Michelle Obama on mentoring

Posted: Monday, November 16, 2009 3:30 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Wendy Jones
Introduced by the First Lady of Colorado (Jeannie Ritter), Michelle Obama addressed a group of young women at a luncheon in Denver, part of the White House initiatve on mentoring.

In her opening remarks, Ritter told her audience that "as young women you also have to be ready to accept that mentoring ... and you have to have done some interior work about what your strengths are."

Obama noted that there were many successful women in the room -- cabinet secretaries, CEOs, a former ambassador, an astronaut. But, she cautioned, "They didn't get to this stage because of some magic." Like her, some came from modest backgrounds. All worked hard.

Said the First Lady: "We've all found someone who told us we were not good enough .... We've all failed, all made mistakes ... but we did not let those mistakes shatter us .... That is what you can learn from the women in this room .... Everything you need to be successful you own."

And she urged them to start mentoring now, like she encouraged her older daughter with respect to her sister.

"I want each of you to think about how you are going to give back ... whether you are a scientist or a teacher (or the governor or the president) whatever your goals are...we ask that you remember this day and think about who you are going to bring with you."

this is political news that deserves comment/debate because?...

Did Michelle bow first?
You act like G.W. took office and immediately and unilaterally sent our men and woman into war.

I don't "act like he did;" I am saying HE DID!!  HE DID!! And I haven't heard an apology from him, either, not a once!! In fact, when asked if he could name "one mistake he made during his first term," he stated, "I can't think of one mistake I made."  Helloooooooooo ARROGANCE!! And many here state Obama is arrogant!! Give me a freakin break!!

I'll ignore the rest of your rhetoric; it makes no sense anyway!!
Oh no!  There goes the First Lady again!  Can't she learn where her place is?  Geeze!  What nerve!
And this is political news?? Yeah, work hard women and you can be on this stage with Michelle Obama...or you could just marry someone that is successful like her or Hillary. Maybe Palin should have been on the stage because she is a much better example of a woman that has worked hard to achieve success success. Without their husbands, Hillary and Michelle are nobodies. Palin actually became governor and has now sold more books than the Kennedy memoirs and she didn't have to rely upon the success of her husband to get there.
The military had Hasan figured out. Because of our PC world though, no one wanted to do anything about it, less they be busted for being "insensitive" to the minority.
I notice you didn't respond about the e-mails. I wonder why?
Gunther Wente (Sent Monday, November 16, 2009 3:06 PM)

I wonder how Hasan managed to escape anyone in Bush's Administration?? Hmmm; oh wait; it wasn't Bush's fault, or anyone that worked for him!! Hasan was only in the military his ENTIRE presidency, as well as EDUCATED during his ENTIRE presidency!!

You want to go down the blame route?? Go ahead; you will LOSE!!

Most of the information leaked to date clearly states his presentations, which alarmed fellow students and colleagues; his statements against the wars, etc. were made under the Administration of George W. Bush!!

Point the fingers all you want; if indeed the final report states it was an act based on his extremist religious beliefs, ALL fingers will point back to George W. Bush's Klan!!
So go down that road; I don’t think you’ll like the smell when you get to the end of the boulevard!!
If George W. Bush had been the first President to need a teleprompter installed to be able to get through a press conference, would you have laughed and said this is more proof of
how inept he is on his own and is really controlled by smarter men behind the scenes?

If George W. Bush had spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to take Laura Bush to a play in NYC, would you have approved?

If George W. Bush had made a joke at the expense of the Special Olympics, would you have approved?

If George W. Bush had given Gordon Brown a set of inexpensive and incorrectly formatted DVDs, when Gordon Brown had given him a thoughtful and historically significant gift, would
you have approved?

If George W. Bush had given the Queen of England an iPod containing videos of his speeches, would you have thought this embarrassingly narcissistic and tacky?

If George W. Bush had bowed to the King of Saudi Arabia, would you have approved?

If George W. Bush had visited Austria and made reference to the non-existent "Austrian language," would you have brushed it off as a minor slip?

If George W. Bush had filled his cabinet and circle of advisers with people who cannot seem to keep current in their income taxes, would you  have approved?

If George W. Bush had been so Spanish illiterate as to refer to "Cinco de Cuatro" in front of the Mexican ambassador when it was the 5th of May (Cinco de Mayo), and continued to
flub it when he tried again, would you have winced in embarrassment?

If George W. Bush had mis-spelled the word "advice" would you have hammered him for it for years like Dan Quayle and potatoe as proof of what a dunce he is?

If George W. Bush had burned 9,000 gallons of jet fuel to go plant a single tree on Earth Day, would you have concluded he's a hypocrite?

If George W. Bush's administration had okayed Air Force One flying low over millions of people followed by a jet fighter in downtown Manhattan causing widespread panic, would you have wondered whether they actually  get what happened on 9-11?

If George W. Bush had failed to send relief aid to flood victims throughout the Midwest with more people killed or made homeless than in New Orleans, would you want it made into a major ongoing political issue with claims of racism and incompetence?

