Dr. Gates is a great American. Mr. Obama would be wise to keep him on for an indefinite period of time (most likely about a year). Gates understands the chain of command; he will serve his commander-in-chief, regardless of party.

Why not just ask Gates to stay on for an unspecified time, based largely on progress in removing most of our troops from Iraq.

At the same time, name Chuck Hagel as SOS, with the intention of transferring Hagel to SOD when Gates steps down.

Hagel is the logical eventual SOD, but an intial Natl. Security team of Hagel, Gates and Biden would be respected by most Americans.

Speaking of SOS, I'm not sure why Gen. Wes Clark's name hasn't been mentioned by the media? That is the position he has always wanted (and is qualified), and someone well respected by the military would help Obama with military families.

I think it would be good for Obama to keep Gates on, at least for a while. He is a good and competent Defense Secretary and seems to be willing to work with the new administration. Obama is going to need more people like this who are willing to put partisanship aside for the good of the country.

There are many members of the Democrat Party that could serve and do so more effectively and possess much higher character than Robert Gates has. "Robert M. Gates" is the title of Chapter 16 of "Iran-Contra: The Final Report". He has always been a lair and a crook, not just during this current administration. Continuing Gates as Secretary of Defense should never even have been considered.

President (elect) Obama needs to select the best the country has to offer regardless of party affiliation. We are in too big of a mess to play the partisan games that have racked Washington for so long. If Mr. Gates is the top person for the job he should be kept on.
