See that's just it, and the liberals can't for the life of them figure it out. Bush has run the country like a liberal, spending money he doesn't have. The Republicans have strayed from the fiscal conservative message, and have gotten their butts handed to them. The job of the Republicans is not to be moderates, but to be right-wing conservatives on all fronts. Just like the Democrats running off into la-la liberal land and winning, the Republicans now are free to do the same, except by going to the right. Obama didn't win because more liberals were created, he won because conservatives stayed home. A good old Ronnie Reagan type needs to come along to straighten things out. And after 4 years of Obama, or Clinton II by the way his appointments are going (Obama sure gave up on that 'Change' theme pretty quick), the Democrats will be ripe for the pickings.

What we find time and again in our economic system is that we can not trust those who ‘have’ to behave responsibly. Greed is apparently a pretty intoxicating drug and it corrupts, absolutely. She was far too willing to read a teleprompter that spewed hate and falsehoods. To be a Standard Bearer – I believe you have to actually HAVE standards. It seems like a simple, little thing; but clearly it escapes her. To watch her continue to whine and contrive with Matt and Greta is really ENOUGH. To hear her say that “…these ‘anonymous’ allegations are unfair…” and that “…if these journalists would do a little bit of research, they would find out the truth…”! Well many of us felt the same way about her! If she hadn’t been so willing to completely LIE about Obama, maybe I wouldn’t wish her back to the rock from whence she crawled. She has accepted no responsibility for her own ignorance, she was quick to lash out at Clinton for being a whiner and now she has nothing of importance to say; but she just can’t seem to cure her addiction for the microphone and the camera. She will never earn my respect until she accepts with grace her own flaws, educates herself on national and international topics (I don’t mean rote memorization of facts – I mean intellectual curiosity where she formulates HER OWN opinion based on knowledge of the facts. I will not accept Rush Limbaugh’s cliff notes du jour) and apologizes to the country for the scorched earth tactics she so eagerly employed. To be a government leader – you have to accept a diverse constituency with a multitude of complex and varying opinions and you have to be willing to govern ALL of America, not just the counties you perceive to be the REAL America. Okay, now that I’ve typed this, I changed my mind – her fifteen minutes are up and I will never respect her – even if she could do all of the above, I would never trust that it was because of deeply held principles; but that she were doing it to win some votes. Pat, Boston: I am back on this No John Kerry for a cabinet post. Not because I don’t think he’d be outstanding; but because MA would really lose out on some Senior chairmanship opportunities. I can understand why someone would want to be POTUS, even with the problems we are facing. What is a mystery to me is why anyone would want to be Chairman of the RNC. In addition to the right-wing nuts (Rush Limbaugh and Pat Buchanan) fighting the more intelligent conservatives, (George Will); there will be the moderates fighting the conservatives. The fighting is just beginning and it is anybody's guess who will be left standing. What seems important to me is who has the PERSONAL STRENGTH, power, and intelligence to manage these forces? Answer: No One at the present time. If Sarah Palin goes there, she will be dog meat. The CW is that it is better to be in the fight early. But Newt Gingrich will lay in the weeds and later come out as the Conservative Candidate.

I think that the Republicans and the media are overlooking one serious point where the Republicans have turned off the public, and therefore, the electorate: Divisive, fear-mongering politics. I think the public has rejected the usual politics of the Republicans and they don't want to hear the smears and the "we might not be safe with Democrats" crap anymore. Even when the Dems started to panic when Obama wasn't "hitting back" on the smears that John McCain and his pet Sarah were slinging, no holds barred, Obama remained steady and focused on his message. Americans in large part respected him for it. Conversely, they lost respect for McCain and his campaign for the divisive and inflammatory (and untrue) rhetoric.
I am not a Republican, and I don't care what they're going to do to "regroup" or "resurge" or whatever, but they are still missing one big point. Americans are tired of Palin-esque attacks on people and they are tired of being manipulated with fear and thinly veiled racism. If the Republicans want to change something within their party, that is their starting point.

I might agree with Saul Anuzis' assertion that when the Repub party "once again adheres to [its] core values and beliefs, and can again demonstrate to America that [it] can be trusted on those issues, we will make a comeback – stronger than ever" -- if only I knew WHICH core values and beliefs he's referring to. If he's talking about the social/culture issues (much of what is included in the party platform that was just updated prior to their convention in MN), then I think he's AS WRONG AS HE COULD BE (at least in terms of getting any kind of a majority).

In any case, the next head of the RNC will have a BIG JOB ahead of them: first, getting consensus on what the core values & beliefs ARE; and second, communicating/selling those to the country. Lots of luck!

The republican party fell into the same trap that the democratic party fell into-a fractured message dictated by the groups on the fringes.

The democrats have only recently begun to understand that candidates have to represent their districts' views in order to be elected-witness the election of several 'dixiecrats' in recent elections.

Unfortunately, the election of a far left liberal from Illinois will spoil the fun. When Obama begins to implement his agenda, those blue congressional districts will turn red again, and control of congress will shift parties as it did when Clinton was president.

The GOP needs to get back to a core message, while allowing more moderate representatives of the party run in states that demand more 'liberal' candidates; however, the principals of the party-smaller government, lower taxes, strong national defense, respect for individual rights-must not be abandoned. They can add energy independance to that list, as it is a national security issue. Let the Democrats keep the NIMBY's; they are nothing more than a small and highly vocal minority.

Having power for too long has a deleterious effect on political parties-ANY party. The republican party is in a position to right the ship, and move forward in two years, provided they learn from their mistakes.

But if the republicans ever want another chance to control America they need to realize that taxes build roads, pay for schools, pay for all those nice government pensions, WARS, etc. They need to suggest something other than tax cuts because those of us with real brains know that if you spend tax dollars on infrastructure the returns usually come back to the economy 7 fold. Money spent on wars might as well be flushed down the toilet. Under the Bush administration the country was run by a bunch of wild-eyed radicals who put power, theology and their pet theories above country, tradition, constitution, principle and people. Let me offer a little free advice to the RNC: do some freaking focus groups and find out what the voters have to say. We keep being told how the RNC plans to rebuild the Party but without listening to why the voters in previously red states went blue there will be no recapturing of the national vote. My family in Indiana went Obama for the first time since Carter. The post election comment I heard the most was how angry voters were for being dismissed as anti American for voting for Obama. Questioning the patriotism of the candidates meant the patriotism of the supporters was also in question. So in Indiana at least, the GOP might want to start with a humble apology.
