Three of your major players will have been discredited.

This election and the victory of Obama will not only bring change to the practices and principles of politics in Washington, but it will also see sweeping changes in the world of talking heads and pundits. If you want to issue opinions, state up front these are opinions. These rants are being sold as analysis, and are far short of honest reporting. I did not capture the name of the person yesterday who said Tim Russert would be turning over in his grave with the shoddy performances of his NBC colleagues. I agree.

Repeatedly it has been mentioned that a negative Obama story last for weeks and a McCain gaffe only lasts 2-3 days. I am trying very hard to be honest with myself when I ask where is this so-called Obama favorable bias in the media? I think there is a tremendous amount of jealously from talking heads and pundits over Obama’s success.

Why am I ranting about this? I know my usual friends like Nashville, Pat and others will make similar comments, but what is being glossed over by our supposed experts (except KO) is the most telling aspect of the latest NBC poll, the excitement factor. If the talking heads and pundits would just relax and absorb the groundswell of excitement for Barack, and accept it for its authenticity, then we would be better off in our new reporting and analysis.

Finally, does anyone else think McCain is losing it; both mentally and emotionally?
First thoughts: Obama's election to win

Obama/Biden 08!!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jPev5sEdTjg

First thoughts: Obama's election to win

why cant anyone realize the fact that McCain can't push ahead of obama in the polls this is also mccains election to lose because obama has had a tough primary, his negative are still up from when it ended mccain should be ahead of obama. i think we should look at it from that end.

and i love when obama goes after fox news.

Video: McCains Daughter doesnt think mccains getting unfair media treatment, media party
http://sensico.wordpress.com/2008/07/23/media-unfair-to-mccain-meghan-mccain-seems-to-differ/
or
http://sensico2.blogspot.com/2008/07/my-blogs.html

First thoughts: Obama's election to win

Chuck, perhaps it's time to stop calling this election a referendum on Obama. I get what your point is, but really, that's also an excuse for the press to stop the scrutiny of McCain and his support of the Bush administration.

As for VPs, I say Obama should buck the conventional wisdom and pick a domestic/economy choice.

http://strategy08.wordpress.com

First thoughts: Obama's election to win

Tried to post this yesterday...FR, please look into making this site more blogger friendly, despite what Cheeto Joe says.

"McCain's call for change: “What I want to do, is the day that I am elected, not the day I’m inaugurated but the day I’m elected I want to pick up the phone and call the majority leader, who I’ve known for a quarter of a century. Chuck, NY (Sent Thursday, July 24, 2008 9:28 AM)
___________________________________
Bingo Chuck.

As I watch these dreadful ads coming from the McCain camp, I’m reminded of the damage the commentators on Fox Propaganda have caused this country. Sean Hannity, Bill O’Reilly, Michelle Malkin, Bill Kristol, Ann Coulter, Laura Ingraham, Karl Rove; add into the mix Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck & Michael Savage.

Most of these people are heard all over the country on talk radio all day long. And their message works. Obviously.

And then watch and listen carefully to John McCain. Instead of acting like a 21st century dignified presidential candidate, he is now behaving like one of the right wing commentators mentioned above.

He’s bought into it all - hook, line & sinker. It’s exactly what happened to President Bush. A presidential candidate is supposed to rise above all this nonsense coming from talk radio. All they basically are are a bunch of idiots who have big mouths. They get paid a great deal of money to basically just mouth off.

Why isn’t John McCain able to see them for who they really are?

His ads are disgraceful. His shots at Senator Obama are childish and silly.
______________
Chuck, Yankees/Red Sox - big weekend in the good 'ole summertime.
First thoughts: Obama's election to win

What's disturbing is the press coverage afforded Obama vs. McCain. You'd hope the media, and maybe there's a thousand or so people that control what is covered, would not have such a profound affect on the election. The all out blitz for nearly 100% coverage of Obama and 0% coverage McCain does have an effect. The media provides this fawning coverage of Obama, and then they act surprise when the poll numbers rise accordingly. Obama, who really doesn't offer much in ideas or anything else for that matter, is just another passenger on the medias coat-tails. The media through will turn on Obama soon enough.

First thoughts: Obama's election to win

Has Rob Portman taken the Joe Lieberman speed word correction course needed for the job?
All over the map McGoofy shows Jindal may be to young to understand the virtues of history, no matter how distorted it is ...any way Jindal looks to healthy and handsome next to McGoofy...not good...

