How about we end all subsidies, support and arms sales to OPEC nations? Then you'd see them start pumping, and prices would flatten out.

Isn't it ironic that Obama's feelings on a gas tax rebate are more in line with fiscal conservatives than McNeedsACane? McNeedsACane's support for a gas tax rebate is so antithetical to a free market economy that it makes him look socialist. Kudos to Obama for resisting to pander by offering gimmicks. Lasting relief is far preferable to temporary relief. Obama's comment about us getting used to high oil prices is merely his admission that we have a ton of work to do to fix this imbalance.

I was just watching 1pm segment with Andrea Mitchell and noticed that when Obama was shown in Wisconsin explaining his tax plan, the banner msnbc displayed below him was "Obama attacks McCain's tax plan." Just after that McCain was shown at an earlier appearance in Boston. The banner msnbc ran said "McCain highlights his differenences with Obama on Iraq."

A gas-tax holiday paid for by oil company windfall profits would be a short-term band-aid for rising prices. I'll take a band-aid. I am losing bookings at my resort because filling up the tank is making travelers form other states nauseous. Our economy is greatly tied to consumer confidence. If consumers felt, even for just the summer, they were getting some relief from high gas prices- it would help. Just because Hillary backed it doesn't mean obama can't.

Alright, gas prices are not going down people!

No amount of drilling new oil reserves in the US or anywhere else is going to offset the rise in Global demand. Doing those things will help oil companies make more money, but that's about it. Period.

Stability in the middle east won't help either. Face it, as far as petroleum goes we've picked the low hanging fruit and now everyone's addicted. Petroleum experts have seen this coming for a long time. It's time to swallow the bitter pill and find something sustainable to replace it. The sooner we do this the sooner we can ignore the middle east, have a more stable economy, lower CO2 emissions (if you "believe" in that), and hopefully lower energy costs.

We know how the petroleum story ends: we're gonna run out. The sooner we do something about it the less painful its going to be.

I saw an interesting interview yesterday with Ben Stein, who said that the gas prices will decrease once the US states that it is working to balance the budget. Here's why:
- Gas prices are based on the currency of the US dollar so when the dollar is valued low, anything based on the dollar will increase in price to compensate
- The dollar has been devalued based on our huge deficit and low confidence in US economics
- Announce a concrete plan to balance the budget which will in turn begin to raise confidence in the value of the dollar
- This will rally the dollar, which will, in turn raise its value and ultimately lower gas prices.

In my humble opinion, Ben Stein was making a valid point. Anyone care to comment?
