Sen. Obama should hit the Maverick daily on his blatant gas-tax holiday pander and offshore drilling propositions. Sen. McCain would actually have to show up to work to even get the holiday pander en route but even Darth Cheney didn't like the idea (along with every reasonable economist) so that legislation would be DOA. I love how many conservatives parrot the Heritage Foundation's talking points with regards to oil drilling. McCain has already admitted that offshore drilling would only give American's a "psychological" boost. This "mental" line of reasoning when dealing with the economy and energy policy has become a staple of his philosophy.

In more pressing news, it has been learned that the Iranian missile test firings were fake. I sure hope that Mr. Bush isn't trying to pull a quick Gulf of Tonkin on us.

I believe that Obama is vunerable on energy.

He proposed a new energy policy, including support for research and development into alternative fuels and raising fuel efficiency standards. He has stated that the price of a barrel of oil is “one of the most dangerous weapons in the world". Further he has said we need to "end the tyranny of oil”.

Not once did he explain how! What are the specific proposals that will lead to this goal? What short-term solutions do you have to relieve the pain at the pump? We need something to fill the gap between the development of alternative fuel sources and the problems of today. Something like modernizing existing refineries to increase capacity and supply and building new refineries.

In this case, I want to hear the specifics and not the rhetoric.

Renewable fuels like celluosic biodiesel (trash into fuel), solar (MIT is in the news today for working on exsisting methods for making solar extremely affordable) and wind power (no lack of that in washington)

Barack has the plan that will kill two birds with one stone. Getting us off the "fossil fuel" dragon, and limiting the funds that go to radical extremist countries through the sale of oil.

The fact that Congress and past Presdients for over the last 30 years have not done enough to properly fund, support and encourage research into alternate fuels and energy, and the fact that McCain has been part of that club for 26 of those years is enough said. If a "1 term" Senator undertands the need to get serious about alternate fuels and energy versus McCain taking 26 years years in the Senate to realize the same (if he has realized the same) tells me that the "1 term Senator" is much more qualified to be President then someone who has had 26 years to solve these problems but has done nothing. OPEC is holding the world at ransom and past and present leaders failed to recognize the precarious positions they put their countries in by lack of foresight and the naïve belief the commodity would have always been affordable. Let us not fool ourselves; the war in Iraq is all about oil and that warmonger Bush is itching to attack Iran before he demits office. In all fairness I don’t think Iran is the aggressor. Their nuclear launches were more a show of defense, to the point they actually falsify a launch in a misguided effort of showing their ability to protect themselves. Obama's proposal (and it is a serious one) to raise fuel efficiency standards is a good specific proposal. Why? It will force auto-makers and other entrepenuers to begin more serious and legitimate research and creation of alternate fuels and energies for transportation purposes. Until now the auto-makers have been lazy by only slightly increasing gas mileage in new cars when for years they have had the knowledge to build an afforable other fueled vehicle. Other individual invetors have had such knowledge as well but have been criticized and ostracized by the auto-makers who have stubbornly refused to change the direction of their industry. Raising fuel standards will also force the asuto-makers and hopefully new competitors to begin seriously developing beter and more efficient mass-transit transportation systems as mono-rails, etc. The expertise and knowledge is out their. Obama is not a scientist. But he understands that the Presdeiint along withthe support of the people has to take the steps necessary to force the energy geniuses in this country to get with it, drop the dependence on oil and get their butts in gear developing what they already know how to develop. Wil there be some pain i nthe transition. Of course. But in the long run the U.S. will be able to kiss their dependence on oil goodbye. It is up to the President to encourage and enforce this transition through positive leadership and that is what Obama is proposing to do. He just needs the support of the people behind him.

My understanding is that the Oil Companies have rights to 88 mil US acres they can drill as of today but they are either not drilling or apparently have given up on drilling there, because it's apparently not profitable in the near future to explore there.

My questions is that how did they obtain this much land, and how was that land picked to be allocated to them. In addition, is this land sold or leased to the Oil Companies at discounted rates? It would only make sense that the Oil Companies and/or some supposedly educated people in that field had some say into this.
Given that assumption, why do these same people think that we ought to allow them to take possession of more land with no guarantees of drilling? Plus if it were come to pass that they obtained these new lands they desire, i.e. Alaska or off shore drilling in ANWR for the purpose of drilling, would they be willing to give up the 88 mil acres they currently have, and which they insist do not have drilling capacities, or do they want to hoard all this land for future personal use?

John McCain has a good track record of opposing alternative energy. Now that he is running for president for his third time (since he is superstitious and carries lucky items,maybe he believes this run is charmed)Mr. McCain is supporting development of non-oil fuels. Makes sense, he has flip flopped on 61 policy stands so far this election season including accepting general funding.
I really want to hear more from the candidates, especially Obama about their plans to improve our energy supply. And please, no more corn ethanol! It's just a boondoggle for farmers and raises everyone's food costs. Alternative fuels like algae or those that use the whole plant make far more sense. Wouldn't it rock to send the hundreds of billions in oil money we send overseas each year to our own country?
