McCain was caught on video squirming and wriggling in his chair trying to get away from a question on his voting record on health insurance for birth control. He babbled and equivocated over his deplorable Senate record on veterans' benefits when challenged by a Vietnam vet in a town-hall meeting. He made a despicable joke about killing Iranians. And finally, his top economic adviser accused America of being a "nation of whiners."

If all that had happened to Obama rather than McCain, it wouldn't just be the Republicans calling it a total disaster; the corporate media would be doing it for them, and probably for weeks on end.

McCain has had major blunders this week but don't let anybody tell that SS can survive in current form. It's going to run out around 2017 when the money going out is more than the taxes coming in. There is no interest that will keep it going to 2041 because the interest is paid by the government (taxes). Any increase now is not the solution as the increase in revenue will be used to pay for current expenditures - no lockbox. Benefits will be cut as taxes cannot pay for this and medicare. Sad to say we'll all be working longer because we're living longer and having fewer children. Nobodies fault just a fact of life.

Why hasn't the press given any attention to the International Red Cross report on torture of US held detainees.

It is now official, we have become a nation that not only condones the torture of detainees to extract confessions, we practice it. Coerced confessions, obtained by torturing detainees, will be used in U.S. military tribunals to be held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba (GITMO).

Did you know that Red Cross investigators concluded last year in a secret report that the Central Intelligence Agency’s interrogation methods for high-level Qaeda prisoners constituted torture and could make the Bush administration officials who approved them guilty of war crimes?

The International Committee of the Red Cross declared in the report, given to the C.I.A. last year, that the methods used on Abu Zubaydah, the first major Qaeda figure the United States captured, were “categorically” torture, which is illegal under both American and international law.

We know that similar techniques including water boarding and electric shock were used on other GITMO detainees. We know men were held at GITMO without the right of habeas corpus, some for over 5 years. Since the Supreme Court ruling declaring that these detainees have the right to know why they are being held, at least 5 detainees have been released, no trial. Held captive for 5 years without explanation and released without explanation. These men were, in effect, held hostage.

We are outraged when extremists groups like FARC hold people hostage for years but are not outraged when our government practices the identical policy.

During the Viet Nam and the First Persian Gulf War, when our men were being systematically tortured to obtain war crime confessions we called these nations uncivilized, brutal and demanded that the world treat their activities as violations of international law regarding the treatment of prisoners of war. Under current U.S. policy, those coerced confessions made by U.S. POW’s would be legal. John McCain would be a war criminal, having confessed to bombing civilian targets.

It has been established that the type of torture to be allowed was discussed and approved by the White House. It has been claimed that both the President and Vice-President signed off on the torture. Imagine Presidential discussions on the torture methods to be employed. We also know the members of the FBI requested that they be removed form the interrogation process as they did not want to be involved in an unlawful act. The CIA had no such reservations.

In order to circumvent the laws of the U.S., we have allowed prisoners to be sent to other, less civilized, countries for “questioning”. The methods of torture we employed were not severe enough. We needed more painful, violent methods used to extract information and confessions. Please tell me again how any of this is legal?

President Bush has established an imperial Presidency. He feels he is above the law. To our shame, this Congress has either granted him immunity for his criminal acts or just simply chosen to ignore them. At a minimum these allegations should be investigated and if a prima fascia case can be made, we should prosecute these individuals to the fullest extent of the law. The President is a citizen and his elected position does not place him above the Rule of Law, a lesson we learned from the administration of Richard Nixon.

We, collectively, have allowed lies and fear-mongering to cloud our judgment. The rule of law need not always be our guide, only when it’s convenient. We have seen this before in the 1930’s and 40’s. Bypass some laws for the good of the state. Take away individual rights for the good of the state. Imprison people for the good of the state. Murder people for the good of the state. Abrogate our rights and liberties for the good of the state.

Bring the criminals who authorized these atrocities to trial for the good of the state.

Need to Know - where have you been? Barack is NOT raising taxes!!! That is a lie from the McCain campaign. Obama would let the tax cuts expire only on those already making very high salaries. Obama wants to LOWER taxes on the middle class and working class. In fact, they would receive three times more in tax credits than they would from McCain's plan. This will help "stoke" the economy and lead to more growth.
