All candidates employ speechwriters, but Barack remains the primary author of his speeches. Repeating a lie over and over doesn’t make it true.

In a dangerously complex and rapidly changing world we need to lead with our very best and brightest. The truth is that John McCain, for all his personal courage, is not the sharpest tool in the shed. He graduated fifth from the bottom out of his class of 899 students at the Annapolis Naval Academy. Sarah Palin was by all accounts a thoroughly average student. Barack Obama distinguished himself academically among the very brightest people in the nation. He doesn’t need anyone to put words in his mouth.

You would think Republicans everywhere would celebrate Barack’s story. He fits exactly the American dream they love to talk about; a guy who pulls himself up by his bootstraps and rises to the top strictly on merit. He didn’t have a daddy who was an admiral or marry a beer heiress with a fortune. He wasn’t plucked from political obscurity at the last minute from on high and turned into an instant celebrity.

In the course of this campaign Obama has proven himself to be a disciplined and extremely competent manager, an inspiring leader, and a brilliant strategist. He has consistently been ahead of the curve on foreign policy issues. These are the skills this country so desperately needs at this moment in our history. Forget about the guy or gal you would like to have a beer with. We tried that already and it hasn’t worked out so well. We have a rare opportunity here to vote for a candidate uniquely suited to the times, thanks to the good people of Iowa. Don’t be fooled by the chorus of negativity this time around. The stakes are much too high in this election to settle for mediocrity.
First thoughts: A tie ballgame

Can somebody/anybody provide a rationale explanation for the 20-point swing amongst white women in the past week according to the ABC/Wash Post poll? More freedom? I would think so.

Keith Olbermann is gaining in popularity because he sees the disastrous direction this country has taken over the last 8 years. That’s the difference between him and so-called other journalists/commentators at NBC/MSNBC. They all seem to only care about access. About their livelihoods. So they repeat talking points over and over. If Keith was a far left wing commentator, he wouldn’t bother inviting Chuck Hagel on to his program, he wouldn’t bother recognizing Richard Lugar's positions. Anti-war republicans.

If Senator Obama is elected president, Keith will hold his feet to the fire just like he does with everyone else. Why can’t you see this?

Keith cares more about the future of America than he does about kissing up to the right wing. Can’t say that about too many people journalists/commentators anymore. It's too bad. This is an important election in case you hadn't noticed.

Boston Globe nailed it: Sarah Palin is a reminder of Spiro Agnew, who went after the anti-war establishment, who gave firey speeches, who in essence did a lot of the attacking for Richard Nixon.
And then he got nailed for his dishonesty.

Soccer moms/silent majority and their crazy positions. They are so skillful in influencing the voting patterns of average Americans, and they are good at playing whatever political card they feel will help them. For example, McCain's campaign platform was almost entirely experience; after they saw that their platform isn't working, they stole Obama's change platform to suit themselves. Now it will be itneresting if voters can see through the GOP deceit and remember that Bush also used the same tactics during her campaigns and for most of his presidency.
I think it is essential that voters be exposed to the outrageous practices of both parites, especially the GOP. An education campaign should be the answer to the disinformation and smear campaign of the McCain-Palin ticket. I fear voters will fall easy victims of the GOP's deceit.

First thoughts: A tie ballgame

"Wal-mart Mom" - What the...?

Mika and gang (sans Joe again) were discussing how her "American story" was capivating people.

Uh, what?

Sen. McCain, his family, and their baby-sitter had made nine trips at Keating's expense, sometimes aboard Keating's jet. Three of the trips were made during vacations to Keating's opulent Bahamas retreat at Cat Cay. McCain did not pay Keating (in the amount of $13,433) for some of the trips until years after they were taken, when he learned that Keating was in trouble over Lincoln.[6][15]

First thoughts: A tie ballgame

When Obama demonstrates he "gets it," I'll send more dough.
CA Voter

So let me see, because you don't think Obama is fighting like the republicans do, you would rather not send money even if that means a republican wins???? Can you really survive another 4 years, because I don't believe this country can!

