Our turn for Palin book excerpt

Posted: Sunday, November 15, 2009 2:08 AM by Chuck Todd

From various NBC News producers/writers

NBC News has obtained an advanced copy of Sarah Palin's new book, "Going Rogue: An American Life" Below are some of the fascinating excerpts, thanks to the tireless efforts of the fine folks working the late shift. The excerpts are presented in order as they appear in the book.

-- On Carter and Reagan: "I had followed the Iran hostage crisis and remember wondering why President Jimmy Carter didn't act more decisively.  From my high schooler's perspective, I thought the question was, Why did he allow America to be humiliated and pushed around?  The new president being sworn in radiated confidence and optimism.  The enemies of freedom took notice.  In years to come people would ask, What did he have that Carter didn't?  To me the answer was obvious.  He had a steel spine.

-- On giving birth for the first time: "I was quite a cocky young mom-to-be.  I'd gone through the requisite childbirth class (we were going to use the Lamaze method), and, being an athlete used to pain, I figured, How tough could giving birth be?   Oh. My. Gosh.  I thought I was going to die.  In fact, I began to pray that I would die. . . . I gritted my teeth and willed myself not to scream."

-- On the political environment in Juneau (Alaska's capital): "Politically, Juneau always had a reputation for being a lot like Animal House:  drinking and bowling, drunken brawls, countless affairs, and garden-variety lunchtime trysts.  It's been known at times to be like a frat house filled with freshmen away from their parents for the very first time.  At other times, the capital city's underside was even darker:  clandestine political liaisons and secret meetings, unethical deeds and downright illegal acts.  . . . In short, it was a lot like Washington, D.C."

-- On learning their baby had Down's Syndrome: 'Todd said, "It's going to be okay."
I asked if he had the same question I had:  "Why us?" He looked genuinely surprised by my question and responded calmly, "Why not us?"

-- On learning of Bristol's pregnancy: "The month after Trig was born, Bristol came to Todd and me and told us the shocking news that she was pregnant. Truthfully, I was devastated for my daughter.  It wasn't the morality of the situation--what was done was done. It was that I saw her future change in an instant."

-- On how the Bristol news was handled by the campaign: "We were not giddy-happy that our unwed teenage daughter was pregnant, as the press release suggested.  Todd and I were proud of Bristol's selfless decision to have her baby and her determination to deal with difficult circumstances by taking responsibility for her actions.  But in no way did I want to send the message that teenage pregnancy was something to endorse, much less glamorize."

And now some campaign related excerpts:

-- On getting the call from McCain: "For some reason, when the call came at the State Fair, it didn't come as a huge shock. ... I certainly didn't think, Well, of course this would happen. But neither did I think, What an astonishing idea."

-- On her belief in creationism and how she debated McCain manager Steve Schmidt about it: "But your dad's a science teacher," Schmidt objected. "Yes."  "Then you know that science proves evolution," added Schmidt.  "Parts of evolution," I said.  "But I believe that God created us and also that He can create an evolutionary process that allows species to change and adapt."  Schmidt winced and raised his eyebrows.  In the dim light, his sunglasses shifted atop his hear. I had just dared to mention the C-word:  creationism.  But I felt I was on solid factual ground.

-- On Hillary Clinton: "Should Secretary Clinton and I ever sit down over a cup of coffee, I know that we will fundamentally disagree on may issues, but my hat is off to her hard work on the 2008 campaign trail. Compared to the guys she squared off against, a lot of her supporters think she proved what Margaret Thatcher proclaimed: "If you want something said, ask a man. If you want something done, ask a woman."

-- On meeting Tina Fey at "SNL": "The campaign's "Fey Fears" turned out to be overblown. Instead, when I met her, she was friendly and gracious. ... Without managers and handles swarming around ... it was just a nice mom moment. "Believe it or not, I've got Republicans in my family," Tina said, smiling. "Believe it or not," I said, 'I've got Democrats in mine."

-- On the reports of her lavish clothes spending, courtesy of the RNC: "My family was made to look like a herd of hillbillies who had come to the big city and started living high on the hog, and that hurt me for them."

Is this her FIRST book?
What a wonderful job of writing.  Whoever wrote this had to sound like Palin and still use acceptable English.  Must be a genius.
Sarah and hind-sight comments. Sarah please no explainations are needed we all make mistakes. please go away away. we forgive you just as we forgive ourselves but lets not think for one moment that we believe that addmitting our mistakes qualifies us for a job beyond our capabilities. you are not qualified to run the greatest country in the world. please go away

All together now.....YAAAAAAWWWWN!
Please give her the dang talk show already so we can stop worrying about her ever holding office again.
Well, Sarah has proved time and again that she has limited intellectual resources. That people are spending their time on her nonsensical views is absurdity at it peak. I am in no way demeaning her as a person but as someone who thinks she weilds the authority to influence minds with her nonsense thoughts is not acceptable. To all her followers you prove that intelligence is worthless while stupidity is your religion.
Does anyone doubt she's gonna run? Why would she do this if she doesn't plan on running?

Barack Obama will be shaking in his boots in no time.

He awakened the sleeping giant - conservative America

PALIN 2012
Wow.  She could have been one 72-year-old heartbeat from the presidency.

