From NBC's Domenico MontanaroThe closing of a DHL facility that would cost the town of Wilmington, Ohio, more than 8,000 jobs, has been a hot-button local issue that has crept into the presidential race. But note at the beginning of McCain’s statement how he accuses Russia of violating Georgia’s boundaries and being the aggressor when no one is yet sure who actually started the hostilities. Some reports state that Georgia was the aggressor and that Russia was reacting to protect its citizens in South Ossetia. If the U.S. is to expect two parties to respond to calls from the U.S. to end the hostilities we need a President who does not blindly label one the aggressor unless it can be proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that one is in fact the true aggressor and the other was simply defending itself.

This is an example of McCain’s world (black and white). There has to be fault assigned to someone. Even if McCain cannot prove one way or the other where the fault lies. This is how McCain would handle all of his foreign policy decisions. Black and white, no grey areas, immediate siding with one party or the other. Off the cuff statements that are not productive for a call for diplomacy. Trying to find and assign blame instead of stepping in as an impartial peace maker. Immediately angering one side or the other so calls for a ceasefire go unheeded. Placing an immediate barrier between the U.S. and one or the other party required to secure a peaceful solution.

If this country elects John McCain look for U.S and Russian relations to quickly deteriorate even lower then what they have already become. McCain will take us back to the days of the cold war and perhaps even beyond. One can talk tough and strongly pursue U.S. policy and U.S. interests with both friend and foe. But one will get nowhere if when such incidents arise we have a President that immediately lays blame (perhaps incorrectly), and muddies up a statement calling for a peaceful solution by alienating one of the parties.

This is why we need Obama. He understands the difference between those times when U.S. aggression might be required versus those times when the U.S. needs to act as a mediator. And no mediator worth their salt starts the process by assigning blame to just one side or the other. There was no such assignment or inference of blame in Obama’s statement as to who was the bad guy here. There was a call for a ceasefire and a diplomatic solution. If you were leading the delegation from Russia in any form of cease fire peace talk with Georgia with the U.S. acting as the mediator who would you fear and “not trust” and who would you fear and “trust”. The answer is obvious.
Obama Ohio ad: Is it fair?

Dear First Read:

When will we get a headline followed by "Is It Fair?" for Senator Obama? After seeing how Obama's been on the defensive, let's see how McCain will respond to these charges. As for how McCain (and Davis) can be held responsible, they obviously didn't make any decisions to close down the DHL Air Park facility, but I can see them giving promises and false hopes (while Mr. Davis collected his money and McCain some future campaign capital favors) to the citizens here. Look, both men were involved in this deal. McCain's running for President, and Davis is one of his right hand men. Fair or not, that's politics. Ask Obama about the charges that have been leveled against him, "fair or not".

Obama Ohio ad: Is it fair?

It's been a good week. First Read is trying to do better at fact-finding the truth. People are complimenting First Read for doing Fact-Check. This is good.

For all Obama supporters, there is a great article posted on Huffington Post by Mark Nicholas on the popular vote v electoral college (Why the media badly needs a history lesson). I strongly urge everyone to read it. Chuck Todd knows this information as I have heard him allude to the significance of a 3 to 5 point lead in the polls. However MSNBC producers of Hardball, Race to the White House, Verdict, Gregory, Barnakle, Matthews really need to read this article. Pat Buchanan and Joe Scar... wouldn't get it if they had a tutor. Obama's national lead has been very stable (3 to 6 points) and these numbers will translate to a significant electoral win for Obama.
\huffingtonpost.com/mark-nicholas/popular-vote-v-electoral_b_117525.htlm

Obama Ohio ad: Is it fair?

Obama: Have you flip-flopped on your different kind of politics? Whether a fair hit or not it seems the Obama campaign has decided to act in some form of retaliation to the lies and misrepresented Ads that the McCain camp has been publishing. Like MvcCains Ad that Obama wants to raise taxes on those making $42,000 when Obama's position has been clear. Which is to raise taxes on only those making over $250,000. So is the Ad fair you ask. Who cares. McCain wants to play this kind of game so be it. The thing about it is that at least a portion of the Obama Ad about McCain and Davis is true. None of the Mccain Ad about Obama is true.

Funny how you guys say that's politics when Mccain runs a misleading Ad. Then you ask when is Obama going to begin hitting back? Is he too weak? Then when Obama hits back with an Ad that is at least partially true versus that of McCains which is an all out lie, now let's see how you react. Will you now blast Obama for being too agressive? You know, no matter which way Obama goes he gets criticized. Too weak - too agressive, too Black - not Black enough, presumptuous versus cool and confident, too intelligent - not enough detail, plays the race card - tries to improve race relations, too left - too moderate, etc., etc.

Obama Ohio ad: Is it fair?

Why haven't you devoted this much ink to checking the lies in all of McCain's ads?

Obama Ohio ad: Is it fair?

FAIR!!!! Now you'r concerned about fair? When you go to other countries they complain about US companies because the companies invest then leave without any regard for the local consequences. The same is true of foreign companies here. There can be no political pressure on a foreign company who pulls the plug without factoring in the human cost.
