The econominc problems we're having are due, in part, to the vast amount of EMPTY DEBT we have incurred, as in, there's nothing to show for the money spent -- the whole mortgage fiasco was a giant shell game. Yes, infrastructure projects would increase the debt, but we'd end up with SOMETHING -- a sorely needed improved infrastructure -- and the money we spent on it would go to the workers and material suppliers, who would in turn spend it on goods and services, and so on. Not an overnight fix, but a heck of a lot more sound than just throwing money at wall street, and main street gets a piece of the pie.

No this was not just caused by too much debt - it was caused by too much debt incurred developing nothing.

When you borrow money and incur debt and invest it wisely, you make more money and repay the debt and end up with more than you borrowed or started with.

You dont squander it in tax cuts for the rich that flees out of the country, to companies that invest and outsource, to 10 billion a month in a war with now no determined just cause and no reward, to name a few acts of poor debt.

But yes debt might be the only way left to get well now if you know how to spend wisely. If I can borrow some money now I will show some of this ideaologues how to make money and end up with no debt. Didnt Clinton turn a deficit into budget surplus?

When will Uh-rack Uh-bam-uh assert that he wants to "change the tone in Washington"?

Is this governors meeting the Uh-bam-uh equivalent of inviting Ted Kennedy for dinner and a movie? I hope the tone changes as much as it did for Bush.

Seriously, the other day I counted the "uh's" for one minute of Uh-bam-uh's press conference. 15, or one about every four seconds before I quit counting. And that didn't even count the "kay?'s" at the end of several short statements.

My guess is that if I watch Obama's statements on TV, I'll find that FR left out the "uh's".

I'll know we're in trouble when the "y'knows" start to creep in. 'Kay?

I have high standards for my PE and so far he's falling short. It's all about the "uh's". But maybe I'm misunderestimating him.

By the way Indie Woman, when Bill Clinton's tech bubble burst, there really was nothing left. At least this time there are houses.

Something must be done to get the economy moving and spending on infrastructure looks like one of the more promising ways to do that. Most of the economists I've read have been recommending just that type of "investment" since before the election.

I can't imagine any way to free up spending that doesn't increase the debt.

You got it all wrong. The "stimulus package" that Obama wants to enact is nothing more than giving people free money and supposedly 2.5 million "work fare" program jobs. Cleaning up streets and building new roads and bridges will improve economy only if these jobs and government spending end up improving the efficiency of this transportation dependent economy of ours. Given the well developed infrastructure of ours, that's not likely to happen. You might as well be handing out 2.5 million additional welfare checks, which as history shows, is not going to do a lot for the economy. It'll only increase the national debt. The way to jump start the economy is to do away with capital gains taxes and slash corporate taxes which will boost confidence in the entire system, which by itself will boost the stock market and ease the credit crunch. If Obama announce such move for next year along with immediate freeze of federal spending at the present level, the recession will be over by the spring of next year. Do you think he'll do that? I'm not holding my breath.

I agree with "Indie" in Denver. This is the basic Monetary policy stuff we learned in Macro-Economics. It has been demonstrated that infrastructure spending (even though it incurs more debt) actually helps to bring the economy out of the kind of recession we are in. The debt incurred has to be spent in such a way as to "give back to the people" though to have that effect. This is precisely why I wholeheartedly support the measures that Obama has proposed. The long-term effects of infrastructure spending, much like that after the Great Depression, has positive overall impact on the general economy.