First thoughts: A tie ballgame

I can't believe how the media is being duped by the McCain-Palin ticket. The media is questioning their ticket about anything!! It's apparent that the issues facing Americans isn't important. I'm shocked and disappointed.

First thoughts: A tie ballgame

I have to be honest with you... if America votes in John McCain and Sarah Palin, then American DESERVES what will inevitably happen: the Super-Rich will continue to make more money whilst the middle-class gets crushed; healthcare costs will continue to rise; the War on Terror will continue to be pursued as a political tactic; 9/11 will continue to be used as a political ploy; energy independence will continue to be a laugher while our costs continue to rise; the value of the dollar will continue to decline; and the government will continue to lie to us the way it has under Bush/Cheney.

This isn't about whether or not Barack Obama is a strong candidate. Again, McCain-Palin is more of the same and will not win. No one in their right mind will elect the McCain-Palin for another 4 years of Bush politics when this country is already in the dirt. When Palin-McCain is finished with this country we will be below the poverty line. These people are infidels. McCain-Palin can't even stick to the issues with honesty to take care of the American people. Seriously, how can you go to another country making war when this country is falling apart!! Really!!!! Palin has already demonstrated that she can't even tell the truth and trust to hide behind religion. She got 23 million for Alaska by backing one thing and turned against it after she got the money for such a small amount of people living in Alaska. We don't need a president nor vice president like that when it comes to the American people. This is about the people not Palin- McCain's vicious-empty self-gratification attacks. This is not about a white & black issue with Obama he is concerned about all people rich and poor. Who is Palin-McCain for? Themselves as always just like Republicans!!! Obama has my vote and others who are working hard to get people registered to vote for Obama!! Palin-McCain you are not wanted for President and Vice President of this country. Too many times have the Republicans run this nation into the ground!!! We want the real change and that is Barak Obama!! By the way Palin you think just being a woman is winning votes listen to this... Hillary Clinton focused on issues not empty jokes and lies. Palin's record shows that she will vote for something and as soon as she has her vote and gets the money for it she disdains what she was supporting. Palin don't be an air head because you will go down in history as- "An Air Head" by not addressing the current issues of the American people and actually doing something about it, but wait you can't do that because you are a Republican and Republicans don't care about the people, simply self-gratification!!!

First thoughts: A tie ballgame

I am somewhat baffled by the polls. As I listened to MSMBC this morning I heard over and over again, Palin is just like us. She shops at Wal-Mart and we would like to have a beer with her. Well every one said Bush was just like us and he, too, won the "who we want to have a beer with" debate. So Palin is just like us: lets see.
1. She shops at Wal-Mart (many of us middle and lower class people don't. Wal-Mart is one of the least supportive companies of their workers. Not just like us.
2. She and her husband have, to some degree, participated in secession meetings. Not just like us.
3. Her record of revenge against those who don't agree or behave as she wishes are similar to McCains history of the same. She may be just like McCain...but Not Just Like Us.
4, She believes that we are the Army of God and that the Jews are at odds with God because they are not saved. Not just like us...and the beat goes on. In all fairness I must admit that maybe her "us" is different from my "us". then, again, us versus them is the basis for the gridlock in our country. Us versus them is the poison some depend on the divide and conquer. But this idea comes with a twist. Often, they're not actually very nice...I'm being polite here...unless, of course, the calls are in their favor....then they just DRIP with nice. Whatever, that's not a qualification. As much as people are hesitant to say it, being a veteran and a POW is not a qualification for president.

What IS a qualification for president--a leader-- is intelligence, ability to manage (witness the largest and best-run, most disciplined campaign in history...it has a larger budget than Wasilla's and a larger involvement than the entire Alaska state population), rational and balanced judgment (as opposed to blatant sucking-up to a radical right-wing "lobby")and clarity of thought. (to those annoying individuals who keep talking about Obama's "uhs" and pauses as if that were contrasted to McCain's stellar speaking abilities and mental processes.....you don't recognize a functioning brain working through various possibilities because it has been too long since your party has actually produced anyone who thought beyond the "talking points" and spoke their own minds!)

