He got into a photo op, which was destructive for the negotiations, so after the debate he stayed at his Virginia headquarters and made phone calls from there.

Obama has been speaking to Paulson and congressional negotiators every days for a couple of weeks, calling them several times every day behind the scenes. As soon as the Paulson plan was announced, Obama announced a series of principles which should be incorporated into the bill, and they were included.

So who has helped the negotiations? Who understood what needed to be done? But I do try to watch those things objectively. Whether or not I'm successful at that, well, I think so, lol.

And I differ from the pundits who say McCain sounded well informed. Exactly which answer were you guys getting that from?

Yes, he's traveled a lot and he's met a lot of people. He also screwed up two of the six or seven names he dropped.

But more importantly, can anyone watching that debate honestly tell me it gave any insight into McCain's foreign policy vision?

We did get an insight into Obama's vision. He wants to get us back to a foreign policy that is more pragmatic and less antagonistic. One that tries to lead through reason rather than billigerence. And, of course, regarding al Qaeda... one that wants to focus on al Qaeda by actually focusing on al Qaeda.

But what's McCain's vision. He's traveled a lot and he wants us to believe Obama "doesn't understand" McCain's positions. But what exactly those positions are, I don't think McCain ever said.

Obama did miss a couple great debate points, I believe. For instance, he should have said, "John, as you often have throughout your career, you can't seem to get that when people don't agree with you, its not because they don't understand your points - its because they do understand them, and still don't agree."

First thoughts: A shift toward Obama

THINK HISTORY. MCCAIN WAS COUNTED OUT OF THE NOMINATION PRIMARY. MCCAIN IS THE 'REAL' COMEBACK CANDIDATE.
.

First thoughts: A shift toward Obama

It's good to see that the polls show that Obama won the first debate and that the Dumb and Dumber ticket is in panic mode. I think middle class Americans saw who was providing real leadership the past two weeks and that's Obama. They saw through the petty partisan political gimmicks of "Desperate" McCain.

Now we'll get some comedic relief on Thursday night as a whole lot of Democrats are going to watch "Sinner" Sarah do her airhead act on national tv and there'll be no editing to save her from her silly answers. Going to be a lot of laughs debate night as we watch the Dumb and Dumber ticket self destruct. Plus she'll provide more material for Tina Fey to show us the real action doll bozo.

Yup we should know that Obama is the winner early on Election Eve. Going to be fun watching the repugnant ones cry their eyes out when they lose big.

Go Obama/Biden 08/12!

First thoughts: A shift toward Obama

McCain was a rude, cranky man at the debate. He interrupted Obama, breaking the debate rules. Why hasn't he been called out on that more?

Carrabou Barbie, aka Princess Palin, is such a piece of work. I just hope someone is counseling Biden on how to deal with debating a woman who will act like a victim after the debate.

Obama should be taking this race away in states like PA, OH, Mich., etc....and we all know why he isn't doing so there - race.

As for Bill Clinton, it pained me to watch him Sunday morning. I have no idea what he's doing. I am really getting to believe that he's trying to sabatoge Obama for his wife's 2012 run. Notice, he said he will only campaign for Obama "if asked"..."I will do whatever they ask of me."

Finally, happy Rosh.!

First thoughts: A shift toward Obama

I hope and pray that the trend towards Obama continues. Perhaps Americans are beginning to understand that despite our reservations about Obama, the alternative (McCain) is not what our great nation needs over the next 4 to 8 years. America needs a total shift in ideology and philosophy in order for our nation to survive the coming decades. We need to restore our influence in the world and strengthen our failing economy. We need to improve our military that McCain and Bush help to destroy. We need to uplift the middle-class and ensure that education and healthcare are accessible for all Americans. We need real change and that change is Obama-Biden. If I am willing to vote Democrat this year, then everyone should be. The Republicans, I am sad to say, have failed miserably at managing this nation and it is time for a shift in leadership.

First thoughts: A shift toward Obama

The American public is coming around. When it comes down to it, and they're in that voting booth, they're going to think about the last eight years, and how disastrous they were.

