IL SEN: Courting Sarah

Posted: Thursday, November 05, 2009 12:22 PM by Domenico Montanaro
Filed Under: ,

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
Patrick Hughes, a conservative running for Obama's U.S. Senate seat next year, is out with a statement after the news came out of his primary opponent Mark Kirk's appeal to Sarah Palin for her endorsement.

"I believe Mark Kirk, who has consistently supported President Obama's legislative agenda, including cap and trade legislation, is quickly realizing that Republican Primary voters do not share his extreme views," Hughes said in a statement released by his campaign. "In a desperate attempt to prove otherwise, he is seeking the endorsement of Sarah Palin, a true Reagan conservative, to help disguise his liberal voting record."

Hughes, an attorney and Chicago-area developer, is also the chairman of the recently created PAC Sensible Taxpayers Opposed to Increased Taxes, or STOP-IT. It was created, according to the STOP-IT Web site, "in the aftermath of Taxpayer 'Tea Party' protests ... to oppose Governor Patrick Quinn’s proposals to increase corporate and individual tax rates by 50%."

Hughes released a poll last month showing himself down 24%-11% to Kirk in a primary, but with far fewer knowing him than Kirk. His campaign hopes that will give Hughes an opening if he can become better known.

Of course, one important way to improve name ID is to raise -- and spend -- lots of money. And the Tea Partiers certainly can raise some cash (see: Wilson, Joe). An endorsement from Palin can only help with money and would attach national recognition to a largely unknown.

The fight over Sarah has begun. Expect to see more of these kinds of pleas in hot GOP primaries in the coming months.

*** UPDATE *** The Hughes campaign tells First Read they have lobbied Palin and other conservative PACs to get behind them.

"We have been in contact with Sarah PAC and many other conservative PACs," said Laura Grock, spokeswoman for Hughes. None has offered help YET, "but would graciously accept the support of a true Reagan Conservative like Sarah Palin," Grock said.

It sounds like there's trouble in bigotland.
Bring Sarah on!! As we saw in NY23, she continues to help the democrats!! LOL!!

Seriously, you are putting an article out there that you found on a health insurer's website as an example of unbiased 'journalism'?  Do you live in Breckenridge?  Because you are obviously smoking something.  When you finish off that bag of Doritos, do you want to have a serious discussion?

Carly may be intelligent; but she doesn't know crap about politics.  She was one of the weakest links in McCain's 'armor' (using the term SO lightly).  She has an ability to talk over other people but there is no way in hell she can syphon this from Barbara Boxer.  PS.  I realize she thinks she's a lock in the Republican Primary, so she has decided to spend the time going toe to toe with Barbara; but as Dede Scozzafava can tell you, don't count your chickens before they are hatched.  I believe Carly took a step away from conservatism - as we know it today, by acknowledging a truth.  No way she pulls this off,...

I like your point.  And to make another fly by observation, why is it a %?  The administration for 1.00 is not different than 10,000.00.  If the Banks were culpable for validating transactions at the exchange of services, they wouldn’t need to hedge the ‘risk’ with exhorbitant percentage fees.  I say this because a Debit Card number of mine was stolen and used to purchase Mall gift cards in New York to the tune of several thousand dollars.  The Mall didn’t act responsibly, the Visa folks didn’t act responsibly and it took me over a month to get the CASH put back in my bank account.  The risk of fraud shouldn’t always start and end with the consumer.  Somewhere along the way, corporations need to behave responsibly.  Who in their right mind would sell Mall gift cards without having the card and a valid ID?  Why would the bank authorize a transaction of such a high dollar without the card being swiped?  Stepping off my soap box now.  This was two years ago; but a pain the tush just the same.
Smart move on Hughes' part.  Any candidate that distances themselves from Obie's extreme views can only improve their chances.

