Republicans have touting Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's service as "commander in chief" of the state's National Guard as proof of her foreign policy chops. Democrats and other observers countered that while a governor can command the Guard in local emergencies, he or she has no say at all when it comes to foreign deployments.

As it turns out -- according to both conservatives and liberals -- U.S. governors were stripped of crucial discretion over their National Guard units at home for a good part of Palin's first term.

A clause from National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2007 amended the Insurrection Act, handing President George W. Bush expanded power to declare martial law and take over Guard troops without a governor's assent. Passed by the Congress and signed by the president more than a month before Palin took office in December 2006, critics on both sides of the aisle deemed it a federal power grab.

The Palin nomination is audacious and problematic on so many levels:

1. We know we cannot trust anything in any of the 'positive' messages put out by McCain about her since his team obviously doesn't even know her.
2. How can a guy claim to be a 'maverick' when, in fact he is, as the kids now say, the 'bitch' of the Extreme Right?
3. Same legitimate question is raised about who is running the show here when the guy basically abdicates his decisionmaking power on perhaps the most important decision he has to make.
4. And, the legitimate question: To whom has he deferred this power? His aides? Have you seen that squirrelly little Tucker Bounds---check out Campbell Brown munching on him for lunch---I saw it live a couple of nights ago and it was outstanding. Or is it one of the guys on the Georgian, or Colombian payrolls? We should at least know who we're voting for.
5. What 'extreme' church does this woman attend? Let's do a little Jeremiah Wright-style vetting there. My guess is these folks make the conservative preacher McCain was begging to endorse earlier this year look mainstream.
6. A 'conservative' believes in the separation of church and state, a key tenet of American government. Extremists don't. In Afghanistan, they are called Taliban.
7. I do not think that anyone wants a president who thinks that God's will directs the Iraq war.

There's a start.

Politically, I see no way that having the attention on this kooky bimbo for a week makes the election of John McCain more likely. It is insulting to have a week of war mongering on TV. McCain is a fraud and so is Palin. Where is McCain's Executive Experience? IF Palin is more qualified Obama, then she's also more qualified than McCain. McCain is a Senator, not a governor. Plus he's a washington insider, how will he be the one to bring outsider change. Palin would have to be the one to bring outsider change, plus she's the one with the "executive experience". With that said, it should be the Palin-McCain ticket, not the McCain-Palin ticket. Obama/Palin -Outsiders to bring change to Washington (Rockstar vs. Rockstar). Biden/McCain -Insiders to reinforce their ideas with knowledgeable credentials (Politician vs. Politician). The Democrats got it right AGAIN! The Repubs have it backwards as always.
