Interestingly enough I watched a full discussion with Obama but 15 minutes into the part with McCain I was so disgusted I turned the TV off and took my dog out for a walk. This was not to be a campaign stop with a bunch of abbreviated stump speeches, in fact Warren reminded Obama of that at the beginning and Obama did a pretty good job of sticking to that premise. McCain, on the other hand, appeared to give one abbreviated stump speech after another without any repercussions.

It may be just me but isn't it time McCain stopped talking about when he was a POW?

What really was clear about this forum was how McCain constantly referred to his prison years and war. In my mind I eliminated those years and wondered whether the rest of McCains story is just one big blank.

He cares so much about Americans that he has vetoed all of the bills we need to make things more equitable. His war stances frighten me.

I was annoyed by his pandering need to campaign rather than show his spirituality. He shows to me that he has a lack of that thereof.

I had a sneaking suspicion that he was leaked some of the questions as they were being asked of Obama. He was to quick to answer and we know he is not quick or very smart.

My analysis for McCain -

McCain was good in givng succinct answers. However, you could tell he was quoting lines form his stump speech. The drill here, drill now line seemed out of place. My overall impression was that he was was saying what he thought the crowd wanted to here rather than have a truly candid discussion. I do give him credit for citing his first marriage, but he could have elaborated more. It was a chance for him to show humility in a mistake and I think he missed it.

The supreme justice answer was complete pandering. A judge should be someone that interprets the constitution without a liberal/conservative bias. Simply to state the four that are considered liberal, showed that he was just trying to get an applause. IMHO it made him seem that he would only appoint judges on their political affiliation.

My biggest issue came with his answers about foreign affairs. He seemed way to eager to use military force on everything. War is a necessity in some circumstances, but it should always be considered as a last resort. He never gave examples on how he would try to make war a last option that had to be based on only the most extreme circumstances.

Didn't he just tell us all last week that he didn't see Tom Ridge's being Pro Choice as a reason not to pick him as VP?
Did ANYONE get the sense that McCain was in no way unprepared for the questions that were asked?
In some cases he answered them before they were asked.
I really did not feel this event was as "on the up and up" as the media and the Pastor would like us to believe.
McCain was "on display" barking out stump speech lines and ideas. He did not appear thoughtful (except possible when he talked for 2 seconds about his failed marriage).
He seemed more like George Bush than ever.

So, was prison camp a little less torturous than we had believed. Any man with sense would have gone on and looked for ways to help get the others out. He did not need to go into detail about the failed marriage because the facts are out there. I am a born again Christian and a republican. I know what John McCain should have said but did not about being save and Jesus. His answer was not that of someone who has a relationship with Jesus, in fact he moved away from that as soon as possible. He may have sounded commanding to you and others but what I saw was someone coached up to toe the party line and rhetoric of the same old politics as usual. I also saw a man whose Christianity was on display as well of his sincereness,authenticity and humility. These are the types of things we have missed in our leadership and should have more of instead of the cowboy mentality that has illserved us for 7.5 years. I heard McCain saw that the office of the President could be used a s a bully pulpit. Let us face the fact that this administration has destroyed whatever leverage we had to use against Russia and that we are powerless to do anything against Russia with our military strained on two fronts. John McCain and the republicans might fool some of us as in the past but not this repub. I am voting democrat for a change from the crooked policy of the repubs and its war machine.

Why I Will Not Vote for John McCain

As some of you might know, John McCain is a long-time acquaintance of mine that goes way back to our time together at the U.S. Naval Academy and as Prisoners of War in Vietnam. He is a man I respect and admire in some ways. But there are a number of reasons why I will not vote for him for President of the United States.

People often ask if I was a Prisoner of War with John McCain. My answer is always "No - John McCain was a POW with me." The reason is I was there for 8 years and John got there 2 ½ years later, so he was a POW for 5 ½ years. And we have our own seniority system, based on time as a POW.

John's treatment as a POW:

1) Was he tortured for 5 years? No. He was subjected to torture and maltreatment during his first 2 years, from September of 1967 to September of 1969. After September of 1969 the Vietnamese stopped the torture and gave us increased food and rudimentary health care. Several hundred of us were captured much earlier. I got there April 20, 1965 so my bad treatment period lasted 4 1/2 years. President Ho Chi Minh died on September 9, 1969, and the new regime that replaced him and his policies was more pragmatic. They realized we were worth a lot as bargaining chips if we were alive. And they were right because eventually Americans gave up on the war and agreed to trade our POW's for their country. A damn good trade in my opinion! But my point here is that John allows the media to make him out to be THE hero POW, which he knows is absolutely not true, to further his political goals.