Domenico... I see a pattern here today :0)

Oh, that's rich.  This could prove to be another example of how not to run a campaign, run from the moderate to the far right and hope moderates and blue state liberals forget at election time.  Morning Joe and Mika were stuck on "real, honest" this morning when it came to democrats--how real and honest is it for the republican to try covering up his liberal record by courting Palin.  Politicians seem to forget that most voters are smart enough to see through the smoke and mirrors.  Ask McCain, Guilliani, Romney how well it worked to move far right, change positions on views and think no one will notice.
IT PAYS TO HAVE SARAH

But Palin won't work for you unless you're are the real deal, a true conservative. Her appeal is massive and her supporters are true, unlike the Obie "supporters" that left him when he didn't fulfill his promises to them.

More wildebeests that he led over the cliff.

And where are the jobs, Obie?
The White House isn't very good at arithmetic.
People lose their jobs but your numbers never fall.
And what about those who have had their 40 hours cut in half just so they can keep their jobs? Do you count those jobs as "half" lost?

Most people don't know that Kirk went to China, one of the United States' largest creditor nations, and told the Communist party bosses there not to trust US budget numbers, undermining the United States out of spite because Barack Obama had been elected president.

Kirk is on the far right. He only looks like an "extreme" liberal to someone like this Hughes clown, who is obviously a member of the Far-Out Right.

In keep with the rythem there isn't a member of the stale male & pale party who WOULDN'T like to 'court' Bible Spice!  lol lol lol

And just what is a "rythem" anyway?????  Not to mention the grammatical error of "In keep with."
Feisty, don't let the English language get in the way of your rants.  And quit criticizing others for the exact same thing you do!!
The lefties here keep saying that Palin is not a threat, yet they have a meltdown at the mere mention of her name.  They are the very ones keeping her name in the news.  Just ignore her, if she's not a threat.  Yet they insist on attacking - the Chicago-thug, Obie way.
And another thing about Caribou Barbie….

She sure does a lot of ‘talking’ from her social networking sites, however when was the LAST time anyone’s heard her ACTUALLY speak? lol lol lol

Not that I'm asking for it or anything... just wondering?

Oh… the things that make you go Hmmmm!

Here ya go Clara…extra butter for you just the way you like it!
Have you done your time in the Obama Government Swine Line?

Have you done your time in the Obama Government Swine Line?

It appears someone is talking to themself again today.

If the election was held today, do you think Obama would win?

Vote out ALL incumbents. They're the one's who screwed the country and are continuing to do so. No one needs to be a career politician. No one.

How many will die today as Obama continues to weigh the political consequences with whatever he decides to do. This is a scared man, really scared at this point. People will die today due to his indecisiveness and selfishness towards his political life. Shameful.

Obama is like the paint sample you saw at the hardware store, liked it, bought the paint, but when you got home and used it, you found it really wasn't the shade you thought it was.

Why do the democrats result to crude language and name calling? Small vocabulary or small brain?

If I was a Democrat, I guess I'd be pretty angry all the time also. Promise after promise after promise. No results.
Where were all these "sensible taxpayers" when Congress was busily ramping up two wars?

I guess that, as between guns and butter, only guns make sense.  Except when THEY need the butter.
Sarah Palin is a true Reagan conservative?  Really, I thought that Reagan actually though about policy and thought about it before senility set in.  I would never fight over Sarah Palin or most ideologues.  It seems silly to have someone who can't answer a question of where she gets her news from.

------------------------------------------------

Sarah Palin is a "true Reagan conservative"?

Let me ask:

- Would Ronald Reagan support quitting your job halfway through your first term?

- Would Ronald Reagan endorse bankrolling an ill-prepared candidate who doesn't live in the Congressional District he is running to represent?

- Would Ronald Reagan, if he were running for office right now, be labeled "Not Conservative Enough" by the Palin-Beck-Limbaugh troika?

It was created, according to the STOP-IT Web site, "in the aftermath of Taxpayer 'Tea Party' protests ... to oppose Governor Patrick Quinn’s proposals to increase corporate and individual tax rates by 50%."

Governer Quinn had to propose that because our former jail bird governer ryan and Blago, have our state 12 billion in the hole. state agencys had to lay-off workers because they could not pay them. as a illinos tax payer, i have no problem to raise the state income tax rate, governer Quinn wanted to raise it temporarly to get out state right.
Mark Kirk had trouble winning his congressional seat last election. Good luck Mark, if you have sarah you will need it.
yea, we see what Palin's endorsement did for Hoffman in New York, so funny.

