It is sad that that small parenthetical statement sent a shiver down my spine. So many bad memories of the McCain/Bush tag team on Senator Obama about the military hospital visit in Germany.

That entire incident has to go down as one of the more shameful campaign moments in American history. And yet, the media let it fester for days before even bothering to mention that it wasn't true.

I have come to expect so little of the media and politicians, but I must say, even cynical me was SHOCKED by the cold and calculted nature of this attack.

It didn't make me mad so much as sad - for America and for the soldiers.

We all deserve so much better.

My I propose my alternative opinion on the Paris effect. I've noticed that the purple/light blue states continue to trend towards Obama. Maybe that is the effect of McCain eroding his reputation with the center-left independants and Reagan Democrats. Every time McCain pulls stunts his own message gets drowned out by Obama's response and it gives the impression he isn't being serious about his campaign. I was concerned about national polling..but if the states continue to trend to Obama..my thinking is the national polling will follow.

Chuck Todd: It appears that you want the MSNBC viewer to believe the election is closer than it really is. Let's begin with with PA. PA Obama leads 49-42, up by seven. That is beyond the error of measurement and has had Obama leading in PA for months. Now MI. Obama leads 46-42 granted closer but beyond error of measurement and steady for months.
National has Obama up by 6 and Gallup has Obama up by 4. Abramowitz takes the Gallup daily tracking poll since June 5th, creates a ten day average and has Obama up by 3-4 points. The daily variance is "statistical noise".

Real Clear Politics has Obama with 322 and McCain with 216, Electoral Vote has Obama up with 316 and McCain with 209, Pollser has Obama up with 284 to McCains 147. As of 8/5/08 Zogby has Obama with 273 with McCain 146 (too close to call 119)

So why would you keep Mi and Pa in the undecided column? If you put Mi and Pa in the Obama column, you could still change it of the polling numbers change. I do not want to believe it is to create a false sense of closeness when Obama is steadly pulling ahead. What is nice about this election is that the more informed voters can seek out many of the sources you use and come to a different and (perhaps more accurate) conclusion.

Bill Clinton's comments actually point to one of the reasons Obama may not put Hillary on the ticket--sometimes the things he says are not helpful. Given McCain's occasional epileptic fits (e.g. Sturgis) and his Senior Moments (Sunni/Shiite and many others) and his horrendous campaign staff, I'm guess Obama will win. 'Nuff said.
As for Paris's ad, it was unexpectedly smart and funny. I think the beginning, comparing McOld to famous "ancient of days" characters in pop culture with the pronouncement (true) that McCain is the oldest man to run for President, plus her referring to him as "the wrinkled old guy with the white hair" was not much in McCain's favor. It scared me that her suggestion of an energy policy made more sense than EITHER of the candidates. Paris Hilton, political strategist...who woulda thunk it?

Obama asks Americans to properly inflate their tires to help save gas. Simple, to the point, easy to understand, something all who own vehicles can do, an immediate savings. And he gets mocked for it by McCain. An Obama Presidency will be one where the administration does what it can to serve the interests of its people. But it will also be an administration that will ask the American people for help where they can take steps to benefit the good of all. Some call Obama an elitist yet he appears humble enough to me to understand that he (as President) will need the help of the American people to make inroads into some of the issues facing us today. He is not JFK, but he certainly has the same vision and understanding of what it takes to move a country forward - A caring administration that leads and a nation of people who asks what they can do for their country.
If those yet undecided about a candidate will consider the small things Obama has spoken about and that he has exhibited and not just the major policy issues they would know we need him as our next President. Not because he is perfect or that he will not make some errors along the way. They all do. They are all human. But because of the fact that he asks people to inflate their tires, he asks a heckler to lead a crowd in the pledge of allegiance, he responds to the race card issue by seeking greater understanding between the races, he supports the death penalty if someone harms one of our kids, he softens his personal position on issues when he sees it is a direction the American people want to go, he tells Pakistan we will come and get Bin Laden if they do not because Bin Laden is responsible for 911, he states violence in Baghdad has decreased because of the surge yet still is bothered by the initial invasion because of the loss of thousands of American lives, he stands firm on the opponent’s summer gas tax proposal because he knows it will not benefit Americans as being promised, he does want all American to have health care, he does support a woman's right to chose, he opposes torture, he handles hecklers with calm and respect, he exhibits deep love for his wife and children (they are at his side, not walking behind him), etc. etc.
The fact is that Obama has his flaws as we all do. But Obama has shown and does show his human side and that there is a sensitivity and empathy for people lying within his soul. People share reasons they do not like or prefer Obama and if based on a disagreement with Obama's policy proposals that is fine. But one cannot accept those who argue he has no proposals or the he is elitist or a celebrity. Those are surface reasons and held by those it is best to hold one’s breadth arguing with. What this country needs is someone as Obama who is made up of those things mentioned in this post. I’m sure McCain is a fairly decent man but we have had enough rigidity and a view of the world that is constantly suspicious and on-guard to last us a life time. Let’s put Obama in office. Let him grow and le the American people grow with him. There will be a special bond that develops between the American people and Obama, even with those who may not yet want to throw him their full support. They won’t be disappointed in what lies underneath that politician’s exterior.

