Barack Obama moved into the lead today in the last category that Sen. Hillary Clinton had claimed to have an edge -- support among the Democratic Party's superdelegates.

The Illinois Democrat grabbed the superdelegate lead thanks to a switch by New Jersey Rep. Donald Payne and an endorsement from previously uncommitted Rep. Peter DeFazio of Oregon.

Those two votes gave Obama a 267-266 lead over Clinton. That is a huge shift since the days when Clinton boasted about a 60-plus vote lead among the party's pros back on Super Tuesday.

Clinton Fights On, Obama Focuses on McCain
While the New York Democrat is refusing to concede defeat and is hoping a victory in Tuesday's West Virginia primary will keep her dwindling hopes alive, Obama is starting to focus instead on his Republican opponent John McCain.

ABC News' senior political correspondent George Stephanopoulos reported on "Good Morning America" that Obama's team is considering using some of his campaign cash to fund ads against the Arizona senator.

His camp is also planning to announce a 50-state registration rally this weekend, a tactic geared to a November election rather than the remaining Democratic primaries.

The rest of the Democratic Party, however, is struggling with how to end Clinton's challenge and worries that a last-ditch effort by Clinton could be damaging to Obama.

They were particularly unnerved by Clinton's comments earlier this week that appeared to be racially insensitive or racially calculated when she said, "Sen. Obama's support among working, hardworking Americans, white Americans, is weakening again."

"This is exactly the kind of talk that is going to make superdelegates nervous," Stephanopoulos said. "Most of the uncommitted superdelegates and party leaders like House Speaker Nancy Pelosi are willing to forgo pressuring her to get out of the race as long as the rhetoric stays in tact."

Panetta Calls for Clinton to Concede
Former top Clinton administration aide Leon Panetta told KGO TV in San Francisco, "It's pretty clear unless there's a bolt of lightning, Barack Obama is likely to win the Democratic nomination. She's put up a good fight and put up a good race, but I think there's a time now where she needs to concede and unify the party."

If Clinton decides to fight on, Panetta advised that she "should remain on issues, they shouldn't engage in personal attacks. & Whether the winner wins will depend an awful lot on how the loser loses."

There are indications that Clinton is taking a hard look at her options. She has scheduled a meeting Wednesday -- the day after the West Virginia primary -- with her campaign's major financial backers at her Washington mansion.

Stephanopoulos said there was also "lots of very quiet waltzing behind the scenes with intermediaries representing Sens. Clinton and Obama" to engineer a "dream ticket" with Clinton as Obama's vice president.

"I should say there's an expectation that Sen. Obama is reluctant to go down this road for a host of reasons, but others are making the case this is the most powerful ticket for the Democratic Party," Stephanopoulos reported.

For many Democrats, however, Conan O'Brien had it right.

In discussing the states where the two candidates were favored, the comedian quipped, "Hillary is favored in the state of denial."

ABC News' Karen Travers contributed to this report.

Copyright © 2008 ABC News Internet Ventures
Strongest at top of ticket?

Well, la dee, da. Obama, D-Ill., picked up two superdelegates this morning giving him a new metric to tout in addition to his current commanding leads in pledged delegates, popular votes, states won, and money raised.

Rep. Donald Payne, D-N.J., switched his endorsement from Clinton to Obama and Rep. Peter DeFazio, D-Ore., endorsed Obama. DeFazio was previously uncommitted.

With these endorsements, Obama has the support of 267 superdelegates and Clinton has 265 superdelegates.

Every news organization's superdelegate count is a little different because it is an imperfect science. Since October 2007, the Political Unit has continuously reached out to the nearly 800 superdelegates to determine their candidate preference. We also reach out regularly to the Obama and Clinton campaigns for their superdelegate lists and work to confirm any that they include on their lists.

Clinton’s advantage among superdelegates was once massive and has been dwindling steadily since Super Tuesday, when she was ahead by over 60 superdelegates.

Clinton’s institutional support from within the Democratic Party allowed her to build a commanding lead in superdelegates over Obama in the early part of this nomination battle.