John was offered, and refused, "early release." Many of us were given this offer. It meant speaking out against your country and lying about your treatment to the press. You had to "admit" that the U.S. was criminal and that our treatment was "lenient and humane." So I, like numerous others, refused the offer. This was obviously something none of us could accept. Besides, we were bound by our service regulations, Geneva Conventions and loyalties to refuse early release until all the POW's were released, with the sick and wounded going first.

I for one am amazed at the bias that first read is giving to John McCain. You point out that Rev. Warren warned Barack Obama not to stump speech, but McCain was not warned and gave several stump speech answers, esp. his "drill here drill now". He has not been called out for this, and worse, praised for it. He was alot more political, not giving answers to several questions, but changing the subject to his stump speeches. He never did answer the rich question, just gave a vague, general if you have a home, job and kids, your rich....get real, alot of middle class are having a hard time keeping their home, job and kids in school. This last definetly convinced me that his millions, jet, and multiple houses has left him without a clue as to ordinary middle class americans feel or think.

To me, John McCain's answers were shallow and evasive. Mr. Warren never called him on it while he constantly told Barack Obama that he (Warren) did not want Obama's stump speech. Yet, all of the answers I heard from Mr. McCain were from his stump speech. McCain shot off his answers without really taking time to think about them. On the other hand, when Senator Obama answered the questions, he took a few moments to think about them. Granted, he could have been more concise but I felt he actually answered the questions.

Also, McCain calling people "my friends" when he doesn't know them is downright annoying to me. I don't care what anyone says, Senator McCain came off as patronizing to me.

If anyone was watching this forum to learn anything about Senator McCain's true feelings about his faith, I'm sure they came away sorely disappointed.

I think the most important outcome here will be to give "values voters" permission to crawl out from under the wreckage of the Bush administration. Many people I know personally are today ashamed of having been intimidated into reelecting Bush in 2004 by politically connected pastors, who sullied their brand-name by associating it with war, torture, indifference, corruption and hypocracy. Internet comments from actual religious voters seem genuinely relieved that their own conscience is in play again.

Seeing Obama in this light will also help less-than-attentive Christians stand up to people who spread deliberate lies about him. Obama was bearing witness to the message of salvation. That is a core requirement of the actual faith supposedly espoused by the conservative "religious" political machine. A more fundamental and non-negotiable requirement is commandment number eight: "Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor."

By contrast, Obama gave measured, well thought-out answers..whether they would please the audience or not, and showed his intellectual, sincere personality. He treated the situation as it was meant to be..a religiously-based question and answer period, not the opportunity to say "what a great president I'll make"....unlike McCain who came right out and said what a great president he would make.
One was sincere, one was rehearsed and unsincere.

What intrigued me most was when McCain was asked the same question as Obama about merit pay for teachers, which was a three-part question. Pastor Rick had no more than begun to ask the question when McCain quickly replied something along the lines of, "Yes and yes and they should be helped to find other jobs". Those were appropriate answers to a three-part question, but the only problem was that the question had not yet been asked. Warren was visibly startled by the exchange. The impression was clearly given that someone had either permitted McCain to watch the Obama segment, or they had provided him with the questions in advance. Unless both participants were given the same assistance one would have to question the integrity of the process. The degree to which Warren was surprised left no doubt that he was unaware of any such hanky-panky, but in a Forum on Faith, if that in fact happened, that would be something of a commentary on character relative to Senator McCain, would it not? It smacks of wanting something so badly that one is willing to bend the rules a bit.

I watched this extraordinary interview and have to say that he second half, this with Senator John McCain, was far more relaxed, sympathetic, and — overall, favoritive of the senator from Arizona than it was of the senator from Illinois.
To be sure, the interview with Senator Obama was conciliatory, and the questions fair enough. But the tone of, and the treatment of the questions offered Senator McCain were of such a different tenor, that the fairness of the event, overall, is called into question. The segment questioning Senator Obama repeatedly demanded no “stump” speeches be made from this forum; the segment interviewing Senator McCain permitted his speechification at nearly every opportunity.

I was very disappointed with Pastor Rick Warren Balanced of the Religious Form he held with the Presidential Candidates.

