Like every other shaky position he’s taken on the economic crisis, McCain’s analysis of the root cause of the problem has completely changed over the course of the last couple weeks. On September 15, John fumbled around for a message after the weekend Wall Street meltdown. In the morning he repeated his well-worn stump line that the fundamentals of our economy are strong, only to abruptly shift a couple hours later and call it a crisis in which the fundamentals are at great risk.

John went on to assign the blame, saying “they are threatened and at risk because some on Wall Street have treated Wall Street like a casino.'' "We're going to reform the way that Wall Street does business and put an end to the greed that has driven our markets into chaos. We'll stop multimillion-dollar payouts to CEOs that have broken the public trust." Later in the week he decided the real culprit was the chairman of the SEC and called for his resignation.

On 60 Minutes the following Sunday John was asked: “In 1999 you were one of the senators who helped pass deregulation of Wall Street. Do you regret that now?” John responded: “No, I think the deregulation was probably helpful to the growth of our economy.” But then he went on to characterize Wall Street as follows: “It's basically a Ponzi scheme, as you know, that sooner or later was gonna collapse.” Huh?

Now John wants to tell the wide-eyed children among us a very different story. Instead of the greedy Wall Street CEOs or chairman Cox, John has found a whole new cast of villains. John now claims that the entire global financial meltdown has been caused by Fannie, Freddie, the sinister ACORN, and in a shocking surprise; Barack Obama! Simple stories for simple minds, I guess.

NEW YORK Surprising a letter to the editor published in th New York Times today, the chief prosecutor of the Weather Undeground in the 1970s expressed outrage over the linking of Barack Obama to Bill Ayers by the McCain campaign, adding, "Although I dearly wanted to obtain convictions against all the Weathermen, including Bill Ayers, I am very pleased to learn that he has become a responsible citizen."

William C. Ibershof also corrects a charge in the Times: "I do take issue with the statement in your news article that the Weathermen indictment was dismissed because of 'prosecutorial misconduct.' It was dismissed because of illegal activities, including wiretaps, break-ins and mail interceptions, initiated by John N. Mitchell, attorney general at that time, and W. Mark Felt, an F.B.I. assistant director."

Felt, of course (you may have already forgotten) was also known as a guy called "Deep Throat."

As the lead federal prosecutor of the Weathermen in the 1970s (I was then chief of the criminal division in the Eastern District of Michigan and took over the Weathermen prosecution in 1972), I am amazed and outraged that Senator Barack Obama is being linked to William Ayers’s terrorist activities 40 years ago when Mr. Obama was, as he has noted, just a child.

Although I dearly wanted to obtain convictions against all the Weathermen, including Bill Ayers, I am very pleased to learn that he has become a responsible citizen.

One thing that never gets reported in the anti-ACORN frenzy is that ACORN, like all people registering voters, must by law turn in all forms that they collect. Otherwise, Democrats/Republicans would throw out forms from voters they don't want in order to disqualify them. They are absolutely not allowed to take out the duplicates or Donald Duck/Hans Solo forms that are put in by either hourly contractors padding their numbers or by wisea## people saying, "Sure, I'll sign your form" and then putting a phony name down.

From what I understand, ACORN attempts to flag suspicious forms so Election Boards can review them but they would be liable if they remove them from their submissions.

If someone attempts to vote under a false name, then you have election fraud but this "bad forms" thing is a phony scandal.

Am I the only person who is sick and tired of hearing who Barack Obama had dinner with over 10 years ago? Who in their career hasn't met someone innocently only to find out their ties were questionable? We do what he did - disassociate ourselves and move on. That's what the voters are doing to the Republican party now - disassociating themselves and finding a coherent, strong message with Obama-Biden. Obama keeps pivoting back to the message of the hour, and it's the economy. McCain keeps pivoting to a dinner party. If a dinner party and bad mortgage buyback idea are all that McCain-Palin have in their bag of tricks, they need to move off the political stage and let Obama-Biden take this country to safer, higher ground. They see the tide turning and on Nov 4, we will all welcome the change we've been promised - Obama-Biden!!

In Letter to 'NYT,' Man Who Prosecuted Weather Underground Hits Linking Ayers to Obama

NEW YORK In a surprising a letter to the editor published in the New York Times today, the chief prosecutor of the Weather Underground in the 1970s expressed outrage over the linking of Barack Obama to Bill Ayers by the McCain campaign, adding, "Although I dearly wanted to obtain convictions against all the Weathermen, including Bill Ayers, I am very pleased to learn that he has become a responsible citizen."

William C. Ibershof also corrects a charge in the Times: "I do take issue with the statement in your news article that the Weathermen indictment was dismissed because of 'prosecutorial misconduct.' It was dismissed because of illegal activities, including wiretaps, break-ins and mail interceptions, initiated by John N. Mitchell, attorney general at that time, and W. Mark Felt, an F.B.I. assistant director."

Felt, of course (you may have already forgotten) was also known as a guy called "Deep Throat."

As the lead federal prosecutor of the Weathermen in the 1970s (I was then chief of the criminal division in the Eastern District of Michigan and took over the Weathermen prosecution in 1972), I am amazed and outraged that Senator Barack Obama is being linked to William Ayers’s terrorist activities 40 years ago when Mr. Obama was, as he has noted, just a child.

Although I dearly wanted to obtain convictions against all the Weathermen, including Bill Ayers, I am very pleased to learn that he has become a responsible citizen.

Because Senator Obama recently served on a board of a charitable organization with Mr. Ayers cannot possibly link the senator to acts perpetrated by Mr. Ayers so many years ago.

Please... please... please... I really hope this scenario happens in the next (and final) debate:

Obama turning to McCain and asking (point-blank), "John, yes or no, do you think I am a terrorist?"
McCain would almost certainly answer "no".
To which Obama could respond, "Then why are you, your running mate, and your surrogates trying to portray me like one, and trying to suggest that I am supportive of terrorism?"

That type of conversation/confrontation should crack down on the Ayers discussion.

Please America, remember the terrible loses of John and Bobby Kennedy - Martin Luther King..... Palin is truly totally out of control and it is quite freightening that no one - not the press - not the parties - are holding her accountable. With regard to McCain...... Let’s hear a bit of The Keating Five, McCain’s ties to the Iran-Contra Connections, Cindy McCains fathers long time relationship with mobster Kemper Marley and John McCain’s ties to Joe Bonanno. Why was McCain invited to a mobsters birthday party? Or we could talk about Cindy McCain being a drug addict just a few short years ago. Palin and The Alaskan Independence Party. The republican party has really opened the door to all of these topics.