Wow.
Stick a fork in her, she is done in elective politics.
I am an independent that voted for McCain.  Palin was just along for the ride.  I knew he wanted a woman hoping to pick up the women that were disappointed with Sec. Clinton not being selected as the nominee.  But Palin proved to be and is one the most uninformed American candidated that has ever run for this high office.  If McCain had been elected and she would have been sworn in "May God help the U.S."  She is a bafoon.  Plain and Simple.
Law demands like begat like.  Law demands humans produce humans, fish fish, and mammals mammals from the begining of time to the end of time.  The theory of evolution is false science.
Looks like she believes in creationism AND evolution.  Sorry hon, (Sarah) you can't ride the fence on this one.  Choose only one...and you might want to listen to your Dad before you choose.  I don't want science to go to the back of the class, which is what would happen if creationists were in control of our schools.  I shudder at the thought...
Sarah Palin hates Juneau, what a liar.  None of us Alaskans like her.  We're pretty embarrassed of the affect she's had upon our state.
Creationism? Are you kidding me? Creationism on top of everything else? Yes, make her the Republican 2012 Presidential nominee. We might as well just trivialize them into extinction.
Sarah turns out to be a good person.I just don"t think she has the proper education, knowledge or experience to B President! No training in HISTORY,ECONOMICS OR INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS.She is NOT FAMILIAR WITH CURRENT GEO-POLITICAL OR SOCIO-ECONOMIC CONDITIONS AROUND THE GLOBE!I do agree with her statement "GOD CREATED A SYSTEM OF EVOLUTION".MAN"S KNOWLEDGE & COMPREHENSION AT THE TIME OF GENESIS WAS EXTREMELY LIMITED!THE BIBLE COULD NOT SAY 5,000 YEARS AGO,THE LORD SEEDED THE EARTH & MILLIONS OF YEARS LATER MAN CAME INTO EXISTENCE!THE BIBLE SAYS "A DAY TO THE LORD IS AS IS A THOUSAND YEARS".HUMANS AT THE TIME HAD NO IDEA OF THE MEANING OF MILLIONS.
Since it may be some time before I read Palin's "book", I have to admit, the suspense is tolerable...
Shocking! Absolutely shocking!

MSNBC gets an advanced copy of the book and we get such damning
exposes of political impotence, malfeasance, and jawdropping incompetence.

I'm glad I stayed up for the scoop.
How long oh lord how long?
I think she is a normal and strong woman, whose life was clearly blown out of proportion by the hungry media. I still do not think she was a right candidate for John McCain's Vice Presidential spot though.
I met Sarah Palin on a flight from Minnesota to Anchorage.  She was friendly, outgoing and gracious to, not only me, but to other passengers who wanted to have their pictures taken with her, or to talk about Alaska politics.  Is she ready to be a serious candidate for President - I don't know.  Is she a gracious lady - a resounding Yes!
Regarding her creationism views, eh, big deal. But it's absurd for her to say she "believes" something in one sentence and then boast in the next that "I felt I was on solid factual ground". If you run with a belief as the backbone of your argument then, by definition, you are not on solid factual ground. You can still feel that you won the argument, but you can't claim so because of the facts. Makes no sense.
Really. I bet some of our respectable Alaskan State legislators would love to hear her description of Juneau and their apparently raucous behavior.  Ms. Palin, with a juvenile delinquent son (oh! Did she fail to mention that?)and her pregnant teenage daughter apparently does not like to be responsible for her own lack of parenting skills.  It really is tiresome and pathetic that she continues to point fingers and is not accountable for any of her own behavior.  She will get rich and continue to lead those who need pablum, but my guess is that the masses with any intellect will see her as a sorry excuse for a leader, lacking the basic educational skills needed to ensure a full term as governor.  Pretty sad.
I don't blame Palin for her simplistic thinking. She doesn't seem to be able to think more than a few steps ahead in any realm. I do blame the republican party for making us a laughing stock in the last campaign by putting her on the ticket. I would rather vote for someone who is a little more liberal than I would like than for a woman that is a complete idiot. Now that i think about it I would like Palin to just fade away.
No words to express my disgust! Does no believe in calling her on her lies and crap?   Ughhhh
This is interesting.  Ms Palin is neither as stupid nor as brilliant as our "objective" news media would have you believe.
Good stuff guys. Thank you for staying up late into the night reading what could be the greatest comedy of all time.
Ronald Reagan worked a secret arms deal with the Iranians while he was running for President. The arms and money is the only reason why the Iranians released the hostages. Reagan committed treason.
god created evolution.  god bless palin for remaking words to suit her next campaign.  maybe if she can get her homophones right, she'll win in 2012.
If you were trying to find something controversial in the book, you failed.  The only thing I found "fascinating" were the spelling errors in the quotes.

"Without managers and handles swarming around" - should be "handlers"
"his sunglasses shifted atop his hear." - should be "head"
"we will fundamentally disagree on may issues," - should be "many"

Surely you don't want us to think that they came from the original text of the book.
if the rest of the book is like this I might even read it...  very little b-s...  sounds like she knows where she is in this nutty world, and in the nuttier political one....
Sarah Palin seems home-spun and honest.  Early on she certainly learned right from wrong and followed through with her actions as Governor, cleaning up where her predecessors dirtied politics.  As for her belief in Creationism, I don't think anyone realizes just how big and powerful God really is as well as patient and full of love.  When one honestly gets off their own throne in life and lets Him take the reins, things really do change for the better.  Been there done that - Grace is quite amazing!
Sarah is much more like "middle" america than the washington or hollywood crowd any day. My kind of people.
Once braindead, always braindead...
"Schmidt winced and raised his eyebrows.  In the dim light, his sunglasses shifted atop his hear."

What is a "hear"?

Congress, Article V is Peremptory -- Afraid? Don't Trust We The People?

I feel Sarah was wrong in saying her daughter would be doing the right thing in marrying the baby's dad. That was her daughter's decision to make , not Sarahs.
As we see now, no marriage has taken place and would have been a bad sisuation for both a young mom and baby to be put in. You marry for love, not to make your Mom look good.
Please..please...just go away!
