I'm a strong Obama supporter and have been adamantly against this tragic war from the beginning, but I really don't like this ad. MoveOn consistenly misreads where the public is and "jumps the shark" so to speak. I get that same icky feeling as with the "Patreus Betray Us" ad. There are so many strong, substantive arguments to be made against McCain's terrible Iraq policies that would sway many Americans. Using a little baby as a prop and rehashing the "100 years" comment won't do it. Get ready for another backlash even though MoveOn is on the right side of the argument.

How is it taken out of context? McCain is talking about having a military presence in Iraq indefinitely. He tries to justify it by citing our continued presence in places like Korea and Germany, but it's fallacious logic because Iraq is NOTHING like those two nations. Unlike Korea and Germany, our conflict in Iraq is NOT with their government - it is with a group of rebels and terrorists that does not abide by any treaties and is fueled by their fundamentalist hatred of Americans. This means continued attacks on our forces and more dead soldiers. And no matter how many times you declare "Mission Accomplished" that's not going to change. Moreover, WE CAN'T AFFORD IT!!! It's costing us BILLIONS, and we desperately need that money to be infused back into our own economy.

It's NOT taken out of context - his position on this is flawed as is.

In fact Obama has asked that the independent groups not run such ads. Also the McCain phrase was not distorted. The ad talks about staying in Iraq and does not mention fighting or dying in Iraq. McCain's clarification said that it was OK to stay in Iraq indefinitely as long as the troops weren't dying. Please don't distort.

The phrase the Senator used is indicative of his views to stay the course no matter how long it takes...which, in many minds, presents a grim and disturbing account under any scenario. But to take it out of context, undercuts the intelligence of the independants and disenfranchised republicans they seek (and if this IS the case, the ad appeals to the LCD and, ultimately, creates a more divisive atmosphere). I'm sure there is a better way to appeal to those that will vote in November.

Having a longterm presence in Iraq also continues to cripple the economy as millions of dollars is spent there. Additionally, in what world does McCain really believe that a day would come when American soldiers are not being killed in Iraq? So you fight and keep getting killed until that day comes, then you continue to stay. As an Obama supporter, the ad is embarrassing and the self-righteousness of it is nauseating. It plays to every stereotype out there of Obama supporters being soft little mommies who would never let their babies go off to fight (even if the fight was necessary). Worse, it plays again on a stupid turn of a phrase that McCain spit out, giving it gravity it didn't ask for and doesn't deserve.

The "100 years" phrase CAN be used to define him - as a guy who is incapable of disciplining himself to act like a mature man rather than an irascible jerk. Senator Maverick has plenty of actual biographical baggage to use in painting his complete picture to an American public who doesn't really know the reality of him. They know that he spent 5 years in the Hanoi Hilton, but might not know that he also graduated 894th out of 899 at Annapolis, and would have been kicked out if his father hadn't been an admiral. You can show video of him saying he wants cap and trade policies, then saying 'but the cap shoudn't be mandatory' (uh...."caps" are, by definition, mandatory). You can show him saying the Bush tax cuts were stupid 7 years ago, then show him now saying they're great. Actual substantial and substantiated examples that tell voters something about who he is.

But putting precious little mommy with her precious little tot and smugly informing a potential president that he can't have her baby is not going to persuade anyone, and has more potential to damage the candidate they DO support than harm the one they don't.

No more staged pleading to the camera, please. Stick to the facts and act like grownups.

So, if, hypothetically, Obama said something to this effect, "There have been vicious e-mails circulating that say I am a Muslim," would it be OK for some independent group to run an ad saying, Barack Obama said, "I am a Muslim"? It's not distorting his words, it's what he actually said. The ad would clearly be misleading, and if the whole quote was used, it would show what Obama truly meant. I have no problem with the argument that MSierra presents above. If you have a problem with the whole quote, that's fine, go after that. But to take a sentence fragment and make it seem as though John McCain wants 100 years of fighting is misleading at best. As for MoveOn not being associated with the Obama campaign that is certainly technically true. It is certainly a fine line though. And I assume that no one will be blaming McCain if some independent ads come out against Obama that are misleading.
