Plus, the hurricane was caused by global warming, which started right after George Bush took office. Dick Cheney also had a hand in developing the evil weather machine the Republicans use to disrupt the global weather. Now it's backfiring on them.

These guys (the McCain 'team', if there is such a thing) are not late to the party, they don't even know where the party is or if there is one. The fact that they have had six months to prepare to 'sell' their product suggests not so much that they are incompetent at what they are doing (although I would not rule that out), but that there is very obviously a product (not McCain so much---he really can be a pretty good guy, just not a great leader, but 'more patchwork of fixes Republicanism') which has any chance of being 'bought.' I guess it's a nice honor for McCain to have a chance to play at being a presidential candidate, but all the signs coming from even within that campaign suggest they know there is no real shot and they are going through motions. Things can change, but...

McCain needs to stop gaffing. They need to just run Huckabee at the last second. They might actually have a shot then (they being the Republicans.)

McCain's problem is that he has always been more of a combatant than a leader. His record shows someone who prefers to play devils advocate than to think ahead and come up with plans for the future.

He used to oppose the Republicans on issues and then would run to the media to bask in the spotlight saying he was a rebel that fought for America. Instead of worrying about the future, he's been a glory seeker.

The Reagans despised him because of this. Nancy Reagan called him the most insincere man she ever met.

John McCain is an oil spill waiting to happen.

In any other field John McCain would have long retired and be collecting social security. However, if his country called him to service he'd be qualified to work as a Wal Mart greeter. Now Jim, lets not talk about HOW the oil spilled lets just look to the future and figure out how to get out of the mess.
No one can disagree that McCain was right all along in his conviction that messes should be cleaned up. It is just counter productive to talk about the root cause of any situation.
Reaction is the key.
It's not like we can take the time to analyze past mistakes in order to prevent missteps. Thats sissy talk.
