Great first night!

Carville's missed point aside, last night accomplished exactly what it was supposed to.

Ted Kennedy helped push everyone together and Michelle really improved her image and that of her husband.

Stellar first night... McCain can go do stupid human tricks tomorrow on Letterman. Side-show McCain is anti-climactic no matter what he does at this point.

I thought Day 1 of the convention was Awesome. I was completely disenthralled with MSNBC coverage and the fact that they didn't show all of the speeches. That was a huge disappointment. Further, Ann Curry was just plain appalling with her, "but what about PUMA - can you really achieve Unity? Aren't half your constituency bitter..." crap. That was by far the LOW point. I plan to watch PBS or CSPAN tonight. Unfortunately, I had tivoed it last night and there wasn't a way to 'recover' since I didn't start watching until 9:30p. Life with three kids is definitely challenging during this convention - Ha Ha

I thought Day 1 was great!

What wasn't so great was listening to media pundits complaining about a lack of attacks against John McCain.

Here's a friendly reminder: You guys are REPORTERS - so REPORT what did happen instead of WHINE about what DIDN'T happen. The convention is not designed to ENTERTAIN reporters and it is not a boxing match for you to keep score on.

It must be a sad existence to be so very jaded.

Good first day for the Democrats. Those two presentations - Ted Kennedy and Michelle Obama - were powerful. In Kennedy's case, almost heroic.

Regardless of what you think of Kennedy and his politics, its noteworthy when we see a person for whom an election means more than his own health.

Is it me or do they totally disrespect Mika on Morning Joe? They never let her finish a sentence, they talk over her like her opinion does not count and Joe makes rude jokes about her and she just sits there with a blank look on her face, like she is scared to really speak back to him.
I know she is his ‘Side Kick’, but does that mean he can kick her (back) side at his whim?

Just my observation…

He seems to be becoming the great Class President that graduated and doesn't like his newfound role in college...
so he gets mad when he comes back starts planning his younger girlfriend's prom by saying all the things that he did great... and when they don't listen he gets PO'd... and storms out telling his girlfriends to also...

Teddy spoke and barely left a dry eye in the house. WOW !!!!!! He is a great man Teddy K. Michelle spoke and dispite the stupid comentary about all the black women crying,it was all the women in the house crying,heck I almost cried it was really a great speech. MSNBC I think Chris Matthews is a nice guy but him and that minster went way overboard on there discussion on slavery, drawn from Michelle's speech.That minster was so full of himself that he almost slobbered on hisself as he spoke. I find him to be almost as offensive as Reberand Joe Watkins. As a black christian man I find that neither of these men have much God in them and are used to validate Republican talking points by the media saying,see we have a black man saying it. Thank you Keith Olberman for bringing thise guys back to earth last night with that smooth transition back to the Brady Bunch. Michelle Obama gave the speech I expected her to give: long on emotion, short on facts. Her narrative betrayed her philosophy-socialism good, capitalism, bad. It is everlastingly amazing to me that socialists believe themselves to be 'good', others of means to be 'bad', and the poor to be 'noble'. Unfortunately, they see the poor as a class, and not as human beings like themselves; therefore, if any one of 'them' dare occupy the same space, they are dispatched forthwith. The hypocracy of this woman speaking passionately about a college student, working to provide healthcare for his sick sibling, while she herself embarked on a program to rid University of Chicago hospitals of the very poor she proclaims to be working for, is breathtaking. Heaven forfend that her husband actually get elected.

- Caroline Kennedy
- The Ken Burns Tribute
- Senator Kennedy himself
- Michelle Obama's speech, as moving a speech as I have ever heard; watching her up there on that stage spoke volumes about our country in the 21st Century.
- Keith Olbermann & Chris Matthews after her speech, each speaking so eloquently about Michelle's family history going back to South Carolina. And each speaking quite eloquently as well about the path our country has taken to get to this point in time. You were both superb. Very moving words from both of you.

The Democratic Party, this is what we have been waiting for. Senator Ted Kennedy must be awfully proud. He's been there every step of the way.

Nice night all together. Just listened to some guy on CNN say it was a wasted opportunity to attack the Repubs. I am so sick of that mentality. It was so upbeat, from John Legend's beautiful song to Michelle Obama's speech.

We may lose this election and the country will be worse off for it, but at least we will have our dignity. Like it says in the Bible "What good is it to inherit the world if you had to forfeit your soul?"

It was absolutely electrifying to see and hear the "Lion of the Senate", Ted Kennedy last night. He represents the true themes of the Democratic party and I hope the former Hillary supporters will see that we must unify behind Sen. Obama.

Last week, right after watching the USA squeak by Spain in the Olympics, C-Span aired the keynote speakers of former Dem conventions. I was moved to tears by the words of the late, great Congresswoman Barbara Jordan from Texas, who spelled out the platform of the Democratic party. (1) Equality for all and priviledge for none; (2) Provide a way for all citizens to be involved in the government; (3) All people, not just interest groups, have the real voice of government; (4)Work to remove all obstacles of race, sex, and economic conditions; (5) Be innovative, but do not reject our traditions that is the promise of America; (6) None of the above are negotiable!

