If you look at the artist past covers (ie bush being a servent of Chaney, and the white house in sess pull) the artist takes a TRUTH and goes over the Top with it.

There is no TRUTH in this cartoon.

Lastly and sadly if you HAVE TO EXPLAIN your "satire", then it is by definition a BAD call by the New Yorker.

Problem here is the cover distracts from a favorable Obama story. It can't be helpful to the Senator when the cover of a national magazine portrays him as a muslim and his wife as a terrorist. Amidst all the internet myths floating around, this cover just reinforces them, particularly for low information voters.

It turned a favorable story into a nighmare and reinforces false sterotypes of the candidate.

what do low info voters do most....read entire articles are just look at pictures? This gives a whole new meaning to the phrase " A picture represents a 1000 words..." This cover is dispicable and legitimizes the rumors regarding Mr and Mrs. Obama...I have experienced quite a bit of irresponsible journalism from the capable companies...but the cover of the NewYorker beats them all...it promotes fear, stereotypes and racism. I'd suggest those who care to email a note toe the editor of The NEWYORKER "Denouncing and Rejecting" such propraganda! The articles maybe insightful, but your typical Joe/jane passing the newsstand will just see the picture!!! This is the epitome of yellow journalism

Senator McCain's reaction to Phil Gramm's remarks about the economy was that Phil Gramm does not speak for me. I recall during many of Senator McCain's town hall gatherings when a question was asked about the economy, Senator McCain would immediately tutn the mike over to Phil Gramm. Phil Gramm is McCain's economic adviser but now Gramm does not speak for him. Sounds like flip floppoing to me.

Are they so out-of-touch with mainstream Americans that they don't understand how easily their fears are roused about those they percieve as 'different' or 'exotic' (read: BLACK)? I was shocked by the new cover of ‘The New Yorker‘. It depicts the Obamas standing in the Oval office fist bumping, as machine gun toting terrorists, with Barack in a turban dressed like an Islamo fascist, and Michelle with a huge Angela Davis type afro, and wearing army boots, with a picture of Bin Laden on the wall, and the American flag burning in the fire place.

My mouth dropped. My heart broke.

The magazine is defending the cover as political satire. Scarborough thinks it’s funny. Mika, and Barnacle don’t. I find it nakedly malicious.

True satire is stretching an envelope in which resides the spirit of truth. This, as Mrs. Obama has rightly said, is mean.

It will backfire. People will show their solidarity with Barack's campaign, and stop buying the magazine. It’s circulation will go down.

Some voters who are not yet Obama supporters, will be offended, and this will be the catalyst that pushes them into his column.

I'm an Obama supporter and I think the New Yorker cover is funny. I guess it's because I've been dealing with all those crazy e-mails from my Aunt Marge about how Obama is a Muslim terrorist from Africa. And his wife is black too! (Oh no!)

Anyway, irony and satire aside, I am anxious to read the articles. Obama is, of course, a politician. And apparently a much better one than we've seen in many, many years. He beat the Clintons after all. And he believes in the amazing idea of COMPROMISE. Imagine that - the basic principal upon which our Constitution was created and actually works as a process greater than any political ideology. As Obama has said - What unites us is greater than that which divides us. Let's unite, people! From the Right and the Left let's find that wonderful Center where we can respect each other and move forward preserving our Union and our rights as citizens in this great Nation.

I turned Morning Joe off some months ago. Joe treats Mika terribly--she has a brain, and she's a good journalist, but Joe treats her like she's an airhead. Ugh.

As for the New Yorker, the cover was in very poor taste because there are voters who will believe it to be true--they won't understand it's a joke.

As for Obama being a politician, I've learned that he is, to my disappointment. I prefer his positions more so than McCain's, but when Obama caved on FISA, he was no longer a candidate who could bring change we could believe in. I still think he will elevate policy discussions in America and elevate our standing around the world though.

As unfortunate this cover is, it is protected by our constitutional right. And being cloaked under the thin veil of "satire" it's not covered by "Slander or Libel" litigation.

We as Americans have the right to made our voices heard. I would love to see people protesting outside the establishment that houses the New Yorker in a peaceful demonstration. We also have the choice to not buy the magazine, or any future magazines in protest.

We may not like it, but this is our right... and Obama will protect this magazines right to be circulated even though it paints the worst possible picture. Why? Because he is an american that has consistantly fought for us. All of us...

The Cover of the New York Times depicts exactly what's lacking in American journialism today. Honesty and integrity. (He's the author that had the best-seller Helter Skelter on the Charles Manson murders) Apparetnly it's a book about how Bush should be held accountable for the over 4,000 muders of American young people in Iraq. I bring this up because not ONE news station in America will promote his book on TV. He's gotten most of his promotion via the internet and word of mouth. American media is RIGHT wing and will NOT promote something "less than flattering" about Bush or any of the Republican cronies. This is also why McFossil get a pass from the media. I was STILL seeing Jackson video over the weekend, but NOT ONCE did I see the video of Phil Gramm saying we were a "nation of whiners". But you can sure "scare" white people with video's of Jackson, can't you?
