If true, this brazenness can only lead to further attempts to suppress voter turnout. Let us hope this does not lead to other actions that impact actual votes cast. I was working a phone bank for a NY Democratic challenger. In the last three days I have heard many reports from voters saying that they had been receiving 5-10 robocalls in one day, starting with 'Let me tell you about [candidate X],' then going on to disparage him. One woman said she had supported the candidate until she got all these phone calls, but was not going to vote because she was disgusted with it. She was a registered Democrat, so they had targeted her. If she had not spoken to me, a live person who explained what was happening, she would not have bothered to vote. She called it harassment. Another gentleman, who was unaffiliated, said he had lost count of the number he had received, but was going to vote for my candidate anyway. He said he would hang up on the message, but was continuing to get calls, so I explained that he should listen to the whole thing, and the calls would stop.

Speaking of problem phone calls...

Fear and smear. It's time we get our house in order.

Speaking of problem phone calls...

Democrats are at it again. Same ol' tired tune. Election Day has barely begun and they are already claiming voter intimidation. This is why the Democrats will never be the majority party again. If they win, it must because the American people agree with them on the issues. If they lose, its because the Republicans cheated. Give me a break. Grow up Democrats and you may get even more support.

Remember 2000? Remember how the Republicans "stole" the election? Well, if they could steal a Presidential election...why wouldnt they steal this election? The Republicans will lose the House today, not because the Democrats "stole" the election but because they have not been good stewards of this nation. See how easy it is to act like a grown up, Democrats?

Speaking of problem phone calls...

I'm a registered Republican and will not be voting this term. But I also know from the past that in many cases, the candidate has no knowledge.

Additionally, I would like to say that I know George Allen and I know a great deal more about him than many people do. If the media isn't artificially suppressing the vote by forecasting election results ahead of time to suppress voter turnout, then the next best thing is to scream "Voter-Fraud" ahead of the election to try and cast doubt on the opposing party. The sad result of all this is not that your candidate wins or loses, but that the people who are supposedly being represented by the candidate placed in office get voter-apathy and simply don't show up. People once considered it their right to vote and gave their lives to support that cause. Now, it seems, most don't care. The result is less than a majority will vote, the amount of votes will be challenged b/c "A" did something that "B" doesn't approve of while doing the same thing that "A" did but screamed louder, and the next election will be more of the same. It's not surprising that republicans are resorting to dirty tricks. I'm glad Webb has run a dignified campaign. Allen is an average senator that has done nothing for the good people of Virginia. I'm from Chicago and I can assure you that Republicans are really pathetic at voter fraud compared to the Democrats, who invented it. On a radio call-in this morning, a Funeral Home Director complained of all the Democrat signs that were plastered all over his funeral home (he considered it a little tasteless). I think it makes perfect sense since dead people have always been a very strong voting block for the Democrats. Lastly, if getting an automated phone call is really enough to intimidate Democrats into not voting, do you really trust them with the security of our nation?

Speaking of problem phone calls...

Now that the parties have essentially reversed positions (Republicans are spending money like drunken sailors, engaged in nation-building, usurping personal privacy, and legislating morality while the Dems enact welfare reform, balanced budget amendments, etc.) it's interesting to note that most people haven't changed sides. Vehicle inspections in minority districts on election night on the main road to the polls, phone calls containing fear tactic propaganda. Tampering with voting machine results regardless of the technology used in the voting machine. This is the GOP's mode of operation. Its been going on like this since 2000. If it ain't broke why fix it is their motto. Get that vote in your favor whether you have to lie, cheat, threaten, confuse, throw out votes, or tamper with them. With only 1/4 or less of our population voting in elections along with intelligence level of several conservatives when it comes to believing hype, the other party could win by a 2 to 1 vote ratio and still lose the election through deceit and unlawful acts. Are we going to challenge this election if the GOP remains in total control of government? We damn well better for I'm convinced the wrong person has won elections they did not win on actual votes. You have to Stop the GOP from monopolizing control of Government, else we will continue to live in a highly polarized, skewed political agenda that will distance the wealthy from the poor even more, let alone having us all live in a Puritan ideal of morality. Both sides say what they think the public wants to hear-except John Kerry-no telling what is coming out of his mouth. Raise taxes, lower taxes blah blah blah. How can anyone be an "informed voter" when there is so much mis-information floating around-especially on the internet? The media kills me with the bias they obviously display-MSNBC vs Fox News.
How can Bill Clinton be viewed as a standout President when he was caught "not having sex" with Monica L? Then to blame the Republican party for distracting him from his real job of being President-I think that had already been done by some Cubans (cigars).
I don't believe anything either canidate has to say-they all play along party lines. To argue politics is useless-move on. If more people used common sense instead of living in some pampered la-la land where everyone should hug each other, maybe we could get somewhere. The war in Iraq is considered the deciding factor in this election-what happened to all the supporters after 9/11-how can anyone say we are not safer?-remember airports before 9/11? You can't just breeze thru now-just one example that I have experience with.
Gay marriage is also on our ballot-those two words can't really be said in the same sentence. Marriage is a union of man and woman before God. I guess if you change it to financial relationship between two people before the government, it may have a better chance.