Ted Kennedy, Joe Biden, and now Barack Obama are standing on the Dem platform. The Democratic party is a party of inclusion and we are all family. Together we can make John McCain and his failed policies a nightmare diverted. Let's get busy!

i've never been one moved by words, until last night.

The final two speeches of the evening surpassed anything i could have foreseen, and i was moved by the tone and conviction that both speakers used in their delivery.

i have to say that all of the evenings speakers were excellent, i was especially moved by Jesse Jackson Jr.'s speach, and found myself drawn to the Dem's platform as i heard more about it.

congrats on pulling off a positive opening, that moved those of us who took the time to watch all of the speakers. I hope that the tone and message of the first night continues through the rest of the convention, and that the negative backstabbing politics are avoided until next week.

one thing that i noticed in watching the coverage online: the number of women, minority, and female minority speakers was astounding. i saw a handful of old, white males speaking early on, and i was forced to grab my wife and inform her when the first white male speaker proudly announced that he was gay.

That is truly America, and i love America!

I just have to say the best speeches of the evening were Ted Kennedy, Michelle Obama and Claire McCaskill (sp) in that order. They were just amazing.

And the Obama's daughters are just beautiful. I have three daughters myself and I made the two oldest (youngest is only three) watch Michelle's speech. They need something more to look up to than just Hannah Montana and since there are so few young, black, female role models out there this was just a golden opportunity for them to see black women as more than what they see in magazines and on TV. I really hope that my girls took her speech to heart and are striving for more than just being famous for the sake of being famous. (although my oldest has said she wants to be a teacher....here's hoping she means that and will work for it).

What was that? MSNBC's coverage of the first night at the convention was disgusting. I would think that after being there for several days now with all your spot reporting, that you people would at least have checked that the sound feed from the convention was working - thanks for missing the first minute of Pelosi's speech. And what the hell is the deal with reporting from some glass top desk on a rooftop across the highway from the arena - didn't you guys get a pass to get in the place? And all your time spent with panel discussions - instead of being IN THE ARENA - I didn't even know when the convention started. I guess you'd rather hear yourselves talk. And when you did get around to plugging in the sound from inside, you had Anne Curry playing some version of Jerry Springer pushing for a fight between the Hillary and Obama people. She kept dogging Speaker Pelosi about Hillary to the point Ms. Pelosi literaly told her that she'd like to stop so that she could listen to President Carter. And then she dogged Mr. Carter. YOUR COVERAGE SUCKED!!!!! If it were the first moonwalk, I guess you people would have sat there with your panel, waxing philosophically about how surreal it must be to walk on the moon, and describe to your viewers what you saw on the monitors. Horrible reporting - you guys get an F-. Oh, and by the way - by what I seen through CNN, the convention was BORING and a total waste of a full night of sticking it to the Bush/McCain group. WHAT A BUCH OF WUSSIES!!!!!!

The beauty of this Country is the collective minds of its people. Over the past 8 years we've gone absolutely nowhere. And it's easy to throw blame around, but when you strip in down to what's really been going on in our great nation, you quickly realize that "We The People" are the cause of this. We are stagnant because of us. WE DID THIS!!! We are a democracy... We vote people in... We're responsible for the predicament of this country because we choose to pick out of fear rather than for the best interest of our Country. We are slowly becoming a nation of nothing. Where we were once strong, we are now laughed at and frowned upon... And we take it lying down, accepting things at face value simply because someone says so... All that was sacrificed for the greater good of our futures are proving to have been in vain...

I looked at how some folks said that Obama lost Rick Warren's forum conversation because he was too thorough, expressive, detailed, and intelligent... WOW!!! What have we come to where we expect anything less??? The integrity and intelligence of this Country has been seriously insulted... We choose to become a failing and falling nation all for the sake of stubbornness and ignorance... It's like there's a dying breed of courage in America.

"We The People" choose our paths... We decide the direction of our Country, and we now stand at a folk in the road... We decide what our tomorrows hold.

The bottom line is, we're either going to wake up November 5th with Barack Obama as our President, willing, and able to lead us back down the path of greatness, or We're going to wake up with John McCain as our President, bringing the same failed policies of the past 8 years... Do realize though, that we are the ones who decide this... If y'all can live with that, then we'll all have no choice but to...

It's rather interesting actually to see how on the surface so much has changed over the last 200+ years, yet deeply rooted remains the same ignorant, prejudiced, tainted mindset of so many in this Country... {Just calling a spade a spade}

It was wonderful to see Sen. Kennedy. He looked great, but you could tell he was a little shaky.
I thought Michelle knocked it out of the park. She was cordial, classy and looked lovely.