Despite several rough weeks on the campaign trail, Obama has maintained momentum in picking up superdelegates. Obama has outpaced Clinton at every marker of this campaign since Super Tuesday -- after the controversial comments of Rev. Wright came out, after Clinton’s big win in Pennsylvania and after the Indiana and North Carolina primaries.

Below are the superdelegate tallies, as of this morning, from other news organizations:

ABC
OBAMA 267
CLINTON 265

CBS
CLINTON 271
OBAMA 261

CNN
CLINTON 268
OBAMA 258

NBC
CLINTON 274
OBAMA 260

AP
CLINTON 271
OBAMA 256

New York Times
CLINTON 263
OBAMA 258

Politico
CLINTON 268.5
OBAMA 260

Washington Post (uses AP statistics)
CLINTON 271
OBAMA 256
Strongest at top of ticket?

16 members of Congress. That's it? There are like 206 Dems in Congress. That's like 8% of Congressional Dems who released the letter supporting Hillary. Hardly impressive.

Strongest at top of ticket?

What a bunch of idiots. Her supporters even have the gall to tout her win in Florida which was not even a contest. Senator Obama did not campaign there and there is no way of knowing if she would have really won there if had been given a chance to meet Floridians face to face.

Basically what they are saying is it does not matter who the PEOPLE have voted for, it is up to us to overturn their decision and give HRC the coronation she deserves WITHOUT earning it!

I am sorry, but Senator Obama has had one heck of an uphill fight from the very beginning. He has run a remarkable campaign. Very strategic and worked it from the ground up, not just EXPECTING the nomination to be handed to him. HE HAS WORKED FOR IT AND EARNED IT!

I am saddened that HRC is feeling bad for herself and is now using RACE and her supporters to try and somehow take this nomination away from Senator Obama. Doesn't she realize that are many AA, hard working white women and men, hispanics, orientals, etc., who have supported Senator Obama, and if she were to somehow wrest the nomination away from him, we would seriously have to consider why we should vote for her at all?? I am not saying we would vote for McSame. His policies are a continuation of the Bush years. But there ARE many of us who would just NOT vote.

She can't win without the rest of us. She CAN'T win with just the hard-working, blue-collar white workers she so ardently favors right now because they are the people currently still voting for her.

This is a joke and an embarrassment. Please stop the madness! There is damage being done here! Get a clue, HRC. You have lost to the better candidate who - from the start - campaigned in ALL of the states, for ALL Americans and didn't take the nomination for granted.

Obama '08

Strongest at top of ticket?

I wonder how much there endorsement cost?? They probably got paid a little bonus for the letter. Keep going Hillary, you make yourself look far worse than I ever thought you were.

Strongest at top of ticket?

Chuck, Are these people already committed to her as super delegates? Thanks for clarification.

Strongest at top of ticket?

Does her mother also endorse her, Chuck?

Go ahead, take Friday off for real, man. You do deserve it.

Strongest at top of ticket?

Hillary has no stregnth left. Obama has legitimately won the most delegates, the most primaries, and the most votes; yet these few "officials" declare that they know what's best?
There's an old saying:"money talks, BS walks". Where is Hillary's money support? There is a crazy film producer that "threatened" Pelosi to withhold support from the DNC. So what. Obama has 1.5 million FINANCIAL supporters. Where's Hillary's support? If her candidacy was so viable, why can't she raise money?
Why haven't the "blue collar" supporters she pandered to come to her rescue in the form of DOLLARS? Why haven't all the supporters who claim they will vote for McCain if Hillary doesn't win support her with MONEY? Surely, if there enough of you out there, Hillary would be able to pay her bills.
No, the bottom line is that the authors of this letter are trying to pander to the worst of us; the part of us who succumbs to fear mongering and code words. this is an effort to anoint Hillary with a nomination she hasn't won and doesn't deserve. Their letter may be from a misguided sense of loyalty; or fear of retribution from the Clintons.
These elected Democratic officials should realize what the rest of us do: the primary season is over. Job one is to end the Republican domination and defeat Bush/McCain/Cheney/Halliburton. Continuing to attempt to prop up Clinton based on the code words "swing state voters" (translation: white males) is divisive and will lead to McCain winning in the fall.
Maybe you all don't care; perhaps you will maintain your favors and perks from the Clinton/McCain/Bush lobbyist/PAC/Donor circus. But for the American people who are not "connected"; we will not be so fortunate.
Oh and get a clue. Hillary WILL NOT win in 2012 either. We have long memories, and WILL remember how you all have tried to screw a candidate out of a legitimate win by the basest form of fear mongering and entitlement.

