According to Sean Hannity of the "fair and balanced" Fox News Channel the majestic John Mccain should be allowed "a pass" on his extramarital affairs because of his mental instability caused by being shot down and imprisoned in Vietnam, maybe if the underachieving Mr. Mccain would have paid attention in the Naval Academy he would not have been picked off so easily by the enemy, and would not have finished dead last in his class. If it were not for the string pulling of his father and grandfather (both 3 star admirals in the Navy) he would not have been allowed to become a pilot because of his abysmal performance. So I guess that's why the media gives Mr. Mccain a free pass on his lying, flip flopping and general problems dealing with reality, because he's nut's, I must say with a tear in my eye how proud I am of the media for their compassionate treatment of the mentally challenged old dude, way to go guys.

Now think how the US would respond if its citizens on the Mexican side of the border were endangered by actions taken by the Mexican military.

I know we have strategic interests in Georgia, having to do with energy and promoting stability in a country which borders Iran. But how far is the US willing to take this?

I agree with Obama's response to this issue -- that BOTH sides need to stand down and find an alternative means to solve their problems. If we don't start advocating for that now, who knows where the next flare-up will be and how US forces will be dragged into the conflict?

Don't get me wrong. I'm glad the people in Georgia and South Ossetia are getting this stuff. But a cynical side of me wonders if we would have bothered if Georgia 1) didn't have an oil pipeline or 2) a connection to politicians from the same party as the current commander in chief.

And to get really cynical, we could wonder if the response would be so rapid if that president's party wasn't running a candidate to succeed him who decided to exploit this violence for the opportunity to show off his toughness and experience (aka stupidity and Wikipedia skills).

If McCain had been President we would have troops facing the Russians just 50 miles outside Gori now. Obama would be sitting next to Putin and getting his agreement to back off.

Georgian president Mikheil Saakashvili is on to John McCain's games.

Despite the fact that Saakashvili has quite a bit on his mind this week, the leader of the former Soviet state that has been invaded by Russian forces was able to cut through the Republican presidential candidate's rhetoric and get to the heart of the matter: While McCain will say just about anything to get a headline, the Arizona senator is not exactly known for following through -- or even for remembering what he has said.

It is no secret in Washington that McCain has throughout his career in the House and Senate been willing to pontificate -- often at great length -- on topics with which he is entirely unfamiliar. Aides recount stories of times when the senator has agreed to do interviews without even asking what they were about.

McCain's accessibility and charm get him passes from reporters and fellow senators, who rarely hold him to account.

But Saakashvili is taking McCain's statements rather more seriously than Americans do.

McCain told a crowd in Pennsylvania Tuesday that he had spoken with the embattled Georgian, telling the president: "Today, we are all Georgians."

Saakashvili's response: "Yesterday, I heard Sen. McCain say, ‘We are all Georgians now.' Well, very nice, you know, very cheering for us to hear that, but OK, it's time to pass from this. From words to deeds."

The deed Saakashvili would prefer is a move by the United States to take the lead in installing an international peacekeeping force.

"We should realize what is at stake here for Americans," Saakashvili told CNN. "America is losing the whole region."

Of course, if McCain were to propose such a move, he would open a whole new debate about reopening the Cold War -- or perhaps something a bit hotter -- and it is unlikely that American voters, already wary about our foreign entanglements, would be very enthused about a perilous mission in The Caucasus.

So Saakashvili should probably be satisfied with the words he has gotten from John McCain.

That may by unsettling. But Saakashvili can comfort himself with the recognition that, of late, this is all McCain has been giving Americans.

Yes, part of this is Bush's fault for not building a decent relationship with Russia while playing the agressor in the middle east. It does not take much common sense to understand that with someone like Putin in charge who wants Russia to be a world power once again you don't give the guy excuses to invade other countries by doing so yourself because of a false report of WMDs. Where is Bush's integrity when calling for Putin and the Russins to back off after invading Iraq and seeing thousands of Iraqis killed. Putin himself made such a comment to partly express and justify his disgust with Bush. We invade and try to nation build in the middle east then criticize Russia for invading and nation building in another part of the world.

Not covered yet Lib. For now we have McCain sabre rattling and condemining the Russians while promoting a policy that keeps U.S. troops in Iraq for 200 years. Oh, but Mccain has backed off and now says we would withdraw earlier? So which comment/position do you think that Putin and Russia heard and uses to justify his and his county's movements. The 200 year comment by Mccain or the withdraw in 6 months possibility comment by Mccain? I'll give you a guess.

Because our troops are either dead or still being maintained in Iraq you asshole don't you think that raises the confidence level a bit for Putin and Russia to spread their wings a bit? Of course Bush has a hand in this latest agression by Russia. What do they have to fear? The likes of a jerk watching the Olympics while Georgians die at the hands of the Russians and another sabre rattler threatening Russia here at home (McCain) and who can't back up that macho talk because he wants our troops in Iraq for the next 200 years?

The probability that the Georgian government attacked South Ossetia without the at least tacit approval of the United States is fairly small. The military strike, which apparently caused many casualties and much damage to property had all of the earmarks of the Bush/Cheney Administration in its utter stupidity.
