Steele to target moderates?

From NBC's Mark Murray
In an interview today with ABC, Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele appeared to fire off this warning shot to Republican moderates who supported the economic stimulus (like Florida Gov. Charlie Crist and Maine Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins) or who might support health-care reform (like Snowe):

"We'll come after you."

Crist, of course, is competing in a Senate primary against the conservative Marco Rubio.

Here's the passage:

Asked if he'd be comfortable with Republican candidates in 2010 who supported President Obama's stimulus package, or his push to overhaul health care, Steele said: "Well I'm gonna tell you honestly, that's where the line gets a little bit tricky. And you saw in the House and in the Senate that there are ramifications, because that goes against a core principle. And trust me, you're assuming that people want to have bloated debt, government expenditures and growth into their lives -- they don't. That's a talking point out of the DNC."

"People aren't buying that. So candidates who live in moderate to slightly liberal districts have got to walk a little bit carefully here, because you do not want to put yourself in a position where you're crossing that line on conservative principles, fiscal principles, because we'll come after you."

An RNC spokesman tells First Read that Steele was referring only to House members, and not a single House Republican voted for the stimulus, and not a single one is expected to back health reform. "This is not about moderates," the spokeswoman said. "It is about liberals who support the president's radical, big-government agenda."

Earlier this year, Steele suggested in a FOX interview that the three Senate Republicans who voted for the stimulus -- Snowe, Collins, and Arlen Specter (who later switched parties) -- might face primary challenges and might not receive funds from the RNC.

*** UPDATE *** DNC spokesman Hari Sevugan emails First Read: "With today's threat to 'come after' moderate Republicans or those that would work for bipartisan solutions, it's clear the Michael Steele and the Republican party are ready to hand over the keys of the GOP to Michele Bachmann, Glenn Beck and the rest of the extremist tea party crowd. And in establishing a policy of purging moderates, the Republicans have committed themselves to being an extreme ideological party that will only turn-off independent voters and further marginalize an already isolated party going into 2010 and beyond."

It's the republican definition of bi-partisanship

all you saying that our president is dividing the country can take a seat now, we found the real culprit.
I can hardly believe what I am witnessing in this country today. None of us here can. Can they possibly go any lower? What losers.
Pat, Boston, MA (Sent Thursday, November 05, 2009 2:14 PM)

I feel the same, Pat!! I cannot believe the hatred, the vitriol and the racism I am witnessing!! If not for my own eyes, I wouldn't believe that in 2009, people actually are capable of such beliefs!!

I do believe, though, that there are millions more of "us" than "them" and that we will prevail!! I am more appalled by the day, and to see an elected official acting in this manner is beyond disgraceful!!
Man, talk about delusional.  I don't think Steele really wants:  "The south to do it again" but that's all the GOP's are looking at for support.  The rest of the country is progressing forward.
Having Bible Spice lurking around here for any longer than needed will definetly drive down tourism!  lol lol

That, too, Feisty!! Seriously, I does hope she stays away!! Your state deserves better!!
We'll come after you."

Translated into Steelyman speak as 'We're gonna git you suckers!

He's one cool 'cat' dontcha know?

You betcha... baby!
"We'll come after you."

Says the RNC to Michael Steele. Very soon.

Mr. Steele has to know that the Republican party is only using him as a counterfeit Barack Obama and as soon as his usefulness is over, so shall be his Chairmanship.

There is little room in your party, Mr. Steele, for anybody who is different or can think independently. Soon the Taliban party will be intolerant of anybody and berkas will be required for all women.
Now the Republicans are targeting their own kind. This is getting even better than before. So much for the all-inclusive Republican Party. Keep it up and all sane-minded people will see you for what you really are. Steele must have got his orders from Limbaugh!

American's are coming after Obama and his devisive actions and indecisiveness, and they are coming with their votes to sweep the trash out of the house also.

The liberal lunacy that has taken over in Washington in the form of a spending frenzy and goverment takeover are not, repeat NOT being well received by the average American.

Obama lied and has proven to be a one trick pony, one who can give teleprompter speeches but not deliver results.

In a time when a true leader is needed, we have the ultimate YES MAN working for his Chicago bosses who pull his strings. It's really pathetic.

Erase the mistake of Biden/Obama 08! The ball is rolling and the real end begins in 2010!
This after he just said on Hardball last night that the Republican Party has a big tent.  What a liar.  No surprise, of course.

I welcome this 'open' platform.  We all see how well it worked for them in NY-23.  Cannibalism is 'alive' and well in the Republican Party.  Moderates Need Not Apply.

I am humming to the tune of "Long Haired Freaky People Need Not Apply" - what is that song, "Signs"?
"We'll come after you."
__________

The tolerance displayed by these morons is simply astounding!  *snark*

Dem's will be thanking Palin for years to come!

From another post:

In New Jersey, 90% said they are worried, and Christie leads with these folks by three points, 48%-45%.
-------------------------------------------------------
Christie only led by 3% on that? I would figure that to be a much greater spread if people were really blaming Dem's and/or the president for the economy. As for Virginia, Deeds was just a weak candidate so HE failed to get the voters fired up and ready to go, not Obama. In fact, Deeds seemed to distance himself from the president (even saying he might opt-out of the public option.) Big mistake since most want a public option! I think the white house should be pleased with the exit poll info. As we know by his primary loss in NH and his great speech after the Rev.Wright fiasco, Barack Obama turns defeat and challenge into opportunity. My guess is if voters just start to see the slight makings of a recovery, the Dem's will be fine in 2010. Maybe 1-2 dozen overall seat losses (as is historically expected) but nothing horrible, especially if the GOP continue to have Palin and Beck as the face of the party and still have no new ideas.
Really, Mr. Steele?  Here's what you said last week (Oct. 28) about Dede Scozzafava...