Strongest at top of ticket?

As Bill would say, this is a "fairy tale." The candidate with far and away the highest negative ratings, who's thrown the most mud, who has squandered the biggest lead and has run a campaign that often didn't even know what the rules were is NOT the best one to lead the ticket.

Strongest at top of ticket?

16 Members of the House who have no future politcal ambition and have been promised seven figure jobs as curators at the Clinton library.

Strongest at top of ticket?

Talk about Testicular Fortitude. This is a very ballsy move on her part as well as the ridiculous 16 who dared sign this letter and send it on her behalf. What has the Clinton's promised them?

I was truly hoping that Hillary would take the high road and think of the democratic party. Now I really do believe that this has been about her and Bill redeeming their names in the White House.

If she really cared about us white working middles class Americans; she would show some class and remove herself. Stop trying to divide the country by race, you are no better than Rev. I'm not being sarcastic at all, it concerns very much. I think it was so traumatic for her not being the nominee after Feb 5, she's tried everything, gone in debt and still losing. I seriously believe she's developed some sort of Traumatic Sress Disorder, coupled with her already arrogant and entitled attitude. Supers, please be kind and end this. This John Edwards wish-wash shows exactly why he didn't do any better than he did. McCain won the Republican primary by a much larger victory than Clinton..so shouldn't their logic say that he has the better chance to win in November.

Once again, the Clinton campaign redefines what the metric for winning should be. When they were up in delegates, it was all about the delegates. When she was trailing in delegates, it was all about momentum. When lead in delegates and contests won, it was all about the populare vote. When it became apparent that Clinton couldn't catch up in the popular vote, it is now all about electability. Let's see what is next...perhaps they will argue that only caucus states they won should count, since those were obviously the only ones that were fair. Maybe they'll argue that superdelegates should only count those hard-working, white americans that she recently suggested were the most important demographic to consider.

Give me a break. How could you not? That's why this is a great country. But to suggest that HRC's victory in Pennsylvania was some kind of wake-up call is just ridiculous! Who needed to be woken up to the fact that she was going to win PA? The fact that she didn't win by more than 9.1% was more of a wake-up call, in my mind. Why is nobody talking about the voters that she has lost? In every state in which the two candidates have campaigned, she has steadily lost ground to Obama. He has eroded her support levels nationwide. And what about the damage she's done to her support among African American voters? You can't be the Democratic nominee and win without support from the African American population.

We all know that there are people who will never vote for Obama -- let's call them what they are: certain women, certain white folks, most seniors, racists, and that absurd group of people who will say they believe he's a Muslim, no matter what. But, let's face it, all the rest of the thoughtful, enlightened, patriotic, hopeful (sorry) people in these states could be won by Obama if she were not in the race.

Strongest at top of ticket?

Shame on the Clintons and shame on these 16 people who signed this letter, or did they really draft and sign it? I do believe now that Clinton does not have the interest of the United States of America in mind, but only herself!

Clintons are not what they used to be! Or, maybe my eyes have been opened.

It's time to come together and back Barack Obama!

Strongest at top of ticket?

What a nice letter. However, I would be very disappointed that after the people of America have spoken that the nomination will still go to Clinton.

Its time to turn the page....

Strongest at top of ticket?

Thank you for providing the names who signed this letter. I think we should all write/call/stop them on the street and inundate them with our protests of this ridiculous position. Obama will be the nominee by all measures. There are so many lifelong Democrats who think Obama's "scary," who don't trust him after being in Wright's church, who have prejudices based on their belief he's too liberal or his middle name, or are deeply offended by the bitter comments. And they'd vote for McCain over Obama if Hillary's not the nominee.

As unfair and to an extent bigoted as some of these views may be, dismissing them or demeaning them or disregarding them is absolutely counterproductive. Instead of complaining about how divisive these arguments are and all that, the Obama campaign would be better served by making better overtures and taking more noticeable and more sincere steps to healing the wounds and fears created.