And any chance of voting for McCain will go right down the tubes.

First thoughts: A shift toward Obama

As an undecided, I feel bad for Palin. If she would have been properly vetted, the McCain campaign would have known that this may be too much for her to cram in all at once. Not that she can't handle it, I think she is intelligent and if she were more aware of what is & has been going on, she would be just fine. The problems come into play when she seems so lost in current events, they are hiding her from the press, have to fix or spin everything she says and now so many top Republicians coming out against her. It's almost like Alaska IS seperate from the US. Where has she been?

Biden has been in Congress for a long time. He is very intelligent and well knowledged in all areas. But, I don't believe Biden matters to her. She won't be debating him. Watch her go after Obama...

Nothing else makes sense. Which is sad because it's not for her to go after him now, we still don't know who she is or what she stands for. Her going after him may cause harm. We saw her go after him often, but there is still this question of who SHE is and SHE believes. Her interviews have been bad and she seems to be overloaded with manditory talking points, so they all come out at wierd times answering direct questions. I feel bad for her.

Instead of being prideful, why not just say -- "I Can't Do This". Country First? Don't we deserve something better than a "soccor Mom" a heartbeat away from the presidency? Don't we deserve the "most qualified" America has to offer? It took her attending 6 colleges to finally get her degree. Don't we deserve they guy who TAUGHT Constitutional Law??????This would be funny if it wasn't so serious. COMMON SENSE should tell you Palin isn't ready to be President of the PTA let alone POTUS. Obama/ Biden '08/'12

First thoughts: A shift toward Obama

If they'd let her be vetted by the media, at least she could grow a spine. I AGREE!!!

I live in Cary, NC, a suburb of Raleigh. Let me give you my take on what is going on here in NC.

I have NEVER seen such excitement for a Democratic ticket as there is for Obama and Biden. There have been MANY rallies all over the state where the crowds are just enormous. Two recent examples - last weekend Obama was in Charlotte and had a 20,000 crowd, with many thousands more in a 'sound only' space. This past Saturday Obama and Biden appeared together in Greensboro to another overflow crowd topping 20,000!! Yard signs are everywhere for Obama - I have yet to see a single McCain sign. Obama is running TONS of ads here. McCain has some, but not nearly as many. Voter registration is substantially in the Democrats' favor. Most polls show a deadheat, or have Obama with a slight lead. This is in NORTH CAROLINA which has not gone Democratic for over 30 years!!!!

WHY? Several reasons. The economy. The numerous colleges in NC with a VERY enthusiastic outpouring of support for Obama and Biden from campuses like UNC (all of its campuses), Duke, NC State, etc. And a HUGE recent influx of YANKEES!!! We are seeing MANY transplants of people from NY, NJ, New England, etc. to our Research Triangle - places like IBM, etc. AND - NC is the new "Florida" for retirees! Charlotte, Greensboro, and Raleigh have been inundated with people from the north, who in many cases, are DEMOCRATS! Here in Cary our acronym is "Containment Area for Relocated Yankees!!" On our street alone we have had families move in from Massachusetts, NJ, and Rhode Island in just the last year! And they ALL have Obama yard signs!!

I really think North Carolina will go for Obama and Biden this year! I am thrilled! We put Obama over the top on May 6. And I think we will do it again on November 4!!
First thoughts: A shift toward Obama

Older white voters, especially those with limited education and exposure to a broader world are not capable of moving beyond their limitations. Thus they will probably not vote for Sen Obama. Which is unfortunate for them and their families.

Recently, I traveled through these large states, and was encouraged to see far more signs on lawns and cars supporting Sen. Obama. This was especially noticable in Ohio where I spent most of my time. Those in rural areas are less likely to be a fan of either one, tho my guess would be they'll vote MCCain.

We have much work yet to do in diminishing racial prejudices. Friday's debate should help as I thought the contrast in temperaments was very distinct. This one was looking for calm, reassuring, and thoughtfulness. In other words looking at temprement of each of the candidates. Remember we are not electing a debater but rather a person who we think can handle the vagracies of the presidency. The pundits just had the wrong end of the stick.

