He challenged the notion that drilling was the answer to the crisis, saying the effort may not have an impact for 10 years, if at all.
Obama countered that McCain has said no to higher fuel efficiency standards and investing in alternative energy.

Obama needs to consult with oil experts. I've seen some on TV recently debunking the 10 yr myth. In many places offshore, the equipment is in place and ready to go.
Re: McCain being opposed to alternatives, Obama needs to read McCain's Lexington Plan. He needs to listen to McCain's positions. He is in favor of alternatives as part of a comprehensive energy plan. Obama's plan is for taxing the oil companies which will most certainly drive prices higher and alternatives only. His estimates are being energy independent by 2025. What do we do in the meantime, Mr Obama? McCain has a plan that has immediate, intermediate and long term answers.

People are accusing McCain of being negative. What was Obama being in this speech? Listen to the tone. It displays that arrogance people mention and is full of snide remarks. Not what I want in a president.

Oh sure. On one side we have veteran war hero, in congress for decades, who works very well across the aisle with the opposing party, and has an impressive resume to prove his track record.

On the other side we have someone who hasn't done a thing either as a state or US senator, whose history we know about isn't very reassurring or well known, has close associations with some fairly bizarre and shady characters, and has more questions about himself then he has answers.

So who exactly is the bigger risk here?

Even IF we can get the oil earlier than 10 years or whatever, it doesn't matter because:

- off shore drilling doesn't address our dependence on oil: a finite, expensive, and polluting fuel;

- off shore drilling endangers our coastlines (hurting our environment and the economy of states depending on income from vital tourism);

- off shore drilling may provide some oil, but it is not much, and what the companies get does NOT have to be put on the American market. What obligation do oil companies have to sell it to us, not abroad? (where they can probably make a lot more profit)

Off shore drilling is NOT the answer. Even T. Boone Pickens, the billionaire Republican says "We can't drill our way out of this one."

It is funny how conservation and conservative are polar opposites in the political world. Drill and burn will definitely reduce the cost of fuel while conservation is a personal virtue and has no merit in the conservative solution to high fuel prices. What is really behind the desire to open up our precious natural resources for more drill and burn practices? More drilling or drilling access is a political myth that can be sold to the conservative voter. We will eventually need to drill and burn if we cannot find a viable solution to the future energy needs. If all access were open to off shore and the ANWR for exploration and drilling, it would be more than ten years before a drop would come to market. The oil companies simply do not have the physical and financial resources to explore, develop and supply oil in less time. Each energy company is already using all of the resources available to find and extract reserves. A 70.00 a barrel price of oil is all the incentive oil companies need. If the issue were purely supply and demand then we would be well supplied at current prices. I have not seen any shortages or people not able to buy gas.

okay, let's try this one more time.

In a just released bush government story, off shore drilling will NOT lead to any reduction in costs at the pump since the soonest the oil could possibly realized is 2030.

between 30 and 50% at the pump cost are due to speculators much like ENRON did with electric costs. at the present time refining capacity is at 98% this is where the drill now theory falls apart. if the oil companies drilled more, it would just mean more oil EXPORTED to china or india.

gas prices are killing my family quite literally. it has overtaken our mortgage per month (around 1200) so i only wish you were correct. the bottom line is regulation is needed to curb the speculative aspects of the market. you could use national security as a reason if it makes you feel better.

counrty before party... we need national healthcare now. any time cost benefit analysis is involved,people suffer. people with real names and real problems.

After McCain was for opening up drilling in Alaska he received 1 million and change from the oil companies for his campaign. 25 Years in Congress, it should be easy enough.

McCain as opposed or not voted on issues involving alternative fuels over the last decade. When we had the chance to act, when Oil was cheap and gas prices were low, the Senator from Arizona, and congress as a whole, ignored Alternative energy. They said it wasn't needed, but it's needed now. If we would have invested in Alternative fuels 10 years ago, we'd be seeing those results now. There is no easy fix to gas prices. Drilling for more oil will just re-enforce our dependence on oil. And in 20 years, when we are in the same situation again, we will be scratching are head at why we didn't start developing alternative fuels.

Most people are on the verge of losing everything they have worked hard for. Its easy for McBush to tell us to trust him. He shows up in a grocery store and we damned well know that as a lifelong military person, he at at the officers mess, and Ms. Cindy sends Carlitta to the supermarket. They don't care how much things costs. In June she spent over $750,000 on herself!

I am willing to risk all that I have left to get the GOP out of the White House. They have had 8 years to screw things up. That is enough.