If George W. Bush had ordered the firing of the CEO of a major corporation, even though he had no constitutional authority to do so, would you have approved?

If George W Bush had proposed to double the national debt, which had taken more than two centuries to accumulate, in one year, would you have approved?

If George W. Bush had then proposed to double the debt again within 10 years, would you have approved?

So, tell me again, what is it about Obama that makes him so brilliant and impressive? He's done all this in 10 months -- so you'll have three years and two months to come up with an answer.

Okay, this was just too funny. Some thought was put into this.

Did anyone see the story on 60 minutes last night on the WMD that was found in Iraq and what Saddam did to his people? That was very interesting and sad.

Looks like in this case, Obama - Bush not same same
A representative of Chairman Levin's office confirmed that the Committee postponed the briefing at the request of the Obama administration.

No another Delay? I thought they got Tom Delay off of Dancing with the Stars?

Getting old Obama. The RAT takes the cheese. No ability to make the hard choices or decisions. Weak

Big December Jobs Summit Coming hey Barack?

United States Department of Labor official statistics:
U-6 Total unemployed, plus all marginally attached workers, plus total employed part time for economic reasons, as a percent of the civilian labor force plus all marginally attached workers:
September 2008 10.6%  Bush
September 2009 17.0%  Obama

Now Mr. Obama, did you not say that your Stimulus Package was to PREVENT unemployment from rising over 7%? I guess if you spin it just right you were telling the truth for once!

It's the only orifice they know how to speak out of!!

Since this was directed at feisty, for once Pam Bignardi you are absaloutley correct!!

Or you can do what I did : Move to Chicago ,Marry a Stae Senator, and immediately get a house way cheap and get put on a couple a  different boards and get a couple hundred thou for doing nothing.
Brilliant.  Excellent.  Transformative.  Words can't easily describe this endeavor.  Society benefits when kids are inspired in this manner.  While many republicans will dislike this idea (they are against anything that improves society), it's good to see Democrats once again take the leadership role in this capacity.
I am quite surprised to see Michelle on Seasame street and having these conferences when her husband is touring Asia.
Someone in that administration should have advised them to travel to Asia together because it shows unity and support to the president and her husband.  In Asia, one coming down the stairs from the airplane will be laughed at as being very weak.  His wife at his side would have provided support.   Remember Nancy and Ronald Reagan.

I don't know what liberalized version of the Constitution you are reading from but the separation of church and state is nowhere in the Constitution or any of its admendments.  So if you would like to get your information straight before going blindly off on someone else that would probably be a good thing.  You make yourself look small.  Most of you libs have that problem.  If we weren't such a PC weakened country that occured from libs like yourself we wouldn't have half the problems you are complaining about.  And GWB with crimes against humanity?!?!?  How about the aholes that flew planes into buildings of innocent people or blow up little girls attending school or set them on fire for attending schools.  Your moral equivalentcies are frightning!!!
Since this was directed at feisty, for once Pam Bignardi you are absaloutley correct!!

Yeah, nice try; it was NOT directed at Feisty; and Feisty is smart enough to figure that out - you on the other hand....................!!
notice you didn't respond about the e-mails. I wonder why?

As a dear friend of mine says, you and your ilk in the Republican Party are like a farter in a room; you look around pretending it's not you when you know darn well it is!! Keep pointing now; that finger will be pointing right back at YOUR Party, the Republican Party!!
The post was about you libs being scared of a smart, strong, educated, rich, powerful, beautiful conservative woman, I believe her name is Sarah Palin.
Please try to keep up now.
proud republican (Sent Monday, November 16, 2009 3:34 PM)

I've read PLENTY of your posts defending George W. Bush; oh, and that woman you describe is the polar opposite of everything Palin stands for!! Hillary Clinton would be that woman!!

Do keep up now!!
You act like G.W. took office and immediately and unilaterally sent our men and woman into war.

So the resolution that was voted on by the majority of the senate was just for show.  You seem to forget that a mjority of DEMOCRATIC senators voted for the resolution 29 to 21 (they were in the majority) and if they were so against it could have denied GWB the authority to go to war.
Always amusing when GOPers stoops to silliness --like discouraging acts that are meant to encourage.  Like speaking negatively of a mentoring program for youth.  It is certainly a clear sign that the GOP is dead.   Walking around with their head hanging low -- reduced to looking for problems instead of delivering solutions.    To the bitter GOPers posting comments:  Why waste time discouraging a mentoring program?  What kind of adults did your parents raise you to be?  This is America -- go out and encourage the next generation.
Kim,
Times have changed.  First Lady Michelle Obama is far more independent, energetic and intelligent than Nancy Reagan or the wives of most world leaders.  This is indeed is a GOOD thing.  Michelle is a positive role model for women.  Fortunately, President Barack Obama's hand is stronger on multiple levels wherever he travels.  He does not need a prop.

Unfortunately, had Michele Obama traveled with the President the G-NO-P simply would have labelled it a vacation.