At a time when the book industry is struggling to maintain, much less increase, sales, publishers and authors say an appearance on Glenn Beck’s television or radio programs helps attract new readers. After James Rollins, the author of “The Doomsday Key,” a thriller about a group of Defense Department scientists trying to solve an ancient mystery, appeared this past summer on Mr. Beck’s radio program and then his television show — on which Mr. Beck promised viewers “it will keep you on the edge of your seat — Mr. Rollins met several people at a book signing who told him they had bought the book based on that recommendation, he said.

First Palin has a best seller that hasn't even been released and now this. Glenn Beck has become the new Oprah for authors!

Very interesting. I bet these things kick the slander mouths into high gear. Ridicule, anger, hate.

As long as Poochie Gang brought jobs up AGAIN, From another post:

I'm sure some clown will post something like "hey, Obie- where's the jobs" or something simillar.
Just last week, Electrolux decided to cut 800 to 1000 Iowans out of jobs by sending the jobs to Mexico.  This goes on all the time, and has for a long time now.  Guess it's cheaper to produce the product down there (or in China).  Will all the savings in labor costs go toward lower prices for the product?  Fat chance.  Will the saving go to into the accounts of the stockholders and 'higer-ups' in the company?  Count on it.
So- short of "Obie" outlawing comapnies from outsourcing jobs, what is YOUR answer to lowering unemployment these days??  Don't say "less taxes on the captains of industry", either.  We saw how that has worked the last several years.
And remember- if "Obie" did try to outlaw this practice, the shouts of "commie dictator" would be deafening.

Wow, one guy talks to Palin about maybe getting an endorsement, and it's HUGE news. This goes on every single day in Washington and in politics from people asking Al Gore, to Bill Clinton, to John McCain, for their endorsements, and no one even notices. But Palin's name comes up, it's NY Times headlines!
The geezer (Sent Thursday, November 05, 2009 12:20 PM) While that is 'theoretically' true, it isn't actually true.  The first recipient of Medicare lived until she was about 94 and withdrew 2,000 times what she had paid in.  It is socialized by those of us paying premiums now.  I'll find you a link when I get a minute; but do continue with your simplistic view of the world.

That's right Mr. Kirk, you go get Sarah's endorsement. Oh and polish up your resume too. It seems that some views are just too extreme for most voters and that would be Ms. Palin's among others. So you go right ahead and get her blessing and then watch the office slip away in the primary election unless the far right bullies any moderate opponent and then you can plan on losing the general election by even more.
Oh joy! Sarah Palin is stopping here on her book tour! Teabaggers are in their glory! Unfortunately there is a shortage of stuffed monkeys and nooses due to high demand!

Keep the endorsements up Sarah! If worse comes to worse, at least it will be a moderate Repub that wins if not the Democrat!

And this is the best you can come up with?
What FR fails to mention is that neither Hughes nor Kirk is a really viable candidate among those who are officially or unofficially running for either the Senate or Governor seats in Illinois.  While I truly believe that it is imperative that the Republicans run strong candidates for these important offices (and I say this as a moderate independent), Palin can endorse whomever she chooses and it will have nothing but a negative outcome for the General Election.  I suspect that Illinois will be reflective of other states come 2010.  Illinois is hungry for strong, bipartisan leadership, as we have paid mightly for the election of an imbecile Governor (take your pick) and lack of leadership in the Illinois Senate.  If Palin were at all congnizant of Illinois issues, she would gracefully bow out of any involvement - but, that probably isn't on her agenda.  You think???
lets see....no democrat has won the ny 23 district in 23 years....sarah opens her stupid mouth....democrat wins.....they are fighting over her why ???
NY 23 didn't seem much of an endorsement for Sarah Palin. Only someone on the extreme right might find her a positive backer. A moderate should run from her...although a moderate would not meet her requirements.
Well Patrick Hughes, the first thing you have to do is to Apply for your FaceBook Account.  Then, you can dictate to your voters from there.  No one will ever be able to tell if you are using a Teleprompter or not, so it does have its upside.
