Senator Obama opposed the legislation on extending the death penalty to gang-related murders because those crimes are ALREADY subject to the death penalty in Illinois.

Don't forget, he is responsible for the death penalty compromise in Illinois that keeps the death penalty in effect in the state but requires that all confessions be taped to ensure that an innocent man or woman is not coerced into confessing to a murder that sends him or her to death row.

I think if Obama is polling at 61% favorability with Jewish voters, than he doesn't have trouble with them. Jewish voters have seen the devastation that Bush's policies, and those warmongering politics of McCain, have and will bring to Israel. Israel AND the Middle East countries will do much better under an Obama administration than anything McCain can offer. Maybe McCain can fool the elderly Jewish voters but the younger generation clearly sees that the continuation of Bush politics has made Israel much less safe in the world, and those votes will go for Obama.

Although I feel for the lives lost to gang violence, this is not an election year that the average American is transfixed on issues of crime in the streets.

Being mugged by the one hose bandit at the pump, is the crime platform this year. That's a winner for the dems.

The fallacy of much of the news coverage is that because, say, Clinton did better than Obama with a certain group, that Obama is weak with that group. In the primary that's simply not always fact. By that same argument, John Edwards and Joe Biden don't do well with Democrats because Clinton and Obama did so much better in the primaries. Does anyone believe that?

Margaret, in the case of the death penalty, thats a good thing he opposed it.Putting criminals to death, does NOTHING to solve the crime problem. Using the criminal to help curve crime could prove to be a better approach.

First Read, your wording of the bill is unfair to Obama. He opposed the wording of the bill, he deemed it unconstitutional. So rather than vote Yea or Nay, he voted "present", as a voice of protest, in requesting that the bill be reworded so that it was more fairly implemented for all parties concerned.

Please correct yourself, or you will be losing a dedicated reader.

There are tons of anti-Jewish sentiment out there. Some try to use fear,ignorance and prejudice to sway votes. But you just can't believe everything you read. I'm Jewish and I've been supporting Barack Obama for years. Every Jewish person I know is supporting Obama. The choice is absolutely clear. President Barack Hussein Obama will be for ALL the people.

I've worked in the legal profession for over 30 years in Illinois. Presently, there is a stay on all executions in the state of Illinois because unfortunately, the criminal court system here was so corrupt. Innocent people, mostly African-American males, were being quickly pushed through the criminal courts and received a rubber-stamped death penalty conviction. This practice went on for years before our then-govenor and the Illinois Supreme Court did an indepth investigation of the common practice of Illinois courts "railroading" African-American males. Because of DNA testing, many, many prisoners on death row were exonerated of crimes they did not commit. The state of Illinois had to stay executions, as more than likely, many innocent people had already been executed. Obama did not vote yes or no re: death penalty for gangbangers. He voted "present." Thank God he did NOT vote "yes." Until the people of the state of Illinois are more trusting of our court system, there is a stay on any and all executions.

Perceived weakness with Jewish & Latino communities was versus Clinton not McCain.

I read one that mentioned Bush's success with latino's, but failed to mention he as Texas Gov had a huge advantage that McCain will not enjoy.

Come on First Read - We need un-bias information. Don't give bits of information to sway a story one way or another. If you speak about legislation then you need to include the entire thing. If not then give us the source so we can view it. I love you guys and you do a great job. But, sometimes you slip; we need fair reporting so we all can determine our own minds.

Lieberman is one of the most honest and respected Senators we have. No matter what party. Oh ya the dems turned there back on him too I forgot.Obama was a muslim, learned it and lied about it.
