The Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLBA) allowed commercial and investment banks to consolidate. For example, Citibank merged with Travelers Group, an insurance company, and in 1997 formed the conglomerate Citigroup, a corporation combining banking and insurance underwriting services. Other major mergers in the financial sector had already taken place such as the Smith-Barney, Shearson, Primerica and Travelers Insurance Corporation combination in the mid-1990s. This combination, announced in 1993 and finalized in 1994, would have violated the Glass-Steagall Act and the Bank Holding Acts by combining insurance and securities companies, if not for a temporary waiver process [[1]]. The Glass-Steagall Act prohibited a bank from offering investment, commercial banking, and insurance services.
The law was passed to legalize these mergers on a permanent basis. Historically, the combined industry has been known as the financial services industry.

It increased competition as more firms became well capitalized, it leveled the playing field, improving rates, etc for consumers.

Did you all catch the promo's for Keith's program tonite where he's going to talk about Senator Obama's chances of changing red/swing states to blue?

This is one part of the equation I'm so curious about as I read conflicting stories all the time. Either Senator Obama has a chance to win some of the southern states or no, he doesn't have much a chance at all.

It's amazing how this blog post stupid silly remarks. Bill Clinton might have committed a sin against his family (which is really none of our business). Sure, he denied it - typical of men who get caught - but he did not put the country in any danger. We had a decent economy, it was booming and we had the respect of the world. Respect that at least. All this vile remarks and comments are truly reflective of the kind of people Obama attracts.

It's a shame that Hilary lost. McCain is too old and Obama is too young and inexperienced. She would have been perfect to lead the country out of this mess. Bill's advice would come in handy at her side.

But, not this time
The so-called 'Financial Services Modernization Act' was an abomination
It allowed anti-competitive mergers and combinations
It also loosened regulations on financial institutions
In large part, this contributed to the current mortgage melt down we're now experiencing

Unfortunately, the Clinton Administration sold out consumers and workers with this law and others..... Millenium Telecommunications, NAFTA, WTO (and the whole 'free trade' scam)

I don;t know if Obama will reverse or correct any of these policies (I think John Edwards would have).

Off topic a little here...I've seen several posters inquire on the subtle bias that seems to have snuck in on First Read, and wondering what happened.

What happened is we've started to fall for talking points and the easy story. And what triggered it (check the timing when it switched if you doubt me on this one) is that Tim Russert, rest his soul, left us without a real journalistic on the rudder. Sorry Chuck Todd, et. al. but it's true. You are now the MSM following the shiny objects, instead of the insightful folks looking beyond them.

Russert's death was a national tragedy. What's happened to MSNBC since his passing must have him rolling in his grave.

Yeah Ira, and that is why we had Enron and the mortgage meltdown. Just another way for yuppies who create nothing except paper to make stupid amounts of money and con hard working Americans. That was one of the great blunders of the Clinton administration. We would be better served to let banks be banks and stockbrokers be stockbrokers and insurance agents be insurance agents.
