Is it me or do we see an awful lot of these ads on both sides...you take a small association or role or sentence, take it out of context and make a political ad out of it. Even as a McCain supporter, I'm not blind to the fact that both sides pull this stunt a lot.

Also, since I didn't get posted on the prior item, do a bit more research on the Tax Policy group mentioned below and you'll find that it's part of the Brookings Institution, who, despite what they may say, has been described by Time, The New York Times, and the LA Times as a liberal think tank. Just because they say they are non-partisan doesn't make it true.

Note the difference in the statements made by McCain and Obama regarding the Russian/Georgian issue. Both call for a ceasefire and for the parties to enter into peaceful talks to resolve the issue. But note at the beginning of McCain’s statement how he accuses Russia of violating Georgia’s boundaries and being the aggressor when no one is yet sure who actually started the hostilities. Some reports state that Georgia was the aggressor and that Russia was reacting to protect its citizens in South Ossetia. If the U.S. is to expect two parties to respond to calls from the U.S. to end the hostilities we need a President who does not blindly label one the aggressor unless it can be proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that one is in fact the true aggressor and the other was simply defending itself.

This is an example of McCain’s world (black and white). There has to be fault assigned to someone. Even if McCain cannot prove one way or the other where the fault lies. This is how McCain would handle all of his foreign policy decisions. Black and white, no grey areas, immediate siding with one party or the other. Off the cuff statements that are not productive for a call for diplomacy. Trying to find and assign blame instead of stepping in as an impartial peace maker. Immediately angering one side or the other so calls for a ceasefire go unheeded. Placing an immediate barrier between the U.S. and one or the other party required to secure a peaceful solution.

If this country elects John McCain look for U.S and Russian relations to quickly deteriorate even lower then what they have already become. McCain will take us back to the days of the cold war and perhaps even beyond. One can talk tough and strongly pursue U.S. policy and U.S. interests with both friend and foe. But one will get nowhere if when such incidents arise we have a President that immediately lays blame (perhaps incorrectly), and muddies up a statement calling for a peaceful solution by alienating one of the parties.

This is why we need Obama. He understands the difference between those times when U.S. aggression might be required versus those times when the U.S. needs to act as a mediator. And no mediator worth their salt starts the process by assigning blame to just one side or the other. There was no such assignment or inference of blame in Obama’s statement as to who was the bad guy here. There was a call for a ceasefire and a diplomatic solution. If you were leading the delegation from Russia in any form of cease fire peace talk with Georgia with the U.S. acting as the mediator who would you fear and “not trust” and who would you fear and “trust”. The answer is obvious.

But I can also objectively say that 1) it comes nowhere close to the out-and-out lies being put into the MSM by the McCain campaign, and 2) Even if you can't totally pin the DHL job losses on McCain, you CAN pin them on the poor decision-making and failing policies of the Bush Administration, which McCain thinks we should continue. I strongly urge everyone to read it. Chuck Todd knows this information as I have heard him allude to the significance of a 3 to 5 point lead in the polls. However MSNBC producers of Hardball, Race to the White House, Verdict, Gregory, Barnakle, Matthews really need to read this article. Pat Buchanan and Joe Scar... wouldn't get it if they had a tutor. Obama's national lead has been very stable (3 to 6 points) and these numbers will translate to a significant electoral win for Obama.

Dom, it's a good post except that saying that an American company would do the same thing is unfair speculation. When you go to other countries they complain about US companies because the companies invest then leave without any regard for the local consequences. The same is true of foreign companies here. There can be no political pressure on a foreign company who pulls the plug without factoring in the human cost. Not to mention foreign profits go back to other countries instead of staying here.

Depends on your definition of 'fair'. What would be interesting is to see if there are any incentives or credits being given for those jobs to ship out. That has been the norm in these situations. Carly Fiorina did it at HP. Incenting companies to send the jobs overseas is the part of the Corporate Welfare program that has many appalled. I do not have knowledge in this incident; but nothing surprises me anymore.

I think it is great that you are looking at ads from both sides and parsing them. It's about time someone did.

That said, the difference between the McCain Ad mentioned earlier on First Read and the Obama Ad here is that everything in the Obama ad is true. The question is whether or not it is fair to blame McCain for the loss of jobs - and the people at whom this ad is directed can make that determination.

The McCain ad, on the other hand, made some blatantly false statements (Obama voted to raise taxes on people who make $40K / year...for example, is not true)

Actually, it is a fair ad. There is nothing in the script that is untrue. The AFL-CIO President is correct.

This happens a lot actually. A foreign corporation steps in and buys (either outright or a controlling stake) in a US company. Initially, things are great. But if there is a downturn in business, or a need for cutbacks/consolidation - guess who inevitably pays the price? You don't for one minute think it's the executives who made the deal do you? No, it's the workers. For the stockholders and the executives it's great. But the little guy very often gets hurt in the end.

Doesn't it strike you as just a little phony for McCain to turn around and now be for the little guy?

It isn't 100% fair. Given that there was an increase at some point, you can't totally blame McCain for the fall. It is the way that somethings happen. After the countless misrepresentations and out right lies of of the John McCain ads (for example, Obama is to blame for high gas prices) about Obama, how could you put your fingers to the keyboard to type "Obama Ad: Is it Fair?" Ask yourselves this question: Was it McCann who used his influence in the Senate to get this deal done? If your answer is "yes," then the ad is fair? He did not blame McCain for the downfall. He merely pointed out that it was McCain who had a hand in getting the deal done. When are you people in the media going to quit giving this man a pass? Had it been Barack Obama who had done this, it would be plastered all over the media. Over and over, McCain makes missteps and false accusations and the media slaps him on the hands. On the other hand, Obama is given a harsher punishment. Wake up, Obama is being treated as the stepchild in a this Media Marriage.

one of the things that i question is the often used statement from jm, that he has not asked for nor gotten "earmarks" or special projects for his state, constituents, and supporters (other than corporate). and yet, his constituents still vote for him.

as part of our representative government system (our republic) our representatives are there to "bring home the bacon" with federal resources to improve the district, region or state. other than that, what good is he or she.

one other thing i think needs to be brought up. john is disingenous with his so-called anti-earmark stance. although he has not brought home anything for his people, he has done a whole lot of favors for corporations around his state, the ones that contribute heavily to his campaignes.

but this is not being investigated nor talked about in the main media.