First thoughts: Obama's election to win

Hey, First Read --- Don't hassle "the Hoff!"

First thoughts: Obama's election to win

"How important has this overseas trip been for Obama? Urgh! Watching Morning Joe just infuriates me. Why does Joe Scarborough think he's more knowledgeable about the situation in Iraq then Wesley Clark? He pretty much said this morning that everyone who didn't take his view on how the "surge" was so successful in Iraq is an idiot. Really Joe? He is SO condescending! I really can't believe Mika sits there and talks his crap every morning. She's so weak! I agree with someone who said yesterday that they need someone like Rachel Maddow in there who would go toe to toe with Joe and his bull****! It's like watching a train wreck. Steele Fort Lauderdale, FL

Everyday as this historic election continues, my opinion of our media has diminished. I first attributed my disdain for the media (AKA "The Beast") to a blatant dishonesty, cowardice, and partisanship. Now I'm truly noticing a pattern of incompetence. When REAL experts on a subject appear on a subject (such as Dr. Brzezinski and to a much smaller extent, Gen. Clark) it has been shown that the punditocracy really knows nothing. I went back last night and watched those two experts on Morning Joe and it was apparent that Joe (much like most of our lazy media) only was armed with flimsy talking points while these two interviewees had a deeper, more sophisticated knowledge of the subjects. I can place a safe bet that most of our media talking heads have known nothing of the complexities of Saudia Arabian involvement with the Sunni tribes and what the "Awakening" really was. The only pluses from this foolish "the surge was right" storyline is that more regular people are at least seeing the nuance and other contributing factors of our current situation in the Middle East and that Sen. McCain only has a very simplistic view of foreign policy.

The CW this election cycle has been wrong so often because the fact is that our press doesn't do any individual research. I now believe that many in our press don't understand the Constitution and the powers granted to the President. They take offense when Sen. Obama (and some of his surrogates) bring it to their attention that Gen. Petraeus does not outrank the President and call him 'cocky'. Sen. McCain is believed to have experience because he tells good war stories and has white hair. Listen carefully to the Senator from Arizona when he speaks about issues such as Iranian relations, Afghanistan, or Israel-Palestinian conflict. Everything is barbaric and simplified to a point where he says, "Them bad, us good, we must fight!" Sounds just like Bush and his "Axis of Evil". McCain can't give a sophisticated explanation of these matters because the truth is that he doesn't know, he's only just spent a lot of time in Washington instead of actual learning. McCain only has foreign policy gravitas because the media says so. If the media knew anything about foreign policy then they would see that (McCain) the emperor has no clothes.

First thoughts: Obama's election to win

That Hasselhoff reference is an insult to us Germans.

First thoughts: Obama's election to win

Finally, does anyone else think McCain is losing it; both mentally and emotionally?

Chuck, NY (Sent Thursday, July 24, 2008 9:28 AM)

------------
In a word...yes. Its scary to think that in his first term, McCain would be 73. Seeing McCain's campaign essentially implode over the past two weeks gave me insight into real problems the candidate may have. In fact I'm beginning to wonder is he really as qualified to be POTUS...has his candidacy an act at this point? He has proposed scant policy, spend 90% of his time slamming Obama, and instead of seperating...has further embraced Bush. Is he indifferent, does he not have fresh ideas, is he essentially "too old" to care about getting this country off of it's wrong track. These seeds have began to plant themselves in my mind and I think voters may began to re-evaluate McCain as well. After seeing Obama move across the world and meet with leaders with ease..it's obvious he is capable of getting them on his side; earning their admiration and respect. Could McCain even muster that much support abroad? Are these "gaffes" showing a real lack of knowledge on McCain's part? These are real questions I would like the media to begin asking. No more covering up and kid-gloves for McCain.

Please consider this Chuck, Murray.

First thoughts: Obama's election to win

The poll is still a lagging indicator. It was finished on Monday, and most of it was conducted while the debate was going on as to whether or not Maliki supported a withdrawal timetable similar to Obama or not, which wasn't resolved until Monday. I'd wait until a poll conducted completely after his return to the US, and one specifically looking for a shift in the "commander-in-chief" question, to make judgments on the impact of the trip.

