WASHINGTON (AP) -- The annual income for Illinois Sen. Barack Obama and his wife dropped about $680,000 in 2006 from the nearly $1.7 million they took in the prior year, according to documents released Monday.

Information released by the Chicago Democrat's presidential campaign indicated that the Obamas' total income decreased because in 2005 they had a major book deal and a one-time bonus.

Their 2006 income of $991,296 included Obama's salary of $157,082 and his wife's administrator's pay of $273,618 from the University of Chicago Hospitals and $51,200 in director fees from a food distributor, TreeHouse Inc.

What a shame, their salary went down from $1.7 in 2005 (yes, because of the book deal) to $991,296 in 2006. OH PLEASE. Even without the book deal, there is no way the Obamas were in any kind of financial bind.

I know this wouldn't make for smart campaigning, but I'd like someone to note how colleges and universities have done nothing for decades to control their own costs.

Inflation has been somewhere between 2 and 3 percent for most of the time since the 1980s. Yet college tuition has risen by nearly 7 percent a year.

That's a delta of, say, 4.5 percent. This means the actual cost of college doubles every 10 years, and even when adjusted for surrounding inflation, doubles ever 16 years.

That type of inflation is unsustainable. So what do the colleges do? Look for bailouts - either from alumnists or from the government - while simultaneously raising tuition and fees to the point where many just won't be able to go.

I can't wait for the Obama's to get into the White House. I am waiting to see how they help me with the $200,000.00 debt I hanging over my head to go to college and law school. My great salary (ha,ha) is barely enough to pay my rent and the $2,500 per month in student loan paybacks...Maybe after they get in I can save on the monthly health insurance check I send so that I can see a doctor when needed. I will surely be looking forward to all the government help that will be coming my way once the Obama's take over!

You represent the best possibilities of public school kids. I have been teaching for 29 years, I benefited from public schools, and work in a high school where our kids can afford the best of everything. I enjoy being aroiund them, but the kids I root for are those with bright minds and good hearts who come from the lower ranks financially. I hope they can get a shot. I got mine in the 70s when school was cheap and financial aid was plentiful; I want them to have it, too.

- Those who are mired in student loan debt - like me
- Those who are mired in medical bills because insurance doesn't pay everything or close to enough - like me
- Those who dream of owning their own business and making a dream come true with that high priced education that they are still paying off, but can't because they can't get individual healthcare insurance for their "special needs" child - like me
- Those who want their children to go to college without being mired in debt, own a home, and retire like their grandparents, but see no viable way to make that happen on their current income - like me!
- Those who worry about their mothers who haven't lived in their own homes in years because they can't afford to pay their rent, have insurance, and pay for the car and gas to get them to work - like me!

There are people who want to stand up for these things! There are people who want to see our country restored, our promise restored, and our hope restored. They are right in front of us and all we have to do is go to the polls on Nov. 4 (or earlier if you can) and make the choice to say - YES WE CAN!!!
