As a Connecticut Democrat who has had the pleasure (or more recently, displeasure) of meeting Joseph Isadora Lieberman on more than one occasion, I can say that while he is a nice man, he is a bumbling fool.

His own party disowned him in a primary election, forcing him to run as an independent, simply because the republican's wouldn't take him either. Now he thinks with all his grandiose speeches in favor of McCain that he is going to woo democrats or Hillary Clinton supporters to John McCain? The party doesn't even like him, so what makes him think he can sway anyones vote.

Let me provide you with some insight as to the real reason the wall went up so you can tell your children you've learned something today.

East Germany lost too many skilled workers in those years. The East German government saw no other way to prevent those workers from their exodus to the West so they closed the border between the two on August 13, 1961... about two months after the meeting. This means plans had been in the works for a while.

The other reason is there was a big problem due to the currency exchange. The West German DM had been exchanged into the East German DM at a rate of 1:4 in West Berlin. The people with West German DM could get goods very cheaply in the Eastern part of Berlin (kind of like people in the US going to Mexico).