As to the overall number, I'd wait a week or so after that. My guess is Obama wants to use this trip to put the foreign policy question to rest, then pivot on returning home squarely to the economy, which will be the focus from tonight until the convention. That's the isue people care most about right now, and Obama hasn't touched it since he's been overseas. Obama is struggling to "close the deal." There are still deep prejudices toward Obama despite the fact that he has opened up his life to us far more than any other candidate has ever done.

He has demonstrated none of the things that many people prefer to fear about him. He is a Christian but McCain could be a Warlock and nobody would seem to mind. Obama has experience outside of the Beltway, but Sen. McCain is preferred because he's been a Washington insider for 40 years and with precious little to show for it, I might add. Sen. Obama has articulated his opposition to the war in Iraq when it was political suicide to do so. John McCain is Mr. War personified, dredging up his POW status at every opportunity. This gives him no better qualifications to lead our country or to win a war that has long been lost already.

If McCain's pitiful campaign is any indication of his skill to be President, then Heaven help us because he won't remember where Pennsylvania Ave is come the fall.

So, this is Obama's election to win? I'm grateful for that because he has stepped up to every challenge and surpassed every expectation. He has been on the world's stage this week and has proven what a great President and leader he would be despite McCain throwing tomatoes at him every single day.

GOD BLESS PRESIDENT OBAMA AND GOD BLESS AMERICA

First thoughts: Obama's election to win

FR - I am questioning your polling techniques and who you people poll.

The numbers don't seem to match the excitement I read about all day on other blogs, phone calls, networks - here in PA.

When I talk to my friends in VA, GA, TN, LA, NY, NJ,NC,SC,AL, MS,OH, military buddies overseas there a movement of gigantic porportions and many, many people that are voting for Barack Obama and change.

I strongly suggest that you guys start explaining not just the numbers - but where, who and how you get them.

Because these numbers can not be true representation of how most Americans feel and who they want for President.

This polling business is really starting to be annoying and unbelievable.

It even seem contradictory - how can there be 60% excitement for Barack Obama - but yet he has a 6 point lead.

Boy do we really need Tim back - to get the math right.

Thank you and GOD BLESS AMERICA

First thoughts: Obama's election to win

Jerry, you say liberalism is a disease? I say, you are like a bad case of herpes on top of a worse case of gen. warts!

First thoughts: Obama's election to win

NBC is baaaaack, with the same "tight race" spin they used to pump up their ratings during the Dem primary.

Here's where the race really stands:

Obama is leading in 11 of the 12 swing states that were decided by a margin of five points or less in 2004 including five of the six that were carried by George Bush. And while Obama has a comfortable lead in every state that John Kerry won by a margin of more than five points in 2004, McCain is in a difficult battle in a number of states that Bush carried by a margin of more than five points including such solidly red states as Indiana, Montana, North Dakota, Virginia, and North Carolina.

While no election outcome is guaranteed and McCain's prospects could improve over the next three and a half months, virtually all of the evidence -- historical patterns, structural features of this election cycle, and national and state polls conducted over the last several months -- point to a comfortable Obama/Democratic party victory in November.

Trumpeting this race as a toss-up, almost certain to produce another nail-biter finish, distorts the evidence and does a disservice to readers and viewers who rely upon such punditry.

First thoughts: Obama's election to win

I think all the wealthy east coast pundits are afraid that they may have to pay their fair share of taxes if obama wins. like everything else in this country "it’s all about the money". the republicans have turned this country into a haven for the wealthy at the poors expense, a wage earner can't hide any of their money form the irs, can't take many frivolous deductions when you can't make the deduction threshold. the tax system has been messaged by the republican elitists to favor the republican elitists, what they hide and write off the wage earner makes up, investment returns are not treated as income, and the money from those investmates that used to mean new jobs and facilities in the u.s. now is used to build facilities outside the country, the return on those investments should be taxed at about 100% unless it can be proven that said investmates help u.s. workers. the american worker used to have employer provided benefits, now in an effort to get the investors more return those benefits are gone, and the good republican party thinks that only the wealthy are entitled to healthcare and a dignified retirement. the great republican farce has turned the greatest nation on earth into nothing but a memory for most, this will not stand.
so you pundits continue your assault on obama even though you know that he is the only choice when it comes to what is truly best for the country as a whole, clinch your fists full of money and grit your teeth while making disingenuous comments about obama, change is inevitable get used to the idea.
First thoughts: Obama's election to win

