Considering all the negative stories about McCain and his Rick Davis' association with Freddie and Fannie, I can see why McCain would want to up his economic cred with a "big" move like this. It will divert attention from his current troubles.

I don't think I want either of them in the middle of this. Their agendas could be questioned. Are they there to score political points or are they there to really help?

While this bailout deal is important, sending both presidential candidates into the fray would create a distraction to those there that are trying to solve this as quickly as possible. I think both candidates would be wise to let their colleagues work this out without the distraction and media frenzy both of them in Washington would create. Besides, the election will still happen on Nov. 4th. The public deserves to see these debates. If anything, they should change the topic of Friday's debate to the Economy and Domestic Issues.

I am still not sure what the end result of the bailout will be but I do not believe having the debates suspended and the two candidates in DC Friday night will alone solve the issue. We need more information from the people involved not someone who up until last week thought the ecomomy was strong.
Let us not forget this is a foreign policy debate and there are still many foreign policy issues that we need to hear from the candidates on. Iraq? Iran? Afganistan? Pakistan? Spain? (the one in Europe, not Latin America).

How can a Senator fix the economic situation? He is not even on any of the ranking committes invloved in the hearings. He is not President yet either, nor is any of his "Economic Advisors" even in either the House or the Senate. This is GRANDSTANDING and when I said before Checkmate, I cleared my head and was a little more pragmatic about this.

Does that mean he's suspending his lying TV ads too? That would be a welcome relief. But it's typical McCain's statement didn't mention that Obama called him first. Makes him sound like he's in charge (heaven forbid!). The more panicked McCain becomes, the more he's into grandstanding. After all his talk about how he wanted Obama to do weekly town halls with him, is he now so afraid of meeting him face-to-face?

I agree!! but i also think the debates should go on. Somehow, i don't see McCain skipping a fund raising event to be in Washington.
1. This is a 90-min debate on an issue that candidates are supposed to be well versed on anyways. How much time is it going to take up unless you were planning to study for it and run out of time for the last minute. McCain should have acted like a good student and prepared well in advance and showed up to take the 90-minute exam instead of waiting till the last minute to prepare and then citing an "unforeseeable circumstance" to get out of it. Sounds like a bad student to me.
2. And whatever happened to the guy who wanted to do multiple town halls. Now he wants to skip even the one scheduled meeting? As far as I can see, this is McCain thinking that his best shot at a bounce, the foreign policy debate that Friday is supposed to be able, would be lost in the news about the economy. So he wants to wait until the economy is in the background in order to make news about his foreign policy expertise. Obama camp say NO.
Congress has been doing just fine without them for the past few months. It can spare them for 90 minutes. Face the world McCain. Whats with all the fear these days?