So, to my way of thinking, voting for McPalin is insanity. I pray (yes, an Obama supporter who prays, try as you might to claim God as your own, that's yet another lie) this country has had enough of a shock in the past 8 years to have been jolted out of the insanity.

Although Palin's words side with McCain in the oil company windfall tax dispute, her actions side with Obama. If we are back to 1940 and suddenly confronted by the looming Second World War, what would have mattered? A white woman who believes that war was a God's will (and don't kno how opposed Jesus was to conflcits?) matters more because she is white. Whiteness matters above all else, even if America's future is at stake. We don't care what the outside world thinks, even if that means the collapse of our great nation's global clout.
If that is not the case, then what really matter to voters? The issues of our time or the sexualizing of American politics and popular culture? Small-town values trumping everything great about America and the world it leads and influences?

First thoughts: A tie ballgame

Please women, understand what I and many other women fought for in the 60's. I'm a 64 (65 in December) year old woman and am extremely upset that women may be getting ready to give back all of the progress we made through hard struggle and yes, community organizing, by falling for Palin's policies and worse lies! Let's deal with the issues:

1) Right to choice (does not mean pro-abortion) does mean we control our own bodies, not the government. Palin is for a Constitutional amendment making abortion illegal with prison terms even in cases of rape and incest.

2) Palin opposes the ERA and Equal Pay for Equal Work.

3) Palin is opposed to stem cell research which would help to cure many of our diseases.

4) Palin is for teaching creationism in the schools and thinks Evolution is a lie.

5) Palin is for censoring libraries and when the librarian refused to "burn/ban the books" she fired her.

6) Palin think that Global Warming is not man-made (so drill, drill, drill!)

7) Palin thinks that it's "God's Will" that the Alaska Pipeline e built.

8) Palin lied when she says she stopped the "Bridge to Nowhere" when in fact she supported it until Washington laughed at funding it.

9) Let's talk about drilling. Forget the fact that when we focus on drilling we worsen climate change and enciourage more use of fossil fuels. If we drill, drill, drill, all that oil from American companies goes on the international market to the highest bidder. Typically, China and India will bid higher, get the oil, leave us in the same situation and prices will still go higher!

10) There recently was an organization built called "Women Against Palin" where over 13,000 women wrote letters slamming the idea that Palin should be supported. They had so many responses that they could'nt print them all. Women are waking up and will provide an October surprise!

Lastly, are we better off than we were 8 years ago? Of course not. So to Palin/McCain I say ENOUGH!

First thoughts: A tie ballgame

It's hardly a tie ball game?

When you include the Bradley effect (+6 McCain) minus the cell phone culture (-3 McCain), you have a President McCain in November.

First thoughts: A tie ballgame

'...Palin billed state taxpayers “for 312 nights spent in her own home during her first 19 months in office, charging a ‘per diem’ allowance intended to cover meals and incidental expenses while traveling on state business.”...'

COME ON !!
WHERE ARE THE DEMOCRATIC 527's ???
This should be on TV 24/7 !!

Moveon ? There is no way a Republican would win this year's election. Not after Bush. Not after all the bo-boos McCain has done and still doing, not after selecting this VP.

I have a theory that the Republicans have thrown in the towel on this one and will prepare to take back the WH in 2012. Hoping an Obama administration would fail. It'll be so much easier for them to simply throw stones and make sure things don't work out for the Democratic President. The Repubs are 'smart' this way. They know and have accepted the fact (except for the few naive) that they cannot win an election right after Bush. Not when his memory is fresh.

Maybe just maybe, the next President won't deliver (it'll take minimum 2 terms to clean up this mess) as fast as the people would hope for. It'll be a sure way for the Repubs to get back in power. After all, people have short term memory.

The Dems would win this no matter who is in the ticket.

MSNBC please post this.

First thoughts: A tie ballgame

Not all voters are political "junkies" and many of them base their decision solely on what they see on TV. And right now, they have been seeing Gov Sarah Palin drawing adoring crowds. Any negative stories about her would have to be BIGGIES or lots of people simply won't take notice.

