FIRST READ: you've had some calls this a.m. to list your policies re: postings, rules, etc. That would be interesting. The main problem, though, which has been complained about over and over on this blog is that the posts are not updated quickly. It is frustrating, regardless of your position, to take time to post and then they never show up. Perhaps, it would be helpful if you stated a post close time so people won't keep adding things that are never going to be shared with others.

I think it's telling that McCain cannot respond to criticism while on stage. He certainly brought out no new facts or compelling proof that his course was the right one. When he has a "town hall" he is surrounded by supporters!

All this does is show that Obama needs to get on that stage with this man and let the American people see them spar over policy.

We need to do this the right way, not the easy way. Lets work on getting hydro, wind, and solar power rolling....Algae bio fuels, and fuel cell technology.

We have a whole area in the southwest called death valley that would be great for generating solar power.

I got an idea, why don't they pass a bill in congress that requires that all goverment vehicles (like those huge SUV's they use for presidental motorcades) be hybrid or fuel cell driven? What about our Buses? Vancouver has electric/fuel cell buses right now...and it's wonderful.

Spend the billions here, on us.

Love it when McCain starts off with "My Friend". When I think about it, it seems that we should have been having these discussions 8 years ago. If, 8 years ago we were working to solve these issues, we would have some programs in place and other solutions about to go on line. Instead we initiated a war with Iraq, squndered millions of dollars in guns, only to let the butter sit on the table to melt. (guns vs butter) Now we are in economic trouble with regard to housing and energy. Straight talk is that we will be saddled with these issues for several years to come. The next POTUS will face more issues, domestic and abroad, than anytime in the past. We will need a young, energetic, very intelligent leader who deal with these issues.

*Oil and gas companies have shown that they cannot keep pace with the rate of drilling permits (so opening the Gulf and ANWR would help how, exactly?)

*Although permits have gone up, the price of gas has ALSO gone up, refuting the idea that more drilling will automatically reduce prices

*The Bureau of Land Management has issued 28,776 permits to drill on public land; yet, only 18,954 wells were actually drilled (a difference of 9822)

*Of the 47.5 million acres of on-shore federal lands that are currently being leased by oil and gas companies, only about 13 million acres are actually in production

I'm getting so sick of hearing about France when talking about nuclear power. France is roughly the size of TEXAS. You simply can't compare. For the US to get 80% of our power from nuclear we'd have to build 700 NEW reactor sites. We'd need 3 "Yucca Mountain" dump sites.

Oh... and there simply isn't the Uranium out there for that many sites. And lets not forget about the horrible environmental damage that occurs mining Uranium. Or the serious security issues that we'd be facing trying to protect 700+ nuclear facilities.

Geothermal, solar, biomass, and wind are the way to go.

Drilling technology can now allow us to put a geothermal plant anywhere in the country. The temperature 4 miles down is 600°F anywhere in the country. Water is pumped down one shaft and returns as high pressure steam out the other. It's already being done in California in an operational power plant.

New solar polymers have been created that drastically increase the output of panels at a far lower cost. They are near full scale production.

There are numerous wind turbines available, including a new design that can be used on the tops of buildings in cities where conventional windmills won't work. They are helical in design and can turn no matter which direction the wind blows, even if its swirling (which hurts normal windmills).

Biomass... tons of options. There are now facilities that are using algae to create hydrogen by adjusting the photosynthesis process (to emit hydrogen instead of oxygen), using a form of yeast to break down organic waste into petroleum (yes, the bacterea excrete petroleum), and a high temperature hydrolysis process that can turn various types of organic waste and even plastics into petroleum, methane, and other fuel components.

It's all out there... it just needs to be pushed to a national agenda.

In regards to this article...I STILL say that we are smart enough in this country to do both - solve our energy issues without destroying the planet. Why does it have to be one or the other?

My question is why does it take 15-20 years (last I heard) to set up a drilling operation? Also, why am I not hearing about North Dakota? Didn't they just find an oil supply there?

I admit I only caught part of McCain's speech but what I saw was very disconcerting. I was stunned at the level of unpreparedness/unprofessionalism. I fully expect any speaker to occasionally refer to notes or cue cards, but he was staring down at the speech reading directly from it, only occasionally looking up and out at the audience! I can't believe I haven't heard anyone else mentioning this. I expect to see more from college students presenting an honors thesis and this man is running for president of our country? Very worried in MA.

--The Democratic posters here can bluster all they wish, but this is the character of the person of whom they are running against. They need to understand his strengths in addition to deriding his weaknesses.

It seems low-class to me for this Feeney character to voice his opinion in a matter to make such a scene. John McCain seems more than happy to listen to someone's or a panelist's/advisor's concerns in private. Doing so publicly seems over-the-top, but that's merely my opinion.

--I really don't think that the majority of people are 'for the environment' to the degree that it adversely affects their pocketbooks. If the liberals think their arguments will fly, they don't have a pulse on the American people (no wonder they lose).

I tend to be much more pessimistic about our development of alternative energy sources that will separate us from oil dependence (I'm still waiting for that flying car). Yes, we may be hurting a little now, but it's nothing compared to the pain we will feel in the future. I think that not drilling is an investment in helping our country withstand the greater economic hurtle/pain in the future when the world's supply finally begins to wind down. Investing in our future national security is well-worth it, and I've not doubt that we will get past this minor turbulence.

I don't care how much sense your(Demo's) plan makes when it comes to energy, I refuse to let the facts get in the way of my opinion. Quit tellin' me that out of all of the offshore areas that oil companies are allowed to drill, only 10% is being utilized(ie, oil companies are not working to capacity), we should allow them more water rights so they have more space not to drill.
