He should focus on the big picture, that's what we want him to do. Someone else needs to big his delegatee for handling the day-to-day.

Innovation--the US always used to be known for innovation. When did we cede that? He should come tell our mayor and many of our state legislators that education from birth to college needs to be a priority!

Fathers everywhere need to step up (if they are not already doing so)...parenting is a 24/7 job, women can't do it alone...the children need fathers and mothers.

I raised them on my own. The courts could not get child support because he kept moving and changing jobs. And just to let you know, he is a white man!!!!

I respect Mr. Obama for speaking on the issues that most politicians avoid - race, parenting, etc. He's honest - which, believe me, is really refreshing to be spoken to truthfully as an adult - especially after the bush admin. Now, folks like Becky, Ky who are looking for something to rant about, who are apparently a little bitter for one reason or another will claim that he's only speaking to the black community, but I didn't see it that way. His message is all encompassing.

I don't get why you, Becky, think that Obama was only speaking about black fathers. Yes, his father who abandoned him was black and so, in speaking from his own experience, he was highlighting that personal fact. But fathers not being around is a universal problem. Clearly Obama was not just speaking to black men, why would you even think that?

I am sure that Obama knows the African American race isn't the only group of people who suffer from absent fathers. He also knows that black mothers aren't the only ones who struggle since it was his white mother who struggled to raise him after his father left. Keep in mind that his audience inside the church was black and that black families suffer a lot from single-parent households. This isn't something to be proud of.

I will also add that I am sorry you and your children have to struggle because their father is running from his responsibilities. This situation isn't color blind. I am certain that Senator Obama can sympathize with your situation. But please don't take it personal or as a slight because he didn't mention every race that is affected by this. He is a very inclusive person.

It's funny because he catches heat from the Black Community when he doesn't speak out on every issue or attend every function we have. At times he isn't 'black' enough. Then he comes under fire when he is too attentive to the black community and not universal enough. Then he gets in trouble from the Hispanic Community for not courting them enough or offering solutions for that community.....and on and on to Jewish American and Arab Americans. I don't envy his task to President of all Americans, but I know he is up to the task!

Vote for Obama in November.

Senator Obama chose to address the black community on this issue because single parenting is an epidemic among the African American community. Look at this article:

Senator Obama has consistently shown that the African American community must help itself if it is to succeed. In other words, he is letting them know that it is not the government's responsibility to fix what is wrong. That must start at home.

There are a number of things that can be done to help improve jobs in the country. Obama has hit the nail on the head with many of the suggestions. The Father's day speech and the idea that there be education to high school is good. We need the idea of someone being smart to perminate all segments of the country. There are too many songs and people who show that being uneducated and crude are the ways to go. Parents should be smart to show the need for education goes on all the time.

Becky, in KY, I'm a 54 yr-old african-american SINGLE female parent; I can absolutely empathize with what you are going through. I'm going to attempt to elaborate on your perception of Sen. Obamas' comments. Relative to the parental struggles, Sen. Obama didn't mean to leave out any particular group of people and he always included by indicating, "ALL", but, it was specifically important to address the problem in the black community, because, percentage wise, the numbers of "missing" fathers & single-moms, is so much greater in the black community and that is a fact. Believe, he gets it! He gets the hardships that so many of us (whites & blacks) are having to deal with. Remember, Baracks' mom was caucasian, so, he "gets it", o.k. She had to depend on food stamps to feed him and luckily, she had the help of her parents to raise & nurture her children; my grandparents were in just as much a need as my mom was, so, they were of no help to my mom. I can speak from experience; although, my dad was in our home, he was a terrible husband & father.; my dad only worked to make just enough money to feed his alcoholic addiction. It's even worse when you have to contend with physical abuse and a mom having to work 2 & 3 jobs just to try & make ends meet to feed, clothe & house 5-children, alone! So, please, with all due respect, don't take it personal about his addressing the black community specifically. You must think about it this way; under nomal economic conditions, black men have more difficulty finding employment and even if they do, they are probably not being paid the same as their white co-worker. Sadly, the economic hardship takes a more desperate toll on the lower & african-american communities. This is all about "cause & effect". A great deal of the every day crime is more affecting the african-american communities than any other; why, because, being black automatically defines you as a 2nd-class citizen; black success stories remain far & between. We still struggle with having the same educational background, but still having to work twice as hard to be lucky enough to land the ideal job. Being white still allows you the opportunity to feel hopeful, but, with a lot of black men & women, we see NO hope and unfortunately, we turn to crime (drugs, burglary, assult, etc.) in order to try & make ends meet. It's a complex matter that will take extremely complex solutions; how do we reach so many lost souls. So, like he said in his fathers day speech, we must learn to be more EMPATHETIC. Becky, you are my white-sister; we are in this struggle together; I will pray for you as well as for myself. BARACK OBAMA '08/'12!

I think it was great! He is not talking about all black farthers but if you are black you know he is telling the truth so why be upset he is trying to help not hurt. I'm a black woman and a single mom I do ok but I was raised by both parents. My dad was the best and he still is he is a good man, so of course that doesnt apply to all. We got upset with Bill Cosby because his approach was all wrong. lol he was just down right insulting. lol Go Obama he has my vote!