Speaking of energy issues- suppose we DO start drilling today. Let's say we get a million barrels a day. This would cause speculator-related activity to immediately bring prices down, right? I used to be a big Bill Clinton fan/defender/apologist, not anymore...these days, its like the guy has lost it completely! Hillary is full strong campaigning for Obama; her endorsement was nothing short of 100%, knowing it is more important to do so for party unity, and for the sake of country, or else, we end up with 4 years of McInsane. I suspect that given this total disconnect between Hillary's actions [actively campaigning on her own for Obama] vs. Bill's current statements, these two really don't see or talk to each other much if at all these days!

I disagree...the Paris video hurts McCain, as it plays the age/generational card (and then some), which only highlights the huge age/generation gap between him and Obama. While Obama would have not played this card directly, the contrast drawn in the video could not have been made clearer to the average voter.

So, the age cat is out of the bag in a big way now, and McCain won't be able to put it back in.

John McCain has an excellent chance of winning and, I am not surprised the poll is starting to show McCain ahead. Many of the Hillary Clinton supporters do not like Barack Obama and they are voting against Obama by voting for John McCain. There are too many inconsistencies in Obama's biography, his background in Chicago politics, and the church he attended 20 years along with some of the people he associated with that do not set well with many Americans (democrats and republicans). Obama has a record of voting present much of the time which shows he didn't do a good job as a senator, so why elect him to a higher office?

I think the Middle East and European tour may have hurt Obama more than it helped him. It proved again how much Obama advertises himself and how the American media follows him around trying to shove him down the throats of American voters. It all looked so staged and phony. It was obvious Obama loved making a grand attention-getting speech to a huge crowd in Germany, but on "Meet the Press" he said he thinks there have been enough debates. Obama doesn't want to debate John McCain or answer impromptu questions. This might show how inexperienced he really is. Obama would much rather perform to a huge crowd and give a prepared speech using a teleprompter so he can be a "rock star". I think Obama is "The Great Pretender" and I will definitely vote against Obama even though I am a life-long democrat.

While I sometimes share your frustration with First Read, it really is the best of the major networks. The point is that the Hilton ad does three things that helps McCain:

1. Continues the Obama as a celebrity comparison.
2. Puts Paris, whom, let's face it, 90% of middle America can't stand against John McCain, which automatically makes him look like the 'good guy'.
3. She puts up an energy plan eerily similar to what Obama has proposed, giving McCain ammo.

Honestly, I wish Paris would just go away, especially given the media's odd fascination with her and the exposure this retarded spot is getting. It certainly does not help Obama.

My daughters speak 3 languages; I speak two and understand 3. We’re an average American white family and we feel privileged to have the ability to speak to Germans, Norwegians and Frenchmen in their own language. We also know that keeping our tires properly inflated and out cars properly serviced saves us about 3% at the pump.
