I think McCain's 60s argument does indeed "play right into Obama's wheelshouse". People don't want more of the same - they want change. And, contrary to what the ad is saying, hope is a GOOD thing - not something that is pie-in-the-sky and will never come to fruition.

First his comaparison of Obama to Jimmy Carter and now this. Why is he trying to reinforce the fact the he is "OLD".

He references Steve Forbes yesterday, a candidate of the 80's. He is approaching hiss campaign as if it were 1980. His vision of America is tied to a time when the world was a very different and simpler place.

The flower people are long gone. We Viet Nam vets are now 60 years old or rapidly approaching 60. The baby boomers are going to retire in the next 5 to 7 years or so.

The ad is clever, and no one seeks to deny McCain's patriotism or sacrifice.

But I think the McCain campaign is making a fundamental mistake here, just as the Clinton campaign did. Obama's use of the concept of Hope is not a call to idealistic reverie -- it is a call to action. In Barack Obama's hope rhetoric, he recognizes that the participation of America's citizenry is vital to making widespread change a reality. 'Hope' and 'Change' are calls to activism and personal responsibility.

The Obama campaign seems to take the goal of having a government "by the people" and "for the people" very seriously. John McCain, by contrast, seems to value corporations more than individuals in almost every aspect of policy. I am not interested in what he has been doing for the last 20 years -- I am paying attention to the plan he is laying out for the future. And I don't think I am alone in that. I mean, the man just barely admits, ("I imagine") we are in a recession!

You can package up John McCain however you like, but in the end, he's still just John McCain.

There was a program on over the 4th of July weekend on PBS about the year 1967 - two stories. One was about the first anti-war demonstration at a college in Wisconsin. Dow Chemical was coming to the college to recruit students.

Well, the students didnt want Dow Chemical there - it was they who were manufacturing the napalm that was used in Vietnam. The pictures they were seeing were similar to the pictures taken of people in Japan after we dropped the Atomic Bomb.

The Dean of the College called in the police and of course started billy clubbing the students.

These students had a conscience. And they put everything on the line because they were afraid that if they demonstrated, they would be thrown out of school - which left them the possibility of being drafted. They demonstrated anyway. Good for them.

The other story was about how our government lied and lied and lied (Westmoreland) about an ambush that killed an awful lot of very young American kids in Vietnam in one day.

Very sad program to watch.

The carrier was in the Gulf of Tonkin on July 29, its crew preparing for the second launch of the fifth day of striking enemy targets in North Vietnam, when one of its own bombs detonated on deck. McCain narrowly escaped the resulting conflagration that killed 132 crewmen, with two others missing and presumed dead, and injured 62 more. It was one of the worst military accidents of the war. What this does not say is that the missil from john McCain’s plane is what caused the explosion. In a history channel piece on john Mccain the video shown the missel shooting off john McCain’s plane.