Issues like the economy, Iraq and Iran, etc??? Yes, Sarah Palin is engaging, but what surprises me is that banning books, calling America’s army the army of God, and lying have become so attractive. No one cares, evidently, that the most salient points, from her point of view, about her biography, consist of lies and half truths. They don't mind that her sharpest barbs are also lies and half-truths. When you take into account her secession tendencies it is a plethora of contradictions between what we see and what we get. Now some embrace her gun totin’ which is quite appropriate for the shotgun wedding the right is celebrating, in spite of the fact, that it is quite possible that no such event would have occurred if they were not in the public eye. In other words, necessity is the mother of convention. She possesses a pleasant appearance and a somewhat wicked tongue. Now her backers are acting as if these are the very things we need to stand up our moral superiority. Suddenly, we have found the whole package, a soft liar with a great persona. Finally, some think, an American woman has become the entity we always hoped for, George Bush or, even worse, Dick Cheney, in drag.

First thoughts: A tie ballgame

Chuck Todd, I read where NBC booted Chris & Keith because the GOP thought they were too tough on them. That explains why Mika has not discussed 1 single issue facing this country all week. That explains why Mika asked permission from Pat Buchanan if she could bring up Palin's church. Pat said NO and Mika abliged.

The Press has Constitutional rights because our founding father's wanted to HOLD POLITICIANS ACCOUNTABLE for their voting record, private live & public life.

MSNBC is more concerned with "getting" the interview than they are with the PEOPLE's right to know.

Pathetic ... pathetic ... In July, Pennsylvania investigators asked the public for help in locating a fugitive named Luis R. Torres-Serrano, who is accused "of submitting more than 100 fraudulent voter registration forms he collected on behalf of the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now to county election officials." Also in July, a massive, nearly $1 million embezzlement scheme by top ACORN officials was exposed.
ACORN's political arm endorsed Obama in February and has ramped up efforts to register voters across the country. In the meantime, completely ignored by the mainstream commentariat and clean-election crusaders, the Obama campaign admitted failing to report $800,000 in campaign payments to ACORN. They were disguised as payments to a front group called "Citizen Services, Inc." for "advance work."

Please please FR, I want this to be reported on so I can make the best decision. I don't want Obama to win because he has played like a typical politian; rather, I want him to win because he is honest in all avenues.

Linda, Salem MA
First thoughts: A tie ballgame

To the Media: If for some reason this election goes to the Republicans, we the people have you to blame.

Why hype up this character called Palin - who the heck is she? It scares me that Obama wants to move us to a socialist society, where basically everybody is on the dole. In such a system, where is the incentive to do better? Just like Obama trying to justify to O'Reilly that raising taxes on the higher incomes was justificable. In the end, O'Reilly told BHO that for him he would stop investing because he would be penalized for risking his money. If he makes a profit, then the cap gains tax takes it away. Without investments, there isn't capital available to businesses. And, with Obama taxing small business, will dry up jobs. Small business accounts for 70% of all new growth. It makes me all very afraid. If people expect business to support them but business can't make a profit, where will we be? I, for one, prefer to avoid the toilet swim.

First thoughts: A tie ballgame

Will the msm please look into her hiring and firings as well as how she didn't vet the Safety commissioner who was a sexual assaulter, AND that she made victims pay for their own rape kits to save money for Wasilla?
Please look into these stories!

First thoughts: A tie ballgame

Take a snapshot of the status of the race today, and I guarantee it'll be a different picture by next month. Nail Fox News first for their continued GOP bias before using other standards against NBC/MSNBC.

First thoughts: A tie ballgame

Dear Dimocrats:

I know that you are in lock step with the Obama/Biden change theme, but how can you have change when you have a clown like Obama choosing a Washington insider who has been there for 36 years as a change? What is going to change with the same folks saying the same thing over and over until we believe it....what a load of codswallop!!!!!!