Second, we should not be surprised by the difficulties in the states of MI, Ohio, Pa. There are two factors that influence these states: Republican defined cultural issues of abortion, guns, and some bias and not issues (taxes, social security, health care) that would better many of the voters in question. They have a record of voting against their economic interests. Second, is the educational differences in the states in which Obama is charging and those in which he is not. Those who have missed the education boom have good reason to feel left out by those who have received education.

First thoughts: A shift toward Obama

Huh, interesting local perspective on the Palin cheesesteak order. IA and NM lean Obama? Out of the last 5 polls I've seen from IA the smallest lead for Obama 7 and I've never seen a poll with him behind. McCain lost there in 2000 and 2004. NM the smallest lead I've seen for him recently is +8. For MI other than your poll done with Mason Dixon Obama has held a 4-13 lead in the polls I keep seeing so with McCain pretty much never leading here and MI going blue the last 4 elections how that is a toss up I dunno. Same goes for WI. While it's been close, it was close 4 years ago too. And how do you move PA from lean Obama to toss up when the polls in the last week haven't changed? Yes those states are close but they aren't as close as the other toss ups in your list.

First thoughts: A shift toward Obama

The bailout was supposed to calm the markets. Obama gives the American people the much needed change that we deserve.

John McCain has proven that he does not have the temperment to be our leader and he has put his own personal ego ahead of the American people. His words of country first are a total joke. His selection of Sarah Palin as his running mate is becoming more apparent every day as nothing more than a desperate effort to woo support for a failing campaign. I feel bad for her, but her ego is only drawfed by McCain's.

I once had a lot of respect for McCain, but have lost all respect for him period. He has allowed his personal ambition to take charge, and the anger that showed on his face during the debate, and the lack of respect for Obama, goes to show why he would be very ineffective in dealing with world leaders. If anyone should be called an elietest it would be the person who has eight houses and thirteen cars and more money then he can count. How could a person of this statue have any idea how the common person lives and suffers. McCain is so far over the rest of us that he has forgotten we exist.

OBAMA IS OUR BEST CHOICE TO CHANGE THIS COUNTRY TOWARDS THE CORRECT DIRECTION !!

First thoughts: A shift toward Obama

Hoosiers aren't completely stupid... GOP Takes things for granted entirely too often...

Obama sees and understands how hard hit we've been the past 8 years and it is very obvious we want change that won't happen with a senator that needs to be retired and a VP candidate that is worse than current VP.

Hope it doesn't affect Mitch Daniel's re-election he's fixed a lot for our state but we can't handle 1 second let alone 4 more years of Failed GOP Policies in our state.

First thoughts: A shift toward Obama

Joe Biden is going to eat Palin alive -- watch and see.

First thoughts: A shift toward Obama

What the polls won't tell you!

Here is the reason Obama will lose that no one wants to admit: White voters will not vote for a BLACK LIBERAL!I know, I am now a racist for saying this. But before you pass judgment, try answering the following questions honestly:
1. Do you feel uncomfortable when you travel through black urban areas?
2. Do you even travel through black urban areas?
3. Do you feel comfortable when you are surrounded by a group of black teenagers?
4. Are you OK with your daughter or son dating a black person?
5. Do you laugh at stereotypical black jokes?
6. Have you ever even muttered the N-word even under your breath?
7. Would you ever admit that you might be a bit racist to a pollster?
8. Do you really believe Hispanics will embrace a black candidate?
9. Do you cringe when you hear a black athlete or performer speak the English language?

These are just a few questions that need to be answered. For the record, here are my answers:
1. I don't feel uncomfortable traveling through black urban areas.
2. I have worked through-out my career in some of the "worst" areas in LA and Chicago.
3. I am not uncomfortable in a group of black teenagers. I did not even have a white friend until I went to college.
4. I think I might be uncomfortable with my daughters dating black men. Have some time before that happens, but would like my daughters to date within my culture.
5. I still laugh at non-PC jokes.
6. Have used the N-word many times. Both with my black friends in normal conversation, and as a slur when I got mad.
7. I would never admit to a pollster that I am racist because I don't think I am. My answers might contradict that.
8. My experience with Hispanics is that there is no real love for blacks. This blanket statement is just my opinion.
9. Yes it aggravates me when Ebonics is spoken. I believe it just makes the person look stupid. This is true of white people also.

