The Commander-In-Chief of this country is the President of the United States. We may have forgotten this fact because for the last 8 years Bush has delegated that job to various generals.

Admiral Mullen's job is to execute the orders of the Prsident. His opinion as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs is considered. The decision and the responsibility of the decison is that of the President.

This administration has blamed General after General for the failure in Iraq. Forget that the administration had no plan for what was to happen the second we captured Baghdad. There was to be no resistance, we would be treated as liberators. There was no exit strategy. They blamed the Generals, not the Commander-In-Chief, the man responsible for the conduct of the war.

So Mullen can have his opinion. The Iraq's have said repeatedly, clearly and concisely that they want us to leave. They are a free and independent Republic. How can we not respect their wishes.

Thank you for reiterating Senator Obama's well known stance on the redeployment of our troops in Iraq.

Once again, the McCain campaign is lying.

Admiral Mullen, Head of the Joint Chiefs, has held several news conferences lately, espousing the need for more troops in Afghanistan. Mullen said that Bush, and McCain's insistence upon continuing the status quo, militarily in Iraq, is a hamstringing policy which has kept him from being effective in the fight against our attackers on 9/11. The struggle against our terrorist enemies is in the caves of P'stan, and A'stan. (The fact that bin Laden has yet to be held accountable is unconscionable.

Given Obama's consistent, and clear as crystal position stating what he intends, after consulting with US Military Leaders as to ground conditions in Iraq, with troop safety his primary concern, I find Mullen's argued concerns disingenuous, or at least a back pedal.

Perhaps the media has tweaked his comments, and taken them out of context.

I would also like to point out that in the interview with ADM Mullen and the one with Gen P yesterday, they both state that with the mission they have been given they are making these statements. I find it interesting that they BOTH use this phrasing.

Maybe I’m naïve and although I’m totally delighted that Maliki agrees with Senator Obama’s time line and wants our troops out in the “short term” -- his statement “We would like to see the establishment of a long term strategic treaty with the United Sates, which would govern the basic aspects of our economic and cultural relations.” Sounds to me like Bush and Cheney’s big oil companies will get what they want, which is why we went there in the first place. If Obama had an ounce of honesty in him he would have said "18 months since the surge was announced", instead of intetionally misleading people.

Does anyone else find it strange that after repeated calls this week from the Iraqi governement to leave their country as soon as possible and after today's interview with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's with the German magazine Der Spiegel virtually endorsing Obama's troop draw down plan, that the Commander-In-Chief, Admiral Mullen thinks a timed withdrawal is dangerous.

Pretty convenient for McCain and the administration don't you think?

It is sad to see the General Staff of this country used for poitcal gain. The military is supposed to be impartial and mission oriented and not the puppets of a presidential candidadate or party.

Pardon me, but I don't believe FDR micro-managed his Generals in Europe or Admirals in the Pacific as much as Bu$h has done so in Afgan and Iraq.

Also, being a victim of polio, I don't think FDR ever served a day in the military either.

And if I'm not mistaken, under his leadership(not micro-management), the Generals and Admirals were given the freedom to conduct their campaigns against the enemy as they saw fit with the resources available and the US was victorious in wars on both fronts.

So a military background/experience is not a requirement for the position of President or commander-in-chief.

Second, the military shouldn't be in the position of creating or interpreting the news ... that's why we have a media. They should only respond to questions asked of them with specific facts concerning the subject at hand. In other words, they should not generate the news talking points. To do otherwise could be viewed as playing politics in areas where they should be apolitical. In short, the military has no business engaging in politics, especially global...it's not their area of expertise. They should only advise the US government of their concerns or interpretation of events, not the media.

Besides, in December the UN mandate for troops being in Iraq expires. And if Iraq believes they are capable of standing on their own two feet and the UN is in agreement, we have no choice but to leave if asked. That's regardless what we think is best for Iraq.

Starting from Maliki seekingn a timetable when the Bush admin had said they did not want one forcing them to now want a 'time horizon' (how unstupid and uneducated they think we are - no eonoder they keep dumbing down our education system making it easier fo the rich and elite to rule us by proxy through republicans).

The next natural step for Maliki is to look at Obama's timetable (being the only clearly proferred one) and render his judgement on it - on questions from Germany - which he did. He only ocnfirmed what we already knew here that Obama is a very strategic candidate.

Adm. Mullen is an active member of the armed forces and, as such, should limit himself to executing the orders given to him by his superior (as flawed as they might be). If he wants to give his opinion on strategy, he should resign his commission and do so as a civilian.

When you're losing, you will say and do anything to put yourself into a winning mode. This is what's happening to John Mccain. Barack Obama is being accepted by the whole world to be the next president of the United States. Mccain is only being accepted by those that don't know any better. By the way: Obama hasn't just started being recognized, it all began when he gave that marvelous speech at the 2004 Democratic National Convention.