Speaking of problem phone calls...

To all you "dyed in the wool" republicans who are defending the biggest crooks on the planet, I would like to know what your financial situations are. Medicare premiums go up every year with less coverage. This in turn raises the premium on my supplemental insurance. When I have my prescription medications refilled, guess what? they also have gone up in price. I don't know how long I will be able to afford living. As one resident of Virginia pointed out, those registered in Virginia are not registered by party so how would anyone target Democrats to discourage them or confuse them about voting? Maybe it was the Democrats trying to get people not to vote for Allen? The whole thing sounds like another bunch of whining before there is any evidence of wrongdoing. If I won the lottery or inherited millions and started my own business I would never, ever belong to anybody's chamber of commerce after this election.
The really sad thing is that most of the people I talk to in my native home state of Tennessee really do belive the repubs will cheat - again. The working class (the real working class those of us making less than 50,000 per year!)have not had US senate representation from out state in a very long time. We had a doctor who plays at being a senator (and he is not a very good doctor - I know I work in the medical field!) and an out of touch ex-governor. The republicans constantly whine about having to pay into the system. Well, let me explain it to you so you'll understand. You pay car insurance, and home owners insurance etc. year after year and get nothing in return, unless of course, you are unfortunate enough to have been in an accident, or have a fire or other disaster in your home. Social Security "should" work the same way. If you are unfortunate enought to have worked all your life in a low-paying job that has poor benefits, you should receive social security to help you get by in your old age. If on the other hand, you were fortunate enough to have a good-paying career and have ample investments that you can draw from during your retirement, good for you, but you should get nothing from social security! Therefore, "means-testing", along with removing the "Cap", is the only logical way to fix the solvency problems associated with social security. So quit whining, and pay your fair share. Who knows? Someday, it just might be YOU waiting for that meager check on the 3rd of each month!

Speaking of problem phone calls...

Republicans and their FEAR MONGERING... I am a 27 year old single female with no children, and I not only have a Masters in Information Systems, I am now working towards 2 Masters: Business Administration and Management. I work for one of the largest telecommunications companies, and have lived in more than 2 states. If $34,000 a year is supposed to be an increase, why am I struggling to keep my normal bills paid...electricity, water, gas, etc...why am I struggling and waiting on overtime to be available? Why am I applying to work a 2nd job when I make over $34000 a year? Because THAT IS NOT ENOUGH!! If that is not enough for a person who has under a lavish lifestyle, and has the normal bills..rent/mortgage, car note, electicity, etc..not 1 credit card or a shopping addiction..if I am trying to continue my career and live a normal life, not an above middle-class..why am I strugglin? If you are making minimum wage, it is the HARDEST, FRUSTRATING position to be in. If you have never been through it or close to it, you have no idea the amount of turmoil is inside of a person trying to legally make it in a country where there are millions of dollars being wasted on political campaigns, trimming government lawns,etc..how can the capital of the U.S. have more homeless people than any other city in America? Why has it become normal to just say "that is the way it is?" God did not put us here to continuously struggle and never have any content. I do not want to be rich, I just want to be able to pay my bills on time without having to twirl around a pool, or any other undesired legal or illegal ways I can get ahead...this comment was not made to offend anyone, but you should not criticize how a person feels about how hard they have to work to stay afloat while you are already coasting on half the leg work....

Speaking of problem phone calls...