"I support the Republican nominee as the Republican Party chairman, and that’s the way it should go, right?"

What'd that get you?

Apparently, it got you neutered by the far-right frince of your own party!
Michael Steale is a COMPLETE IDIOT !!

Complete Idiots are very rare
He's a National Treasure (for Democrats)

Michael, you've just given permission to the Democrats to IGNORE ANY Republican input on HCR

HCR will pass without the Republicans

HCR MUST START in 2010
Obama has to GET OFF HIS FANNY and start pressuring the Blue Dogs !!

WHAT IS HE WAITING FOR ??

Bachman's little psychodrama:
the 'Fish Bowl of Morons' !

CRAPAPALOOZZA for LOSERS !!!!

Is Michael Steale 'Re BRANDING' the Republican Party ?

They're being Re-Branded as LSOERS ???
Good job MSNBC. Report the few signs with the most vitriol. Ignore the majority of signs from concerned Americans. Anything to fit your narrative, huh?

Look, DG- you know damned well the press will report on the house that burnded down in the neighborhood today instead of the houses that didn't.
The A** Ho*le signs and the people holding them were there during what was suupposed to be civilized 'public discourse'.  (the organizers DID sellit as 'civilized', I hope.....)  The outlet(s) doing the coverage are not the bad guys here.

Having said that- there is a bright side to this event and all this negativity present in it's midst:
The percent (20%) of people that own up to being Republicans just got a lot smaller, I'm guessing.
Talk about no brains.
Mr. Steele, you go man, go. We would like nothing more than for you to push for more ubercons. This will ensure Democratic victories for decades to come. Thank you for the gift that keeps on giving.

I wonder what they will call the party that replaces the Republican party as the second party?
In other words, Steele and RNC think the moderate republican voters have no right to be moderate and the GOP does not care about moderate republicans--that thinking is what cost them a moderate NY23 district.  Keep moving to the right GOP, those independents who voted in VA and NJ won't be following for long.  Let's see, the RNC has already walked this back, give Steele a couple hours and he'll say it was taken out of context, he misspoke or was misunderstood.

Greg P, NW IN.  Good point about their version of bi-partisanship.  I caught GOP analyst Ron Christie the other day claiming that Pres Obama had created the worst political divide he's seen in DC--probably one of the dumbest remarks ever and straight out of the GOP playbook--blame the other side.  More tortured logic from the right which no longer connects obvious dots.

Ignorant, just plain ignorant.  Where are your solutions, other than voting President Obama out of the White House?  That's all people of your ilk care about.  While ignoring the fact that you have been brainwashed for decades to vote against your own self interests, to be persuaded that there is no end of the corporate greed and that somehow that benefits you; to believe that your party is more important than your country; to believe that never to say anything constructive, but to only spew your hate and ignorance is the new "American" way of life.   It is only the "other" party that spends according to you; it is only the "other" people who are unpatriotic and should be denied their freedoms and rights (especially the right to vote in this President)?   I really pity you and most of the Republican bloggers on this site.  Sad thing is, you won't even understand these comments.  You are such a sad lot.

See here we go,
once again i hate to bring up the past.

Obama lied and has proven to be a one trick pony, one who can give teleprompter speeches but not deliver results.
ok i have to remind you that Bush started a war based upon lies that cost us 4000 of our young men and women, how soon do you nuckle headed republican for get. you keep talking about lies, not one american soldier has lost his life because of a lie president Obama has told.

In a time when a true leader is needed, we have the ultimate YES MAN working for his Chicago bosses who pull his strings. It's really pathetic.
what about George bush and DICK chenny make then leaders, this is the president who had home land  Security chief lie and raise the level get everybody scared, to help him get re-elected. oha yes thats leadership.

The liberal lunacy that has taken over in Washington in the form of a spending frenzy and goverment takeover are not, repeat NOT being well received by the average American.
major initiatives under Bush -- tax cuts, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and a Medicare prescription drug bill -- are projected to add $6 trillion to the nation's deficits." talk about frenzy spending, he left office with deficets after clinton left him with a budget surplus.

Erase the mistake of Biden/Obama 08!
the mistake was to belive former president bush when he told us that going in to iraq would make us safe.

you a very uneducated person that i feel sorry for, you are fulled with hatred and i just hope one day that you realise that the greatest day in america was the day we got george bush out of office and put a man in that will not run away from america problem in stead of causing them.
Can the repubs do anymore damage to themselves.  I just love watching them devour themselves.  SOme of the stuff that comes out of their mouths - you just can't make up.  They are their own comedy club.  If they keep it up, there won't be an election, the dems won't have anyone to run against.  They will have purged themselves out of Washington.
I do not know why - given the fact that Michael Steele is a buffoon - but I am truly stunned at them eating their own.  You do not want moderates?  Even with all their loudmouths, rude and insulting rhetoric, there is only about 20 million of them - this does not make a winning coaliton.  From my understanding most moderates in America are very turned off by this - did they not learn anything with all that screaming and shouting at the town hall meetings on health care - played right into the President's hands.  Wow.
Target? With what? PALIN's Moose Gun?