With that said, I am a conservative because of the issues. I would have no problem voting for Michael Steele!

First thoughts: A shift toward Obama

The latest parody on Plain was telling, in my mind. Tina Fey simply repeated Palin's words when Palin responded that the $700 billion "was about helathcare" and so on. I felt sorry for her, actually.

First thoughts: A shift toward Obama

Chuck, regarding Bill Clinton's reaction to the question if Obama is a great man, do you think he's a great man Chuck? What has he done to make him great? He may one day turn out to do many big things and help many people and one day become a great man. But for now, what has he done to make him a great man? A great man, Churchill and Roosevelt had to win WW II to earn that. Gandhi had to peacefully free the Indians from British rule, Martin Luther King had a lifetime of work and died for racial equality. Reagan had to start an economic revolution and win the cold war without firing a shot. Ted Kennedy had a lifetime of work and commitment to pass legislation to protect the weak among us to earn being called "a great man". It is arguable that John McCain, with his 5 years in prison in a foreign land and his years of service (McCain- Feingold, normalized relations with Vietnam,Gang of 14, etc ) has earned the right to be called a great man. But Barack Obama???? WHAT HAS HE DONE TO EARN IT??? Chuck, are you kidding me?? Palin when, in fact, her own party seems to be undermining her abilities by begging for and getting a changed format to placate her "inexperience" as a debater. Does the BS never stop with this campaign?

Sen. Obama is called inexperienced by the McCain-Palin camp all day every day and yet he got no special privileges going toe-to-toe with the "war hero" but the same doesn't apply for someone who, if her party is choosen to lead this country for another 4 years, could be the very person with their finger on the 3:00 a.m. button? The very way in which Gov. Palin has been presented and carefully puppeted/flaunted like a novelty to the people and media is sexism at its finest but Biden and Obama need to watch what they say and do in reference to her yet its a free for all when their character as witnessed gentlemen is put into question? Give me a break. Palin deserves no preferential treatment whatsoever and if she wants to run the big house she needs to put the lipstick away and step up to the plate like a player not a cheerleader. If McCain would stop acting like her sugar daddy and treat her with the respect he demands others give her than lead by example.

First thoughts: A shift toward Obama

McCain appears to have bought into the philosophy that there is no such thing as "bad" publicity - anything he can do to get even one extra column-inch of space in the media is fine with him. After all, whether it's his pick for VP or his "suspending" his campaign or running out on an appearance on David Letterman's show and lying about the reason, it focuses the media on him rather than Obama. There are rumors that his next "stunt" will be the pre-election wedding of Palin's daughter, but that to me is a real stretch as the security measures alone will end up taking more than the five weeks left until the election. But as Senator McCain has proven this year, we shouldn't discount anything as "too bizarre" as his campaign to absurdity continues.

First thoughts: A shift toward Obama

we should just save the money of running an election and just anoint obama pres. I don't think so, sure he was POW, but that was against his will. His airplane was shot down; maybe he was just a bad pilot. You know the Navy records show he was in 5 aircraft when they were damaged. OK, one was on the deck of a carrier, another pilot fired a rocket and damaged several aircraft. But the other 3 he crashed, plus the one that was shot down. If he would have volunteered to be a POW, so someone else could have come home. Then of course he would have been a Hero. I think the World is getting the word victim confused with hero.
Hero? He divorced his first wife after she became disfigured in an accident, so he could marry a rich, politically connected woman. He was disciplined for his involvement in the Keating 5 Savings and Loan scandal. Hero? Even after the S&L debacle he went on to push for financial deregulation. Have you read the papers lately and seen what a mess he has put us in? McCain for President? I don't think so; he should be ridden out of town on a rail. You want change in Washington? Surly you don't elect a Washington insider, McCain is the ultimate insider. McCain’s service in Washington was to serve John McCain. Obama refuses to speak of how he will pay for his 800 Billion in new social programs. He says he will give 95% of people a tax cut, but never talks about the fact that approximately 100 million people receive back at least as much as they paid in due to earned income tax credits, head of household tax credits, and child tax credits. Under his tax plan the number of Americans getting back more than they paid in would be at the highest levels ever. Giant welfare plan. But we would be taking that from "the rich" so it would be o.k. Never mind by his very definition 98% of employers would be defined as "rich". And McCain can't bring himself to admit that he shares ample responsibility for the financial crisis we face. Maybe we should make certain positions within large corporations subject to absolutely no protection of private assets. This would give the people that run these companies pause to make decisions that could ruin our very country.

