So McCain is going to NOLA tomorrow to do an event to tout off-shore oil drilling, flying out to a rig on a helicopter, trying to be all Jack Bauer the oil man. His agenda: demonstrate how easy, safe, and important more offshore drilling is.

But there's a problem: today, on the eve of this stunt, there was a huge oil spill in NOLA....a 600-foot tanker and a barge loaded with fuel oil collided Wednesday, breaking the barge in half, more than 419,000 gallons of heavy, almost tar-like fuel oil spilled from the barge, forming a slick 12 miles long, said Lt. Cdr. Cheri Ben-Iesau, a Coast Guard spokeswoman.

For those of you looking to attend this event.....It was canceled, he's going to Ohio instead.

You can't make this stuff up....

Good grief. Bill Clinton had been governor of Arkansas for 12 years. He was the longest-serving governor in the country at that time. Previously he had been Attorney General in Arkansas.

He had a record of accomplishment in Arkansas, he had done great things for that state. Hillary had also accomplished things, such as a reorganization of the Arkansas school system.

Bill's foreign experience came from work with European s on world trade matters.

Mark, Seattle: I don't think you're being banned at all. Chuck, Mark & Domenico are very professional and pretty open minded about what gets posted. I too believe they are just busy and it looks like they work long hours.

I agree! Where's Eric? There are some really terrific people here. Smart, funny, intense & just plain nice.

If Chuck & Co. can put up with us for just over 3 more months, then they deserve something (I thought a free trip to Berlin would have been a wonderful bonus) but I guess it wasn't to be. Must cost a small fortune to send staff all over the Middle East and Europe.

But they sure have taken a lot of grief from people here, undeservedly. They're journalists. We're not. That's the difference.

It sure is a nice Board to visit and read what people are thinking all across the country. But I really do think they do a nice job at running/editing it.

Keep trying. The time difference may be one issue, but I don't know for sure.

I don't like to play rumormill or partisantry, but McCain and Romney attacked each other more ferociously than Obama and Clinton. McCain gave many, many a reason for conservatives to despise Romney. Sure, his VP selection could attempt to pull over liberal or left-leaning moderates, but it's just going to piss off conservatives; especially those of the religious, and yes even fiscal, persuasion. After all, McCain painted him as a taxnspender, pro-abortion libby (all of which are at least somewhat true--before he flipped his positions in the primary).

NEW ORLEANS — The Coast Guard closed 29 miles of the Mississippi River at New Orleans after a 600-foot tanker and a barge loaded with fuel oil collided Wednesday, breaking the barge in half.

Nobody was injured, but more than 419,000 gallons of heavy, almost tar-like fuel oil spilled from the barge, forming a slick 12 miles long, said Lt. Cdr. Cheri Ben-Iesau, a Coast Guard spokeswoman.

The barge "was T-boned and split in half," she said.

The double-hulled tanker Tintomara was loaded with about 4.2 million gallons of biodiesel and nearly 1.3 million gallons of styrene, but was not leaking, said Michael Wilson, president of ship management company Laurin Maritime (America) Inc. in Houston.

The collision occurred about 1:30 a.m. CDT just upriver from the Crescent City Connection, a pair of bridges between New Orleans' east and west banks. A smell which many people thought was diesel was noticeable in the French Quarter and parts of New Orleans' central business district.

The river was closed about 3:30 a.m., about 45 minutes after someone reported a strong odor of diesel coming from the river, Young said. Tug boats were holding the halves of the barge in place, she said.

I know this comment is directly to one of the topis in this thread but I want to say this... McCain made a HUGE blunder regarding the timeline of the surge in his CBS interview. I'm angry at the media for covering it up and ignoring the significance of what happened. The one main stream media exception is Keith Olberman. Keith called it right. The sunni awakening was probably the most significant factor in the improved security situation and that happened well before temporary increase in US troops. McCain tries to give himself too much credit and that's what leads him to lie about the timeline. His claim is like Hillary Clinton's claim to have survived sniper fire. It just didn't happen the way McCain claims and he should be called on it.

McCain is also being allowed to lie about having opposed the mismanagement of the Iraq war. McCain has been a big Bush cheerleader from the very beginning. McCain needs to be called out on this.

Carly Fiorina wouldnt really be a great choice for McCain. He escaped pretty easily earlier this month when Fiorina was going around saying McCain agreed with her that insurance companies that cover viagra should also cover birth control. McCain disagrees with that position and has actually voted against such a perposal. Also, she kept stating that McCain doesnt want to overturn Roe v. Wade. Well actually he does. He has stated that very thing on the campaign trail and it is also posted on his web site. So, I dont think having Fiorina around contradicting McCain's positions is really a great idea. Also, it was a little disappointing when Fiorina was on Meet the Press, Mr. Brokaw didnt even question her about either of those gaffes. Im pretty sure Tim wouldnt have let that slide.

It's easy for Republican Presidents to find minorities to appoint and then brag about. It's a lot harder getting Republicans to vote for them, especially in statewide, much less nationwide elections. There's a reason the vast majority of women and minorities in Congress, for instance, are Democrats. It's the same here in Colorado in the state legislature. It's not as if Bush had to get the base to VOTE for Colin or Condi.

Their claim of before the 4th of July they raised money for Hillary, and so far have raised approximately $10 million. And other sources have said that they are less than $5 million from Hillary being in the black. Yet that claim was by the weekend of July 4th Hillary's debt would be finished.
