House Dems expect vote tomorrow

Posted: Friday, November 06, 2009 2:54 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
Democratic House leadership contends there will, in fact, be a vote tomorrow on health-reform legislation -- despite reports suggesting a vote could be pushed back to Sunday or even next week.

An aide told First Read that "assuming all goes well," they are aiming for a vote late afternoon/early evening tomorrow. The aide, however, conceded the vote could slip later into tomorrow evening.

"We still expect to vote on health care tomorrow," the aide said.

The only thing that could push it off -- aside from not having the votes, and Dems don't have those yet -- are procedural delays by Republicans.

But Republican leadership says that's not part of the plan.

A GOP aide said they are happy to watch Democrats "flopping around like landed haddock." (For those wondering, haddock is a deep water cod.)

"Any member has the right to make a motion to adjourn and walk off the floor," the aide said. But "in terms of strategy, no. We're not going to let Steny's waggin' finger blame us for this."

The reference to Steny, is Steny Hoyer, the Democratic majority leader. Republicans also said they are hearing Hoyer is OK with the vote being pushed back to Sunday or next week if they don't have the votes tomorrow.

Not so, Hoyer's office says. But as far as getting to 218, a Democratic aide said, "All indications we've gotten is that we're getting there."

Translation: They don't have the votes yet.

The Rules Committee began meeting at 2:00 pm ET today to figure out what the structure for tomorrow will be.

At 9:00 am ET tomorrow, members will vote on the rules, then debate the Democratic bill, and then debate the Republican alternative. Word is, the GOP bill could get just an hour, and then Democrats will move on.

Another possible complication: the American Medical Association's Interim Meeting of the AMA House of Delegates will take place in Houston, beginning tomorrow and continuing through Tuesday. Republicans are hoping state AMA groups will pressure the national organization to rescind its endorsement. Republicans think that is a real possibility.

"The national leadership is out of touch" with doctors across the country, the GOP aide said.

So why is Congress coming in on Saturday to debate the measure anyway? Why not just do it on Monday?

Well, there's the complication that going home and hearing complaints from some of the loudest constituents could spook members, particularly those who are undecided about how they'll vote. Complicating matter even further is that Veterans Day is Wednesday. And members traditionally go home that day for parades in their districts.

So, if uncertainty were to creep in over a weekend at home. And then members have to be wrangled again on Monday and Tuesday, that could slow the vote down to the end of the week or possibly even the following week.

Hence, why Democrats are trying to push this through as quickly as they can.

Did you even read the articles you posted? The first two are from the AP, not MSNBC, and it was his economic team not President Obama's quote. You keep saying the President said, all I ask is for you to give us his quote, not some news organization.

Thank you, Speaker Pelosi!! I am confident this Bill will pass, and that this country will finally spend our tax money to help its citizens, as opposed to the last administration, who spent it sending our men and women to fight a war that didn't need fighting, and at such a great expense, foremost, the loss of human lives!! Shame on the GOP!!
We need to find out more about the Fort Hood killer.

Will NBC, CBS, ABC and CNN ovoid the obvious or actually ask real pertinent questions about this man, his name, background and why he did this awful thing.

Yeah, they should keep it to less than 10 pages for the idiots to can't understand complex legalese.

We should all dumb down to accommodate the GOP.

Think Progress:

Under the Republican health care alternative filed in the House, young and healthy individuals can purchase policies from insurers that don’t abide by local benefit or rate standards. The Republican bill allows the health insurer to choose a “primary state” “whose covered laws shall govern the health insurance issuer” and sell policies to people in other states without adhering “to all of the consumer protection laws or restrictions on rate changes of the state.”

Over at MYDD, Bruce Webb calls the provision, “Sweatshop Insurance.” This bill goes far beyond merely “stripping states of power over insurance rates and conditions,” he notes. It “explicitly expands the definition of ‘State’ to include not just D.C. and Puerto Rico, which makes some sense in context, but adds BY NAME the Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa and Jack Abramoff’s favorite client-the Northern Marianas home of the ‘Made in the USA’ Chinese-owned close to slave labor sweatshops.”

I think it's pretty stark how the GOP is basically sitting on their hands and throwing an occassional rock into the crowd(why even bother to go to work). I don't expect them to approve of Democrat legislation but atleast attempt honest critiques(which means not using falsehoods).

