The scary and sad thing is that if these threats continue, Obama will be paralyzed by his race. If he speaks out, publicly condemns threats on HIS LIFE and the life of his family, surely there will be those who will label him a "race-baiter" and "complainer." It is for the same reason that he and his campaign could not speak out for the safety of campaign volunteers in the face of overt and even violent racism during the primary that was uncovered by the Washington Post. They actually had to down-play it or risk coming off as obsessed with race.

It shows that we've come a long way in this country when a black man can have a real shot at being elected president. However, it shows just how far we have to go when that man has to wonder if he will even survive the ordeal.

It also doesn't surprise me that the protester ou spoke with hadn't a clue what he was fighting for. What is there to fight for? Protest the war? The Dems want to stop it! Protest about Clinton, when they're making a deal to be good soldiers and still keep their dignity. So what's to protest? This kid doesn't know, and he's probably not alone.

More has come out about this. It sounds like these four were intent on trying to assassinate Obama, but fortunately were more bumbling than professional about it. The whole thing started falling apart because one of the four was driving erratically, and got pulled over.

I don't know about anyone else, but if I was driving to the scene of some horrendous crime I was about to commit, I'd at least try to stay in my lane and close to the speed limit. Fortunately, one of these four didn't think of that.

What struck me as odd is their rifles were sighted in for 750 yards, according to what was reported about one confession. And the reported plan was to hit Obama during his acceptance speech. That's in a stadium and to be that far away, you have to be outside of but close to the stadium. Unless there's a highrise building right next to Mile High or planned to hitch a ride on the Goodyear blimp, it makes no sense.

As a Gen-Xer, I did not go through the turmoil of the 1960s, but my family did. I thought America was past this crap, this hate. I have served for this country for 17 years as a Soldier, living the Army Values that recognize the worth and value of all Americans no matter race or creed. These inbred haters are not what I stand for.

There has been talk of possible assasination attempts on Sen Obama for a long time, and I feel that have been fed by the vile coming from the right wing nuts(Coulter, Hannity, Oreilly). Its time that Sen McCain step up and show that he is above what is coming out of his party and show he is still running for all Americans, not just the WASPS and wealthy. He lost this Independant, former Republican, servicemans vote awhile ago, but he may still have my respect if he still stands for the ideals that I know he learned from his family and his service.

I pray that God keep our candidates, both Sen Obama and Sen McCain, and their families safe. I have seen enough killing and hate.

I would love to hear candidates on both sides of the political fence start speaking up against violent opposition in this nation. We have the right to free speech AND we have the right to bear arms, but apparently some folks out there are continuing to try and combine the two.

Assassinating people whose opinions do not match your own does not kill the ideas they represent; generally, it accomplishes the exact opposite.

Please, America: speak up; be heard; vote. Any combination of the three is a fantastic way to take part in the process. But attempting to fatally silence someone simply on the grounds that you do not agree with them? That is most certainly NOT in accord with the freedoms we prize.

Forget relying merely on the Patriot Act to solve this. It's the responsibility which falls to us all.

A Patriot is a person who serves their country to better it. Somebody who puts that service and their country before themselves. All men and women who serve in the armed forces are patriots, but so are those people in the state department who travel oversees never getting to see their families, so are the men and women in law enforcement who walk into the unknown everyday to protect their community and so are politicians who run for national office.
While Obama may be at a greater risk from lunatics like this every national politician faces these types of dangers. Most presidential assassins and would be assassins didn't have specific hatred for the men they tried to kill as much as they wanted greater recognition for their cause or themselves. The man who tried to kill FDR was an anarchist, the man who tried to kill Reagan was in love with Jody Foster, one of the women who tried to kill Ford was a follower of Charles Manson. The list goes on and on -
John McCain is a patriot, nobody has ever questioned it, but here folks is proof that Sen. Barack Obama is also a patriot, as is his wife. These people daily walk into the unknown because they have a belief that they can improve this country,and a desire to do it. You may disagree with their ideas, fine that is your right. But you can not argue with the fact that Sen. Obama loves his country and is willing to put that love before personal safety in an attempt to improve the country.

This has been my deepest fear for the last 19 months.

Talk about 2 steps forward and 3 steps back...if this were to be realized our nation will explode into racial riots that would make the Rodney King ordeal look like a kids party. And being a white man from the Sout' Side of Chicago, I'm sure this place will see the worst.

For everyone's sake, I hope there are no more kooks out there, or we're in for major racial chaos.