I have read many things on this site and MSNBC is not a very accurate champion of anything is against Obama, I think this statement will not be listed if fact. If listed I will be shocked.

Senator McCain has grabed both Senator's on the Democrated site by the balls with an Alaskan barracuda..and they don't have a clue. One can only imagian if they where confronted with a real situation, like Putin wanting to attack all the little countries that where once under the Russian thumb. They would not have a freakin clue have to react, they would have to get together with Pelosi and Reed to see what to do, those clowns can't even make a simple decision on drilling for our own oil to get us out of the Arab strangle hold on our economy. Give me a break.

Vote for the real change in November....McCain/Palin

P.S. I don't think I will see George Bushes name on the November ballot you knuckle heads.

Steve
USN RET American Hero

First thoughts: A tie ballgame

Interesting that now that the Obama lead has evaporated all the hate and venom come out. The simple fact is that Sarah Palin is not qualified to be the Vice President! Two years ago she was the mayor of a town of 5,000 people in Alaska...and now she's in line to be the second most powerful person in the world? That's just wrong. On October 2, when they have the vice presidential debate, I hope Joe Biden smokes her, and there's no reason to think he won't. One other thing I found interesting is MSNBC's own online live polling. Obama was about 73 and McCain somewhere in the twenties. The link is right on the same page they plaster this garbage. Let's stick to the issues - if these crazy stories were completely true - do you think these people (McCain/Palin - Obama/Biden) would have come this far? Looking at the pre-convention polls, this means the undecideds are breaking for McCain over Obama by 6 - 2 % points.

If could have to do with the Palin pick by McCain or the fact that Obama has run out of steam or stirring speeches!

First thoughts: A tie ballgame

Obama was unable to decide yes or no on the vast majority of votes. Voting "Present" is the Politically Expedient thing to do.

Obama's life story is full of vague residences, unknown associations and half-truths. Just where did he live, and with whom? What did he teach? What happened to those poor people he helped as a Commuity Organizer for ACORN. We seem to know a lot about the surface, but not much depth to the story.

Obama said the only fair way to run campaigns is with public financing. Of course, he said this when he thought he would have trouble raising money. Once the money began to build up, he changed his mind and opted out of public financing. Is it that he does not want to run a fair campaign? Or did he really believe that in the first place?

My point is simple. Change, he ain't. He is trumpeting the same old liberal ideas that have been around for decades. He is campaigning the same way liberals have for decades. He even appointed a lifelong Washington insider to his VP spot. Where is the change? I just see another liberal lawyer hungry for power to push a socialist agenda.
First thoughts: A tie ballgame

The politics of personal DESTRUCTION the NEW kind of politics designed to unite all of us its one thing to watch as the repugnant repuckers do it ,its sad when DEMS lose their morals and start mocking GOD and CHRISTIANS when they actively seek their vote twisted SPIN ENJOY you are now republicans "First he supported the war........" its so child like in understanding.

First thoughts: A tie ballgame

I really don't understand the basis for most of the comments made here. Perhaps the only people that take the time to e-mail are the ones that are so heavily invested in one particular candidate, that they have abandoned all reason. It seems to me that the Obama supporters seem to be in a full blown attack mode after Palin was nominated. Certainly they can not possibly make the argument that media coverage is somehow unjust to Obama. Please if you have an opinion
based on fact and not just cheap shots, lets here them. What are the candidates really in favor of doing, how much is it going to cost, and where is the money actually going to come from? Those seem like more reasonable questions to consider.