These base politics are killing the two party system.
The Chuck Grassley saga was a perfect example of someone who retreated because there simply isn't any tolerance for bipartisanship amoung the activists.

You have situations where there are periods of unrepresented masses(GOP congressman essentially doing nothing) depending on who has what majorities. That is why we have tea partiers on the right and nutty lefties(aside from Bush's incompetence) who fret about government takeovers. Term limits and apolitical redistricting are are a must in this situation.

MoveOn to Fund Primary Challengers to Any Senator Who Blocks Up or Down Vote

In the wake of Tuesday’s vote democrats have made hay of a GOP civil war but all is not well on their side either.  Move-On and Democracy of America are putting up $3.5 million to fund primary challenges against any Democratic Senator who blocks an up or down vote on the public option.

http://blogs.abcnews.com/george/2009/11/moveon-to-fund-primary-challengers-to-any-senator-who-blocks-up-or-down-vote.html

Why don't these wars seem at all "civil"? Eventually both parties will strive for ideological purity and a viable 3rd party will finally emerge from the ruins.

WITHOUT ANY FEAR OF CONTRADICTION  ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION WAS NEVER MEANT TO BE STOPPED. Very few politicians have tried to halt the occupancy by foreign invaders to our country? This is why the E-Verify mechanism was never mandated, owing to the fact that Americans are last to be a priority, specially the 15.3 million jobless workers. Already Hispanic Caucuses have confronted President Obama at the White House, with the chair of the House Rules Committee indicating they are giving the Caucuses what they have adamantly demanded. Rep. Louise Slaughter D-N.Y indicated that the House will have to vote on a bill that allows illegal aliens to use the new health care "exchange". A loophole that does not require verification to keep illegal aliens out of the other parts of the proposed new federal health care system.  Please call all Democratic House Members and urge them to vote against the rule that provides a weak verification mechanism that still allows illegal aliens to purchase insurance from the health care exchange. WE MUST JAM THE SWITCHBOARDS IN WASHINGTON, PUSHING OUR OWN DEMANDS at 202-224-3121 that bars illegal aliens from the health care insurance "exchange" YOUR VOICE IS MAKING AN IMMENSE DIFFERENCE TO HOW THE POLITICIANS VOTE?

'...earlier this year, a deranged Army sergeant named John Russell opened fire near a combat stress clinic -- sound familiar?...'

That doesn't count, he was a Conservative Republican

From Washington Monthly:

'...BRINGING OUT THE WORST IN SMALL, SAD MINDS.... \On "Fox & Friends" this morning, the hosts speculated about the need for "special screenings" of Muslim officers in the U.S. military. It follows a certain child-like reasoning -- Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan went on a deadly rampage yesterday, shooting 43 people. Hasan is Muslim. Therefore, Muslims in uniform may be untrustworthy.

Soon after, Allen West, a top recruit of the National Republican Congressional Committee in Florida, announced his belief that, in light of the Fort Hood tragedy, the "enemy is infiltrating our military." West, one of 32 new members of the NRCC "Young Guns" program a congressional candidate in the Miami area next year, added, "Our soldiers are being brainwashed."

Now, at this point, we have no idea what led a 14-veteran of the U.S. Army to commit such a heinous crime, but there's a frightening ease with which too many conservatives embrace bigotry like this.

Spencer Ackerman gets this exactly right.

To make a point no one should have to make: earlier this year, a deranged Army sergeant named John Russell opened fire near a combat stress clinic -- sound familiar? -- at Baghdad's Camp Liberty and killed five of his fellow soldiers. No one speculated about any religious motivations. No one suggested he was part of an enemy "infiltration," or suggested that U.S. troops have been "brainwashed." Everyone understood that Russell was a deranged lunatic, not an advance scout for a conspiracy to subvert the military internally. It's funny how double standards work.

Actually, no. It's disgusting.

A tragic part of American life is that, from time to time, we learn of horrific shootings like the one at Fort Hood yesterday. There was, apparently, another shooting this morning, this time in Orlando, in which one was killed and seven were critically wounded. The gunman wasn't a Muslim.

Likewise, last year, 32 people were shot down in Virginia Tech. In March, 10 were killed in a shooting rampage in Alabama. In April, 13 were killed in upstate New York. In each instance, the gunmen weren't Muslim.

It's been 24 hours since the violence began at Fort Hood. Can we wait just a little while before jumping to conclusions and making baseless allegations about Americans who haven't done anything wrong?...'

