health care, well in excess of the $900 billion budget the president promised to the American people."

Reasonable people on both sides can have questions...
Pete, Albany.  Perfect answer, shhhh....  LOL
Health Care Reform or Special Interests pacafication?  For eight years the Republican Party strongly and stubbornly supported everything the Bush Administration did as it totally placated and patronized Special Interests and a select few, done with an in-your-face arrogance.  Together they irresponsibly and unconscionably encouraged the dishonesty, self-indulgence and neglect that literally contributed to bringing down most systems in this country.  The Bush Presidency unapologetically passed a gargantuan mess on to the Obama Presidency and the Republican Party then just attempted to block/obstruct, without any regard for other than their own interests, all efforts to solve problems.  Without ever contributing anything positive or constructive they now aggressively criticize the Obama Administration for not totally turning things around in just ten months.  Today everyone should be able to recognize the lies, the scare tactics and the appeals to prejudices and emotions, all intended to mislead and manipulate the majority and benefit only the few.  Anyone who accepts all of that, who supports the Republicans’ efforts with the substantial overt and covert activity of their patrons, aimed to return to ‘more of the same’, obviously has to be certifiably crazy.  Anyone who is willing to ignore the consequences, at the very least, has to be masochistic.

I find it interesting that you couldn't put a name out there for us to 'chew' on.  Of course it makes me think perhaps there just isn't a "right-leaning,but highly respected reporter who's been all over health policy..."

Can you name one?
Bing Censored? (Sent Thursday, November 05, 2009 12:20 PM)

Seriously, you are putting an article out there that you found on a health insurer's website as an example of unbiased 'journalism'?  Do you live in Breckenridge?  Because you are obviously smoking something.  When you finish off that bag of Doritos, do you want to have a serious discussion?
"According to CBO, the GOP's alternative will shave $68 billion off the deficit in the next 10 years. The Democrats, CBO says, will slice $104 billion off the deficit.

WOW, talk about being fiscal responsible, the republican don't know what that is!!!
There is one small item this article fails to mention, the cost.  The cost of the GOP bill is estimated by the CBO at only 61 Billion over the next 10 years.

Since the bill costs 61 billion and drops the deficit by 68 billion I would consider this cost effective since the cost of the bill is 1/17th of the Dem version.
Though the Dem plan covers 12 times the people it is 17.64 times the cost.
FYI: there won't be a bill passed this close to midterms. The dems are running scared.

So, this post was about the CBO comparison of the GOP and Dem plans. you yell about the source, and then go on to bash the Dems plan, giving absolutely no mention to the peice of crap plan offered by your side. lower start up costs, granted. But less deficit decreses, and fewer services offered, fewer people covered, and people still left out to dry because they had acne (pre- existing conditions)

So what I'd like you to do, is tell us how you feel about your side's plan. why is it better that the plans being discussed? What are the benifits? And how does this plan help getting more people in America affordable health care?

I really hope you have the fortitude to answer, and defend this peice of $hit plan.

Thank you,

Is Ezra Klein an "unbiased" journalist? Most everyone who writes a blog does so from a point of view. by your lights we would have to discount EVERYONE. In that spirit I have provided links to the actual bills in another post so that those who actually care can read and form opinions without the filter provided by opinion media.
Argument trolls spew invective and are common here. Those willing to engage in intelligent, informed discourse are rare. Thank you for making it obvious to all exactly where you fall in that spectrum...I am sure that you are sincere in your beliefs, but I find your expression of opinion detrimental to the spirit of rational debate.