I hope that many journalist and network commentatrs saw how to conduct a debate with decency and professionalism at its best.This was supposed to be an interview and Obama did not use the format to make political speeches like McCain but followed the script that Warren wanted to accomplish, which was to know more about the candidates personal conduct.
Items like being prisoner of war, rhetoric about Russia and Georgia was not the place for this forum. And for the record McCain was so upset over the failure of his marriage that he left wife number #1 who was recovering from a disability and married a very rich wife #2 before the divorce was even finalized. I rest my case

I watched the Forum hoping to hear more substance from Senator McCain and more Soul from Senator Obama. I got the soul, but once again was left with no more than a pathetic attempt on Senator McCain's part to entertain the audience and viewers with more of the "SAME" tired old stories and stump stuff that does nothing more than make it obvious he struggles with substance and truth. He once again exhibited he has no "new" plan for improving and healing America in its troubled times. McCain's strong similarities to Bush on every front are frightening. Some say he has the experience edge, the problem is the experience he shows proves that with a McCain Presidency we would have nothing more than four more years of the same problematic way of thinking that got us to where we are today. We don't need another "Entertainer in Chief" we need someone who can set a different tone and have the intelligence, demeanor and character to take our country in a different direction. We live in a different time, different World and we need a different kind of President.

I guess Candy Crowley was the only one who noticed that McCain appeared to know the Supreme Court question ahead of time. And many of the C-Span Callers are saying that John McCain new the questions ahead of time also.

I am not sure how I feel with this increasing fusion between church and state. But I am 21st century enough to understand a man’s faith encourages his believe therefore influencing is judgement. Still if Mrs. Clinton had been the Democratic nominee would there have been a need for the Saddleback forum?

This forum was based on the concept of a conversation between two friends. The forum was to exemplify the personalities of the candidates in a position of stewardship and offering an insight to which candidate would you trust. However, Mr. McCain’s appeared once more has simply of another politician.

Mr. McCain had plenty of heartfelt stories but where was his vision? What is his vision for a nation instead of his stern hand for America? It was like watching an okay student on examination day being lucky that all the questions were those that he just happened to know the answers. I admit he was personable and he surely passed. But he was not ‘my friend.’ I knew nothing more about him that isn’t already flooded in the media.

Mr. Obama appeared more comfortable and projected an appeal commanding the audience’s attention. He listened to Rev. Rick, reflected on his answers without avoiding direct questions. Why didn’t Rev. Rick stop Mr. McCain’s political stump since this was to be a conversation with his friend? Friends talk from the heart and not through a speech. Rev. Rick was far more engaging with Mr. Obama and was simply respectful of Mr. McCain telling more of his ‘old-man’ stories.

Mr. McCain’s weakest trait is his inability to listen or answering nuance questions. He had prepared a steady agenda that he was determined to express, even before a question was put to him. My friend, my friend, my friend, my friend over and over again was far less sincere and more reaching than all of Mr. Obama’s authoritative “um-well you-knows.”

Neither Senator was in his top form or perhaps it was just the nature of the forum.

This whole forum was a joke. Members of the audience paid between $500 and $2000 to attend. It wasn't a substantive issues forum--it was a fundraiser.

McCain ? What a stand up guy...... A "failed marriage" is his greatest failure. Code words for it didn't work out rather than " I left her because she became a paraplegic and I was looking for someone younger who could walk" Watching McCain last night was like watching a full hour on The Tonight Show. If this was about revealing himself as to who he is......His Jokes got in the way. I can't really stand to watch him much, but last night worked for him
because he kept hammering his stump speech. Rick Warren did not do a good job of getting him to answer the questions. I hope that the moderators at the debates better.

Even though I am a registered Republican and a Christian, John McCain does not speak for me and many people I know. His world view is looking backward instead of looking forward. What most sent a shiver up my spine was his answer to which Supreme court justices he would not have put on the court. If you want the liberties and freedoms granted to citizens in the Constitution to be gradually taken away, then McCain is your man. While some thought his answers were swift and direct, I see them as acting before thinking. This is what we have done for the last eight years. Is America better off financially and politically as a result? The majority of people have answered that emphatically as a NO! I was even more amazed that McCain was answering questions before they were asked. America cannot afford to stay on the path on which we currently find ourselves. We are at a crucial crossroads in our history. We now live in a global society and must conduct ourselves as a member of that society, not conduct ourselves as the solitary leader of that society. If we continue to act in this manner, it will ultimately be our downfall.

How many more commercial ran with Senator Obama compare to Senator McCain

McCain appeared to get to the Supreme Court question before it was even asked

Why were the questions framed different when Warren promised that they would not be.

Why is Warren asking McCain about the Republic of Georgia, he did not ask Barack these questions?

The Pastor's single intent was to afford McCain a free press while attempting to undermined Senator Obama

Senator Obama you have stop trusting everyone. The Pastor supported Bush Twice so he is clearly a man without good judge of character.