First thoughts: A shift toward Obama

When I hear " Americans are clinging to their guns and religion" to an group of wealthy San Franciscians and "For the FIRST time in my life, I am proud of America and America is a down right mean country" it scares me. I am not trying to make a case for race, I am not playing faves - and YES, I want a woman to be VP or Pres, but the right one...not just anyone. Correct, we need leadership, intelligence, and basically a fresh start with fresh ideas to revamp our faith, our status, and our ecomony in this country ( Plus a literal laundry list of huge social issues). Instead of all Americans getting behind him and working to make America better and to truly assume a global leadership role, he will be plagued by inuendo and sabatoge just like Bill Clinton. The big monied interests and Neo-conservatives just can't stand to have a Democrat in charge. Welfare and assistance is only good if in the favor of Corporate Capitalists. If you want help the people of your own state, who will you help?

First thoughts: A shift toward Obama

I don't know why we even have to be subjected to the socialist ultra liberal media's polls when they are far from the truth. I can poll 1000 people right now that will say they will vote for a ham sandwich if I ask them to. Polls mean nothing. Obama is as phony as a three dollar bill made of plastic. McCain the hero for president.

First thoughts: A shift toward Obama

WOW! When a thinking person looks dispassionatley at the candidates, Obama/Biden are clearly superior. However, the American Electorate has demonstrated very little ability to distinguish between hype and ideas in my lifetime. Watching the debate on Friday, you could clearly see McCain pandering to the lowest common denominator, again. The Rovian formula is clerly to stay on your talking points, belittle your opponent, notch up the fear factor. Change is evil! I am affraid that this formula will work again, appealing to the same NASCAR, NRA, Bible Thumping, gang that gave us eight years of Bush. When you add good old fashioned racism to the mix, I am really scred that we will end up with Commandant McCain and Sarah Barracuda come January. I hope that I am wrong. Heaven help us if I am right.

First thoughts: A shift toward Obama

I refuse to vote for Obama... he's just a few steps from making our country into a communist state. The goverment can't be the answer for every problem we face. At sometime "WE THE PEOPLE" must take care of ourselves.
S.Palin may not as much knowledge about Wash. but she has more experience than Obama hands down. She has ran a state for more than a year and made their state actually have a surplus... Obama hasn't even voted in the senate in over a year. I'm sorry maybe he did vote for the bailout today.
Keep hearing that a lot of women don't like her because she chose to have a special needs child. They are worried about Roe v Wade being overturned. Last I checked it was about choice. Doesn't Palin have a right to make her choice. Just because she choice different than what some would, doesn't make her wrong.

First thoughts: A shift toward Obama

Maybe Sarah is a light wieght, unlike Biden, and the rest of the "heavy wieghts" that have managed to run the greatest nation in the world to ruin. Look at Washington, do you like what you see? Most of these bloated, corrupt, self serving Heavy Wieghts have been wallowing in the public trough all their lives. I think we need new blood, fresh ideas, people that haven't been bought by big money and corruption. Could they do any worse?

First thoughts: A shift toward Obama

Wasn't it rude for Senator McCain to not at one time make eye contact with Senator Obama. Even in the photo shown as they were shaking hands afterwards, he didn't even look him in the face, as if he was not worth recognizing. This was just totally unnecessary and has nothing to do with making your points in a debate, except trying to say that a person is not even worth acknowledging ... how sick!
