Lindner Jr., the billionaire Cincinnati businessman, was CEO of Chiquita Brands International from 1984 to 2001, and remained on the company's board of directors until May 2002. Beginning under his tenure, Chiquita executives paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to the United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia (known by the Spanish acronym AUC), which is described by George Washington University's National Security Archive as an ‘illegal right-wing anti-guerrilla group tied to many of the country's most notorious civilian massacres.’”

I think First read needs to get into this and and put ist up as a header. Why would you burry a story like this that far, and even report it like it's just a minor story. You guys are supposed to be the best, and surely this is not your A game. I know you are better than that.... What has happened to journalism in this country. What added value does this piece bring. Are we talking about Cindy McCain's spending because they have called Obama an elitist or because given Cindy's vast wealth and privilege, including her ability to negotiate a sweetheart deal with authorities when she ran into trouble with the law, that she lacked authenticity when she twisted Mrs Obama's words and then attacked her. Then by all means MSNBC say so. This way we can say the empire (Mccains) are not wearing any clothes when they use these type of wedge issues in the campaign.
MSNBC then can help move the discussion to more substantiative issues. After all the mainstream media should feel a heightened obligation to do so. Their behavior during the run-up to war bordered on criminal. This election is too important.

This reminds me of how we were supposed to feel bad for Ken Lay when he had to sell one of his properties in Aspen to pay for ongoing legal troubles.

Cindy McCain's vast fortunes have little to do with McCain's ability to be President, but they do create some difficulties for a candidate who is purportedly interested in transparency and campaign finance reform.

They also raise the question of whether McCain understands any longer what it is like to be an average American. The other day McCain couldn't recall the last time he pumped his own gas or what he paid for it.

Can someone who can buy a house on his AmEx card sympathize with those who are struggling to pay their mortgage? Can someone who has been chauffeured everywhere for thirty years understand the pain of high gas prices? Can someone who has been wined and dined by lobbyists grasp the rise in food prices?

It's virtually impossible to tell where he stands on the issues these days - he has flipped positions on virtually every issue to secure the gop nomination. It appears that he also sacraficed his principles and convictions along the way. He should lay off the screaming at every cloud and focus on the issues. He's his own worst enemy at this point. If he runs his campaign this poorly, I can't even begin to imagaine how poorly he'd do as president.
