It seems unlikely that Putin now can be seen as backing down from U.S. tough talk. That simply won't play at home in Moscow, especially given our hypocrisy of feigning outrage that Russia would violate another country's sovereignty.

So we've maneuvered ourselves in a position of not only being inneffectual, but actually almost forcing Putin to do the opposite of what we want. So hopefully Putin feels he can afford the perception of Sarkozy as diplomatic go-between Russia and Georgia.

Even though Senator Obama was right about Iraq, and Afghanistan, and the place that diplomacy should have in our foreign policy - I would be just as happy if he were wrong. Why?

Because I don't enjoy seeing America disrespected on the world stage. Because I don't enjoy our soldiers being killed, our politics being reduced to one side trying to make the other side look bad at the expense of our nation.

I know it is an election year. I know that both sides want to win. But things are getting too serious to continue to play politics with our national security.

The Democrats and Republicans should call a cease fire on foreign policy and work TOGETHER to return this country to it's proper place of moral authority and leadership in the world.

Guess what? Russia won't listen to the Security Council any more than the US did regarding Iraq. I am very impressed with the professionalism and restraint shown by the US military. They have not attacked randomly civilians, nor have they bombed Georgia to the Stone Age like NATO did to Serbia. I would expect that all military bases and installations are fair game (including all tanks, armored personnel carriers, etc.). Once those are destroyed and/or captured, it will be time to start negotiations.

Mr Putin has a black belt in martial arts (forget judo or sambo). If you are attacked you have to defend yourself until the oponent "taps out". In this case this may mean the uncoditional surrender of the Georgian armed forces. The South Ossetia genocide instigators will be brought to justice (say like "armed combatants"). I would not be surprised if the Georgia president is captured or killed before this conflict is over.

It is interesting that Ms Rice was in Georgia shortly before this all started and that the US has trained the Georgia army up until this conflict began.

It's difficult to see what leverage the weakened and distracted US (courtesy of Bush Administration) can apply (that would not risk serious blow-back consequences -- like McCain's lame-brain G8-ousting idea) without major alliance partners.