First thoughts: A tie ballgame

Homework Assignment:
Read London Times, London Telegraph, The Scotsman and The Glasgow Herald every day between now and the election. As for the "scandal" about Palin's expense accounts, the article also notes that these are customary expense claims and that she did not claim all that she could have. (appauling to me) No aid to Katrina-Didn't he just tell people in the Katrina area, this will never happen again? Well he made it happen by voting down and tax relief or additional aid to these folks. Voted down aid and support to the Native Americans-Voted down Medicare-low voting on any Civil Rights or Justice bills. That certainly tells me he is not for the people of diversity! These are the important issues-Obama is absolutely right-I calculated the votes and I have him at 93 % voting with Bush and his party line-the issue here is-there is no change and the patterns of voting certainly show he is not a Maverick as he would call himself. We need real truth, we need a real voice and we need real change-Vote for Obama if you want to have a future for your family and children

First thoughts: A tie ballgame

Can somebody/anybody provide a rationale explanation for the 20-point swing amongst white women in the past week according to the ABC/Wash Post poll? Everyone always likes to say that "we vote on issues." Swinging that dramatically from one side to the other was based on issues? Or was it based on identity politics? If the latter, women everywhere should be ashamed that they've been played so cynically and easily by an old white guy and the team who brought you Bush and Cheney. Wow.
Amazed American (Sent Tuesday, September 09, 2008 9:26 AM)

Shame on us? To me, Palin represents someone I can actually feel good about voting for. Obama is a socialist and McCain isn't that far behind. Palin represents common sense and a stop to this socialist mentality that the country has been falling into. People are hungry for it. People are hungry for common sense. Protecting and defending the U.S. means more than defending us from foreign attacks. It includes defending the public with respect to their civil rights, civil liberties and other needs, e.g., national health insurance, the right of abortion, the continuation of Social Security, gay rights, other rights of privacy, fair progressive taxation and a host of other needs and rights.

If the vice president were ever called on to lead the country, there is no question in my mind that the experience and demonstrated judgment of Joe Biden is superior to that of Sarah Palin. Sarah Palin is a plucky, exciting candidate, but when her record is examined, she fails miserably with respect to her views on the domestic issues that are so important to the people of the U.S., and to me. Frankly, it would be a tragedy if she were to succeed John McCain in the presidency. MSNBC you need to vet the Rep princess Palin and show america who she really is. Think the straight talk express is ful of bull not allowing interviews. Its a crock. Rep has always been liars and cheats who won't stop at nothing to achieve their goals. Sad choices all the way through for Democrats. If Democrats can not beat Republicans with such poor Republican administration for 8 years, then this country needs to discard them for their lack of political intellect and skills and look elsewhere as a liberal party.

First thoughts: A tie ballgame

You couldn't get a job at McDonalds and become district manager after 143 days of experience.

You couldn't become chief of surgery after 143 days of experience of being a surgeon.

You couldn't get a job as a teacher and be the superintendent after 143 days of experience.

After 143 days of work experience, Obama believes he was ready to be Commander In Chief, Leader of the Free World, and fill the shoes of Abraham Lincoln, FDR, JFK and Ronald Reagan. 143 days?

We all have to start somewhere. The MSM does not ask a single question concerning his associations with his sordid Chicago friends. No mention of where that $49 mill went to. Just sweep it under the rug. More has been brought up about Palin in 10 days than in 19 months with Obama. The MSM is in love with Obama.

First thoughts: A tie ballgame

I read the former posts with much interest, and all I can say is this. Every woman I have come into contact with is elated over the nomination of Palin. I actually have an aunt who lives in Alaska and knows her firsthand. She said what you see on TV is the real Sarah Palin. She also told me not to believe any negative spin coming out of the media against her. She said this woman is the best thing that ever happened to Alaska, hence the high approval ratings for her. Afraid Democrats are going to chins up and take a loss in November. Hope they can be good sports about it. We shall see.

First thoughts: A tie ballgame

Unfortunately neither candidate brings much to the table. I love what McCain has done for the country but he should have been the GOP nominee 8 years ago, not today at 72 years of age.

Obama on the other hand would be an outstanding candidate 8 years from now. The guy is suprememly talented but has very few relative accomplishments. Palin's line (or her speechwriter I should say) about him writing two books about himself while having no accomplishments did hold merit with me.

The American love affair with both Palin and Obama shows our collective shallowness in what we look for in our leaders.

For the second time in a row, I am not happy with our choices for commander in chief. I do see that the comments and analysis on this site lean overwhelmingly to the left (with many of the comments being downright cruel and/or misinformed.)
