Well you don't get cash from the airlines on your frequent flyer miles, but the IRS still considers it income when you buy a ticket with them. Unlike a repugnant one Charlie Rangel admits making a mistake and will allow an investigation. No repugnant one is this honest and would just lie about the charges not being true and would fight any investigation by claiming it was politically motivated.

Sounds like Charlie needs a better accountant. His accountant has obviously screwed up for 20 years by not asking the proper questions that would have brought the income to light.

In my several decades of tax preparation I've found that the republicans are the worst tax cheaters of all!

What a joke. Rangel negotiated a good deal for himself, then made a mistake in how it was accounted for that has virtually no effect on how much tax he paid. The basis of his property increases, but his depreciation deduction also increases. Net effect: ZERO. And there is no evidence that this "good deal" resulted in any politcal favors being granted. John Boehner is once again just trying to score cheap political points from a non-issue.

Something tells me he didn't really violate the tax code, depending on which accountant/tax attorney you talk to. That is one huge pile of code, and is always subject to interpretation.

OTOH, if he actually knowingly violated the law, that's different. The House should at least slap his wrists in some way, AFTER every other congress-person's tax return is examined for similar irregularities.

roperty was a rental property that generated income. Moreover, he admits that he has NEVER (NOT ONCE) paid tax on the rental income it generated claiming it was a mistake. His primary excuse was that "the income had gone directly toward paying down the mortgage on the property and he had rarely if ever received income statements related to it". Doesn't that suggest that he knew the unit was generating income? Following, as Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee is he suggesting that he does not know that income, even if is being used to pay down a mortgage, needs to be reported to the IRS (and in his case to Congress). I have income too (it's called a paycheck). And, the majority of that income is automatically deducted from my checking account each month to pay my mortgage. Should I no longer declare my income on my Tax Return?
Charlie Rangel is a crook! And, the easiest way to confirm that this was a scam is to look at the tax returns of the other "pioneer investors" including his friend Theodore Kheel who purportedly suggested this investment property. If the other investors "forgot" to declare the income they received that would pretty much prove that malfeasance was involved here.

Because, as we say in the legal world, she "opened the door" the minute she called herself a pitbull with lipstick?