Americans will suffer if this bill is passed in any form.

It's not even 100% about health Care. It's all politics.

If a nation wide survey of doctors shows 71% of them support HCR and the public option, why would the GOP hold their breath that state doctors might change the AMA's evaluation.  Doctors know our health care system is broken and has been for some time.  Red state doctors maybe like a few of the GOPers in Congress who claim to be doctors and behave like quacks.

Didn't hear much defense of the GOP's alternative health care plan, not even Boehner or Cantor are trying to defend their bill AFTER the CBO destroyed it by noting it would cost $36 B more and increase the number of uninsured by 6 million--must have been all those "plums" for the insurance companies and tax cuts.

Here's a thought, FR.  Maybe, the democrats would like to stop the endless delays and the 24/7 chatter focus and get this legislation passed and be able to go home to explain it to their constituents.  No bills are perfect but there is a point at which you say enough tweaking the edges, it's time to move forward.
Julie, Palm Desert, CA (Sent Friday, November 06, 2009 2:38 PM): “I have a question for the anti health reformers. Why is it okay to add billions to the deficit to kill people (two unfunded wars and the related nation building) but not okay to add to the defict to save American lives? “

I guess everyone likes paying through the nose for health insurance -- while doctors and hospitals and other providers get squeezed. That's not by the government, but by INSURANCE COMPANIES. They get to "tax" employers, individuals, everybody and siphon never-ending amounts of money from the economy for themselves.

And people are worried about the government? At least if we don't like what the government does, we can elect new representatives and pass new laws.

Wait a minute! That's what we did in 2008!! Now let them do their job. If it's a bust -- which it won't be since people will SAVE mney -- the GOP can charge back into power and let the insurace companies go back to their gouging and making money on people's misery. The GOP will declare it a failure the minute it has passed anyway, so I don't take very seriously what they, their supporters, and the other morons making ridiculous, unsupported assertions about what HCR will do.

Let it pass and see. I would sign up for the public option in a minute if it's cheaper than what Blue Cross charges -- and I'm not even that upset with my premium!!
Any democrat who votes against this health insurance reform will not only screw over the American public for the sake of insurance company profits, but will guarantee huge election losses for the democratic party and loss of the majority. All of the so-called "moderate" democrats, are the same knuckleheads who voted to deregulate financial markets and to invade Iraq, so their track record of judgement is none too stellar. If these spineless twits are worried about job security, they will without question be out of the job next election. If this health reform passes, the democratic party will absolutely cream the GOP in next election cycle.
I never fail to laugh when something is funny.  If the impression around here is that I don't laugh, there is an obvious conclusion to be drawn from that.
Tomorrow, maybe.  That's good decisive leadership for you.
What do you think the unemployment rate would be without the stimulus? - Christian, New York

8%. 8.5% tops. And it would have been that low because the banks and insurance companies would have solved their own problems. More would have went out of business, but better managed banks and insurance companies would have picked up the slack. GM would be gone, but Ford would have benefited. And the state governments, the biggest recipients of the Stimulus money, would have cut their budgets to reasonable levels. Now the states will just have to do their cuts next year, unless Obama pushes through another trillion dollar Stimulus plan. Instead we have poor businesses propped up with borrowed government money. The worst of both worlds.
While I was outside raking leaves (again), looks like everyone was busy with the previous thread.  Read a few, will read more later; some good ones so far.

Izzy, Buffalo.  Glad to hear from a republican who objected to the over-the-line stuff at the tea party rally yesterday, particularly the Congressional members whose appearance endorsed that kind of hate.
They should be running away from them as far and fast as possible.
Today, Ranking Member of the House Ways and Means Committee Dave Camp (R-MI) released a letter from the non-partisan Joint Committee on Taxation (JCT) confirming that the failure to comply with the individual mandate to buy health insurance contained in the Pelosi health care bill (H.R. 3962, as amended) could land people in jail.  The JCT letter makes clear that Americans who do not maintain “acceptable health insurance coverage” and who choose not to pay the bill’s new individual mandate tax (generally 2.5% of income), are subject to numerous civil and criminal penalties, including criminal fines of up to $250,000 and imprisonment of up to five years.

But I'm sure this part of the bill will be removed before it's voted on. Just like government paid abortions and coverage for illeglals