They say they're all about thinking outside the box: let's see it in this instance, because Hillary is right about this: the importance of these voters as well can not be undermined or understated.

Strongest at top of ticket?

If you don't believe in democracy, how can you represent the people? It is now clear that Clinton supporters do not have any argument left that the people have given her this nomination. I encourage everybody to remember every name on this letter and if ever you have the opportunity, vote against them.

I am officially withdrawing my membership in the Democratic Party. If this many of their members can decide that it is okay to put their own concerns over the will of the voters, this party is not what I thought I signed up for when I was 18 years old. From now on, no voting for lousy candidates just to be a good democrat. No more lesser of two evils. If a candidate wants my vote they will need to inspire me.

I will be voting for Obama in November. Its the Democratic (sic) Party's choice whether that is as their representative or as a write in.

Strongest at top of ticket?

There is a much bigger fight in the Democratic Party than which way the delegates vote.
Can the leader in delegates beat John McCain, that is the REAL QUESITION/

The Black Votes could care less; they just want Obama to win, simply because he is Black.

If you are going to have Super Delegates, then I would have to assume that you have given them the power to elect the person most likely to win the Office.

If they are not going to do that, then get rid of them.

If John McCain wins the Office, then the whole Party has totally screwed up!
Strongest at top of ticket?

Wow! Anyone willing to throw the election to McCain so that Hillary has another shot in 4 years is not a true Democrat.

Strongest at top of ticket?

The people who signed the letter forgot to say also what's best for them. My question is if only the so called battle ground states matter (Ohio, Pennsylvania and Florida) then why are the other 48 states voting? THis really amazes me. The people (from almost all of the states) have chosen Obama and the delegates are trying to throw the election. Why don't we just put McCain in office now. Why wait until Nov? Because that's what's going to happen if they steal the nomination. What makes Hillary so more qualified to beat McCain? Her mouth? Yeah she's a good debater, but she's also a good liar, she's not committed to the party, not submissive to authority, I almost wonder how she got this far in politics.

Strongest at top of ticket?

Ike Skelton can kiss his political aspirations goodbye in Missouri.

Strongest at top of ticket?

Hillary is a sore loser. She has never lost before, not even her husband to any of those women she called "bimbos".

And as women, we want this woman to represent us, when she has so little respect for her fellow women. Would we want any of our naive daughters to be treated the way the Clintons threw Monica Lewinsky under the bus?

Strongest at top of ticket?

Hillary is a sore loser. She has never lost before, not even her husband to any of those women she called "bimbos".

And as women, we want this woman to represent us, when she has so little respect for her fellow women. Would we want any of our naive daughters to be treated the way the Clintons threw Monica Lewinsky under the bus?

Strongest at top of ticket?

This is so funny and desperate! Know thyself! The comments about working white voters, I mean hard-working white voters, really went over the line- spoken by someone with blinders on, who has no idea how desperate she sounds. Spoken like a dictator, not a true leader! I would say, " how sad", under normal circumstances, but in this case I have to say, how stupid, and, how insulting! By the way, I'm a hard-working -older white woman-making way less than 40,000. a year who was supporting Obama before he was even running!

Strongest at top of ticket?

I am not surprised by the letter but completely disagree because I think it will be best for the democratic party that Senator Clinton NOT appear on the 'ticket' at all. She is not fully vetted. We need a VP that will work well as a team with Senator Obama and that will not give the GOP a daily free for all for attacking and keeping the media in a uproar. The Clintons on the ticket in ANY way will unify a frayed republican party. Bill and Hillary do not belong in the white house again.
We are ready for serious changes in Washington.
I really wanted to see Edwards on the ticket because I could see the two of them rolling up their sleeves and setting some serious changes in motion. He may have reasons related to his wife's health for not wanting the job. But Clinton is the last person we should have on our ticket.

CHANGE WE CAN BELIEVE IN!!!
OBAMA '08

Strongest at top of ticket?

How many of the 16 are college graduates? Just wondering, since she's the candidate of the "less well educated".
