When I heard Hutchison's name come up I sent this lady's Wiki article to the Repub's I work with to educate them about her (because though I'm a Obama guy, they know I'm a political moderate and that I try to be fair.) I'm an Obama guy but if McCain had picked Hutchison for VP he might well be president today. She's got a higher conservative rating from the American Conservative Union than McCain. She's actually qualified and educated, and her fencesitting on abortion would appeal to the middle because it reflects where a lot of people are. (She's voted for a lot of restrictions on abortion but doesn't seem to want R v W overturned.) And obviously you have the female angle. Alas for the Repubs, McCain lacked the courage to rankle his party even a little bit on the life issue and made the outcome inevitable. Ms. Hutchison must look at her resume beside Palin's and retch... To be totally fair, there was also word though that she wanted to be gov. of Texas more than VP, so maybe she said that to McCain. But somehow I doubt it. Even if that was the case, I think she could've been persuaded to be VP over Gov, and could've ran for Gov. anyway if they lost.

Most of us Dems thought you got screwed by John McCain. If he would have picked a smart Republican woman, such as yourself, he'd have been much better off. Don't sell yourself short, being a governor does not NECESSARILY make you qualified to by VP. Even if you can see Mexico from your 'backyard'.

Actually it sounds like a smart move on Kay's part. I've sometimes wondered why people who live in states with beautiful scenery and warm weather would want to live in Washington. It opens the door if she wants to compete against silly Sarah, or she can stay put and enjoy Texas.
Kay is a smart lady, I can't think of many who would want to run against her.

There are no term limits in Texas, but Perry's popularity is low. Texas is changing politically and becoming more purple on its way to becoming blue perhaps in the next decade or so. Hutchison is a moderate and favors abortion rights, etc. With a changing demographis, she would likely unseat Perry in a primary and most likely face Chris Bell. Bell has been very high profile since coming in 2nd in a four way race last time around so he has a chance, but against Hutchison, not a great one. She is someone we more progresive voters could accept and possibly support. I think she has the best chance to be our next governor. I'll probably support Bell, but she could get might vote. Perry never could.

For AATomms: Is there something wrong with supporting minorities and women? Its not wrong to want to treat people the right way.

Kay "Baby" Hutchison is an idiot. She has never had an original thought and her only claim to fame is the ability to memorize talking points.

I live here. I KNOW how totally worthless she is. I'm glad she is running for Governor because maybe we will get some decent representation in the Senate after she leaves. She and Rick Perry are 2 sides of the same coin so I don't care which one wins the primary for Governor. The job has no real power and any loser can handle it.

Now Lieutenant Governor - that's another story. Don't know who is seeking that post yet.

As a Democrat, I have to say, if McCain really wanted a woman on his ticket, Hutchinson seemed like one of the most qualified he could have chosen. Personally, I think he could have won if she had been his VP candidate. I am not 100% familiar with her politics, but, whenever I have seen her in interviews, she has always struck me as a straight shooter who has no problem telling it like it is. Even if I don't necessarily agree with someone else's viewpoints, I can still respect them. She is someone I respect. It is a shame she wasn't chosen as VP. I think Texans would be lucky to have her as their Governor.

Let me say I think Clara in KC is really smart. And let me add that any criticism of another comes in many fashions. One is where such people are criticized unfairly and do nothing to ask for such criticism. Then you have the other type who while not necessarily seeking criticism do place themselves in positions where they can be easily criticized. I think Tina Fey can attest to this type. In any case, it is well known that Palin fits the second category. If one does not want to be the jester to be laughed at, criticized and scorned then one has to learn not to act like a jester. Palin would do herself a big favor if she were to return to Alaska and do her job as Governor. But as Clara in KC might say, and to which I would agree, even such a request for Palin to go home and Govern Alaska just might be too big of a challenge for someone who is also challenged intellectually.

Kay Bailey Hutchison is a moderate Republican in Texas, but would be very conservative if she was from New York. Rick (Good Hair) Perry was only re-elected because there was no strong opposition. The door is wide open for a new Texas governor. The next democratic rival for Texas governor is unknown, but Bill White is a good bet. Hutchison would win in a close race against Bill White, but Perry loses against White.

I would offer, though, that while criticism of Sarah Palin seems to be sport for everyone on this site, none of us are governors of states. And governors with pretty high approval ratings to boot. So obviously, the woman has something going for her. I'm not going to claim she's a deep intellectual because clearly she's not. But she does know how to govern-managing a several billion dollar budget and 25,000 employees is not something many of us could manage. And she was defeated-so perhaps Clara in KC, and many others on this site, could be gracious in victory.

I sure won't vote for her. She is an awful Senator. It doesn't matter all that much however because in Texas the more important position is who is elected Lieutenant Governor. They have much more power over legislation than the Governor does. I'm quite happy she is moving out of the Senate because there are many Texas pols of higher caliber who want that seat. I would prefer a Democrat but even some of the Republicans who might head for the seat would better serve the nations interests than she has. All in all a most unimpressive woman.