I'll be glad when Hillary exits stage left tonight, I am so sick of this woman and the media bias that goes along with her.

I don't know what the media has to gain from all the slanted coverage of this convention, but if Barack loses it'll be on the media's head.

I was overjoyed with the tone and content of Michelle Obama's message last evening. I had my 19 year old son and 17 year old daughter watch the speech in its entirety with me so we could experience this historical moment together. I am a white, middle aged, single mom and have supported Obama from day one. Michele reinforced my view of the country and the way it should be. I thought the speech was spot on.

My eyes were filled with tears as Ted Kennedy came on stage last night. He is the true leader of the Democratic Party and we so need his wisdom, guidance, compassion and leadership during these trying times in America.

My goodness, Michelle Obama, is the pride of Chicago's southside this morning. Her story is truly an American story. And Sasha and Malia stole the show with their unrehearsed words, "Hi, Daddy! We love you Daddy!" I would just love to see the White House filled with the laughter of children again -- something America has not seen since Caroline and John-John.

I am an enthusiastic supporter of Obama/Biden, but last night was Ted's, Michelle's and the Obama children's night. God bless them. I am so proud they belong to us, America.

The Obama's are trying so hard to make themselves out as "Average Americans", but, they just aren't. Obama, for all of his skills, continually comes off as this elitist arrogant snob. He has an answer for everything, and he knows better then anyone else on every subject. He talks like a lawyer, pausing after a question so he can come up with the answer he expects his adience wants to hear. And for some reason, a lot of his supporters just love being led around by the nose by this man. Both Barack and Michelle have tons of education. But it appears that they are both just "Book Smart", and not "Life Smart".

Senator Kennedy seemed to be in good spirits during his speech. There was the allusion to his speech in 1980 Democratic convention. Since there was no attempt to run this year, it didn't sound like he was trying to upset Obama.

It was good to see Michelle and girls take center stage to say that they are a normal family. Given what is going on, it is unlikely that they can really be called normal at this time; a member of the family is running for president isn't normal.

Michelle Obama did an amazing job Monday night. Those of us that have been paying attention know that the warm, loving, intelligent woman on stage is the REAL Michelle Obama, and always has been. This woman is working- alongside her husband- to make this world a better place for all of our children.

The Obamas have been saying all along that if you work hard and be the best person you can be, you can succeed in this country. There is nothing "scary" or "radical" in that. Like Chris Matthews said (rather eloquently) last night:

"People need to open their minds, open their hearts."

Good Old Ted would have had me at hello and I was truly impressed that after suffering through such a medical malady not too long ago he was able to get up on stage and give a great stirring speech. It was great to see the Liberal Lion of the Senate give another great speech and rally the base for Obama.

Michelle also gave a stirring speech. I informed my Daughter that she should download it and watch it with her Daughters as I thought Michelle gave a great speech about Family Values and Moms and Daughters.

All I know is, if disgruntled Hillary supporters ruin Barack's chances at becoming President, their girl will NEVER get elected for national office. What they fail to recognize is, as much as we need their support now, they will need our future support, and Obama's supporters will NEVER forget.

If Senator Obama loses the election to Senator McCain, won't the blame be placed squarely on Senator and former President Clinton's shoulders? Wouldn't that put a crimp in any future plans she might have to run for President? If her supporters decline to support Senator Obama and he loses, would the Obama faction of the party be willing to support her in the future? Seems to me, if for nothing more than her own self interest, she would be well advised to work hard for Senator Obama's election.

I was so moved by Michelle Obama what a powerful presentation of her life, family and love for her country! I am convinced that she will be an awesome first lady, she is most gifted and intelligent. The Obama children are a breath of fresh air, they are beautiful and gracious. One can clearly see the love of this family and understand their humble beginings. Senator Edward Kennedy was powerful as well, he captured my heart with his strenght and determination, this man is gold!

I love Chris and Keith and so looked forward to watching your coverage. Sorry to say that it lasted only until Ann Curry's interview of Pelosi. You have continually stated that this convention is to help the American Public better get to know the candidate Obama, but you seemed more interested in hearing yourselves talk than to letting the viewers hear the speakers. I would have liked to hear Obama's Sister yet you didn't deem that important, and Curry's constant harping about the Clinton issue made me sick. I watched the rest of the night on PBS as I will the rest of the convention. Raise the bar, folks..more coverage, less commenatry!

A lot of republican smears portray Obama supporters as if we're mesmirized by a rock star, cult leader, or Messiah. As a 60+ year old white woman, I can only speak for myself. First, I am not blind to his flaws, and disagree with some of his ideas. However, I think he is a genuinely decent person who is more than qualified to be an excellent president. I feel we've invested in him, and my feelings are similar to the pride I feel for my sons when I see what fine men they have become. I also feel a pride in our country for realizing what a special person he is and how well he represents ALL of us.