It's really disgusting and sad the tactics that the Republican party will go to win elections. Nothing is sacred anymore and they call themselves the Faith based Party. Let's all stop here for a moment and think what has the Republicans done for good working Middle class citizens of this country. NOTHING!!! The minimum wage have not been raised since Clinton raised it in the 90's. But yet prices in basic living needs, Homes, Food have gone up..oh yeah that's right the middle class doesn't fit in the Republican/Bush administrations plan, just the small percentage of the rich is who Bush cares about. I think that's out an outrage, we are suppose to be the richest nation and leaders of the free World. But under Bush the poor became poorer and the divide between the Middle and Upper class has increased. There is division among the people of this country as well. This country needs a serious change it's time we elect people that will try to take us in a new direction instead of the current administration filled with Lying, Money hungry, Pedophiles that fill our Congress/Senate and DC. I just hope the rest of this country is up for change, and finally bringing our country together.

Speaking of problem phone calls...

As a Virginia voter, it's no surprise that there are already accusations of voter fraud with these telephone calls designed to mislead the voters. Go Dems!

Speaking of problem phone calls...

I hope that the Democrats will win both the House of Representatives and the Senate in this election. What's a person who wants to keep their privacy and their home a peaceful haven from election *BS* to do?

I voted for...*every* Independent on my local ballot. For once their not having huge campaign funds (funds that guarantee that if they win, they won't represent me once they get to Capitol Hill anyway), especially not funds enough to tie up my phone and answering machine was to their advantage

Speaking of problem phone calls...

Come on now people. Ofcourse this sort of thing is happening. Elections are fixed and rigged constantly, and as long as no one is punished for it why should it stop? It seeems to work well. I say blame not the people in power for what is going on (although they do share the shame) but blame yourselves. Why do we allow these things to go on? Why do we allow energy and oil companies to dominate government through compaigne contributions? Why don't we fund comapainges evenly for both sides through governement regulation in order to halt corruption? Why do we allow money to worp our politicians and corrupt our government to its highest level? The answer to all these questions is simple: because WE allow these people to continue to run democracy into the ground. WE THE PEOPLE dont question what these people say and we allow this sort of dirty campaigning. WE ELECTED THESE PEOPLE IN, AND WE CAN ELECT THEM OUT JUST AS EASILY. WE NEED CHANGE!! We need to change the fact we let these crimes go on. WE CAN STOP IT. STOP WHINING AND SEEK ACTION!!

Speaking of problem phone calls...

To Independent Voter, Shenandoah Valley, VA ~ I commend you for having the courage to vote your conviction. Unfortunately, a vote for an independent is tantamount to a wasted vote. Now, before you get mad, let me explain why I'm saying that. Until our country changes election law to allow for a multi-party system (more than just the Reps and Dems), then the independents will only act as the "spoilers" much the way Ross Perot did. It's truly ashame because independents often offer the right ideas / plans for fixing what's wrong without being unduly influenced by huge campaign donations from various corporations / constituents.

Speaking of problem phone calls...

I agree with that totally, all of you need to stop whining, get off of your computers, and go out there and start changing things, at least stop whining

Speaking of problem phone calls...

we need jus an athiest style government

Speaking of problem phone calls...

oink oink oink all these people that post theese messages are putting a bad name out for their party. they dont think about what they are saying. they are either so farfetched that its sickening. or so blatently stupid it makes them sound like a jackass. people are pigs. they are greedy by human nature. when the democrats are in power the republicans start to whine. when the republicans are in power the democrats start to whine. get a life and make up your own mind. you have the power. dont be a sheep.

Speaking of problem phone calls...

Hello, Mr. Montano. A vote for Allen is a vote for division and discrimination in Virginia. Allen has shown his true colors to the public, he has shown he can not represent the COMMONWEALTH OF VA mainly because he refuses to represent all the people that makes up this State. From hearing both Jim Webb and George Allen speak in person - Webb is principled and intelligent, while Allen is a smirking good ol'boy with very little in the way of original ideas. Please, if you're in Virginia and you're not sure who to vote for, give Jim Webb a chance. He will make us proud.

For you die-hard Republicans out there, I know it's hard to admit it, but the current administration and legislative branch have made a complete hash out of everything they've touched. I'm not a Democrat - I just try to vote for the better man (or woman). I hope that changing the balance of power will lead to some changes for the better.