I find it quite un-newsworthy that your poll shows no indication of a trip-abroad bounce for Obama. There are the types who are enormously or pretend that they are. In order to maintain that wealth or power, they will sacrifice anything and everything (armed forces lives, American jobs, reasonable health care) just to maintain their way of life. They are keenly aware that this election is about maintaining a lifestyle based on the major economic commodities like oil, and ability of an oil based economy to maintain their wealth. There are offshoots of this philosophy: the removal of Saddam Hussein to allow the major oil companies to confiscate Iraqi oil; the prevalence of lobbyist access to preserve nefarious interests for personal enrichment; the disdain for global warming, the fear of alternative energy choices, the lack of concern and the advocation of job outsourcing to foreign companies for shareholder profit; the utter lack of concern for affordable healthcare, thereby enriching the insurance companies, and the lack of concern for the current housing situation.
The second type of "pseudo" neocons are represented by the uneducated, uninformed gullible people who spout the rhetoric that "Obama is a Turrist/Muslim/fist pumping/bogeyman who is goin to send all our money to Africa!". These sad individuals are easy prey for the neocon fear mongers. The neocons know that they can play on inherent fears of these mentally challenged individuals, and get them stirred up enough to post on these blogs very racist biased opinions that are downright lies. The neocons then can sit back and laugh at how they manipulated the witless; thereby insuring that the Bush/McCain demagoguery continues. That has been the formula for 2000, and 2004 elections; I suspect it will go into overdrive.
The so called "PUMAs", "Operation Chaos" supporters supporting this attempt to prop up Hillary (Hillary will not effectively distance herself from this because of her personal narcissism) are further attempts to maintain power for the neocons.
Obviously biased reporting (Faux noise, C(more)BS with Katie Couric, Andrea Mitchell, George Stephanopolos and others have a stake in the status quo; hence their biased reporting.
The solution to this continual quagmire of BS is to speak out and challenge these neocon fearmongers at every turn.
Our country is at stake We have the truth on our side. We must not let Bush/Cheney/McCain win again.

First thoughts: Obama's election to win

*** Going for the gold: The AP writes, "Barack Obama is going for the gold. Can't stand Scarborough and Mika's bowing down to him sends woman BACK about 100 years. Sounds like Andrea Mitchell is continuing her "I'm bitter because Hillary didn't win" fest in her reporting, too. NOT one single reporter on MSNBC gives a fair and balanced report. They think you want THEIR opinions on the candidates. Even Keith. EVERYONE knows he supports Obama; therefore they agree with whatever he says. But is that FAIR and BALANCED reporting? No. It is not. No one just gives you the facts and let's you make up your own minds. Look at how CBS covered-up (once again) for Telfon John. Doesn't the public NEED to know this man is senile and can't keep his stories straight? In 2004, the media help elect George W Bush. Are we going to let that happen again this year? I sure hope not. McCain is getting more and more desperate by the day.....I'm sure we'll be seeing Rev. Wright emerge, again, very soon. What else does the GOP have? Not much....including a candidate.

First thoughts: Obama's election to win

To C.K. He treats the Presidential election like a Disney Land attraction and while it appears fun ,in the end it is only make believe. He lies to the Jews (who his church preaches hate of), he lies to whites(whom his church of 20 years preaches hate of), he lies to women about making them equal (but calls a professional reporter sweetie, didn't call a man sweetie), lies about his votes as Senator said he pulled the switch wrong SIXTIMES!) He lies to black men about being responsible, (but let his opening number call women "HOs", He lies to the people about their welfare, (but he calls people ignorant (especially those who don't agree with him) white gun toting religious cling, anti-immigration. He lies about race shouldn't matter, but his minions call everyone a racist who again doesn't buy into his rhetoric, He lies about promises he can't keep.

He tries to steal the Presidential Seal as if it were his own and replace it with his own name. He calls for unity, but incites hatred of his followers for anyone not buying into his garbage. Just look at the above.

He uses Reverend Wright tactics to incite hattres and eventually violence to those who won't agree with him.

This is the core of the man and his beliefs, which is to only control of the masses so that they may heap Godlike praise upon him.

First thoughts: Obama's election to win

Linda, Boston: I couldn't agree with you more. I believe that's why they're always asking "why isn't Obama ahead by more" instead of asking why, with his name recognition, years in the Senate, pow story, etc., isn't he ahead. I still believe that race plays a role in these polls and if Obama were Caucasian, this contest wouldn't even be close.

First thoughts: Obama's election to win

"Recession?
