if we bail out banks and not the auto industry, we are showing how hypocritical the government it. protecting wall street and its rich investors but driving the lifeblood of middle class labor into the ground because of simple greed.

the big 3 should all be reorganized to a modern archtype, and perhaps saturn executives should be placed in the lead in reorganization for the big 3. they have shown a solid business model for autos in the states, and could easily turn around an industry that is vital in keeping our citizens at work.

that said, this bailout would need much more oversight and reorganization than was passed in the bank bailout. the big 3 must make gasoline efficiency to the tune of 40 miles per gallon in the next year, and have 10% of their cars run on natural gas or biofuels. The tractor trailer and industrial machines must be converted over to natural gas and biodiesel and we need to set up an infrastructure for those fuels...

biofuel is the future, and if Europe can have planes flying on biofuels, there is no reason that we can't use them here.

Nobody has a right to blame the management at the automakers. Ford and Chrysler's management has only been in place for 2 years, GM's a little longer. it takes AT LEAST 4 years to bring a new product to production in the auto industry and that's when everything is going perfectly(and they're far from running perfectly right now). These guys haven't been running their companys long enough to truly impact change. However, I believe, based on statements made by them (particularly Alan Mullaly of Ford) over the last few years, that they see the problems and are working on changes, the general public must understand that the auto industry is a slow industry and it takes years to adapt. If these management teams had been in place a decade ago, we would not be in this situation.

If I were to invest in an industry as an individual I would want to invest in an industry that showed viability and a willingness to make the tough choices and the quick drastic changes necessary for success.

No taxpayer money should go to any auto industry unless that industry presented re-tooling and restructuring plans and legitimate time tables to meet the demands necessary for success (fuel efficient, energy saving, reliable and safe vehicles at an affordable price that your average American can afford).

It's hard for me to drum up any sympathy for the auto industry. Instead of manufacturing Hummers, Suburbans, etc. they should've been manufacturing energy vehicles LONG before this fall out. I do feel sorry for the workers who will be the scapegoat in this mess.

Terrorism sponsored by a modern political state is shrinking. Terrorism is being more and more sponsored by groups that are harder to track and control. Qadhafi is joining the growing number of countries that are not sponsoring terrorism; if he could only have some influence on those wealthy that sponsor it and get them to stop. I just don't think that is going to happen.
