I'm a Democrat and I would not be angered if Obama picked Hegal, I'd be thrilled. Sen. Hegal is the only politician I've ever heard who makes any sense talking about Iraq. I understand he's a Republican, and I probably wouldn't like some of his positions, but I like the man, he's smart, articulate, practical and ethical. I trust him. If Obama likes him, I say, go for it. Choose Hegal.

Salon’s Madden writes that Chuck Hagel may be “a long shot for the job,” with interest in him “less a question of electoral math than of political metaphysics. Running with a Republican would reinforce the message that Obama is serious about changing the way things are done in Washington.” But “unless a Republican running mate would virtually guarantee Obama a win in November, it's probably not worth the risk of angering Democrats to pick one.”

So many good choices for Obama to pick from for VP. I still think that a conservative white man with great military experience will be the best choice as the repugnant ones will try to turn the story to national security where they think they have an advantage. Considering how poorly the repugnant ones have been at protecting our national sercurity issues it's a wonder they still have any cred on national security.

I think Hillary has already told Obama that she does not want to be VP because she'd have to support his policies, especially on health care, and would have to release Bill's donors. The hiring of Patti Solis Doyle might mean the VP will be a woman - Kathleen Sebelius. I think the decision has already been made.

I think the choice of a Republican running mate in general would lend added credibility to Obama's change message. I, for one, would be over the moon if Colin Powell would agree to run!!! Why stop with a Republican VP choice...why not commit NOW to selection of a bipartisan Cabinet, to drive cooperation and change? But I digress...

It should go without saying that the choice would need to be VERY CAREFULLY THOUGHT THROUGH...the "wrong Republican" could effectively torpedo prospects for November...but the "right Republican" could put a great deal of pressure on McCain and his choice for VP running mate.

Wonder how well a Republican VP running mate for Obama would be accepted at the Dem Ntl convention?

Obama would be foolish to pick Jim Webb as tempting as that might be. His history with his choice of words on women is questionable in many women's eyes. I, as a woman myself, would not have a problem with it. But I was never a Hillary supporter. THEY I think would see it as another slight.

Tim Kaine would be a wonderful VP candidate. I'm very impressed when I see Obama and Kaine together. It just seems like they have "synergy". Tim Kaine has roots in the midwest (Minnesota and Missouri) before moving to his wife's home state of Virginia. Tim and his wife worked on behalf of poor people in Richmond before getting into politics. I remember Tim Kaine being very impressive on the national stage during the VA Tech tragedy and he has also given the Democratic response to the State of the Union. He has a great record as Governor in Virginia -- especially on transportation, education and environmental issues. Tim is catholic and I also think he's pro-life. I'm not sure how that issue would play out. Kaine also developed the "Project Exile" program which has the support of the NRA AND gun opponents (quite an unusal coalition!). The program puts repeat offenders of gun laws into federal prison instead of state and local prisons. Tim and Ann Kaine have the same educational backgrounds as Michelle and Barack Obama.

I think ultimately, it will come down to the economy. If that is the case, I would re-look at Edwards. Biden has always been my first choice, and I think he would be an excellent counterpoint to Obama's vision, youth and inexperience. I don't think Hagel would be as disruptive as believed, although there are a wealth of good Democrats to choose from, so it would be a shame. Webb is fine, although again, I would prefer Biden and Edwards, and if the economy does become the central issue I think it will be, his appeal fades-he is also a first term senator..

I agree! I would like Sebelius, she is loyal and smart woman who would be effective in bring the best out of every woman and girl in this country. She has political savvy and knows the game.

Richards would be great, but I don't think America is ready for both a Black man and Latino man in the white house, I would and as a Latino be very proud of our Country for being open minded, but being realistic it might cause more harm to the ticket than good, but he will play a big role in the administration, guaranteed.

Biden, would be the wise move on National Security, enough said.

Hagel, would be a nice pick, and would prove that we are moving into better politics.
