From NBC's Domenico MontanaroPresident George W. Bush struck a wistful and, at times, defensive and defiant tone at a press conference he called the "ultimate exit interview."

Bush defended his plicies and determination to the end. His reliance on himself is one of his strong points, NEVER letting public opinion bother him, just letting it roll off his shoulder.

Abraham Lincoln had the same critics and the same character as GWB. Even Obama admired Lincoln.

Bush wished Obama well in his endeavor as the new president, being as gracious as possible.

While many of those on this blog will diss Bush, remember that Obama is already being heavily criticized by his own party, from everything from Rick Warren to a generally conservative approach to his presidency, despite appointing a mostly liberal team of past Clinton aides. And BHO's Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, leaned much toward President Bush's policies, including the war in Iraq.

Good luck to President Bush and incoming president Barack Obama.

Bush said he could go home and look himself in the mirror and say he didn't cave to any person or group.
Too bad we all can't do the same.

Bush -- wistful, defiant, defensive to end

Does anyone know exactly how many press conferences Bush actually did over the last 8 years? Something tells me I can count them on all my fingers, and still have one left over to give him as he leaves.

BTW - as for the Giants, well, there's always next season.

Bush -- wistful, defiant, defensive to end

He had FUN????????? There has not been another attack on this country since 9-11 which I believe is a tribute to the president. It is all of this useless namecalling and sarcastic remarks that keep Washington functioning in this riduculous manner. He was our president for eight years and don't forget that it was the people who put him there regardless of all of the nonsense that took place in Florida. As a retired military person I believe that history will judge George Bush in a much more favorable light than some criticisers are willing to do.

Bush -- wistful, defiant, defensive to end

Paul P

How many vets have you talked with? I have I and know the horrors that are not broadcast on the liberal mainstream networks.....our efforts there are saving the lives of countless of women and children who are murdered without remorse simply because of who they are. We have made a difference and your attitude is disrespectful to the 4,000 brave young men and women who gave their life to this cause....I am product of what we have done in Iraq! Go talk to some vets and you will find out what I am talking about

Bush -- wistful, defiant, defensive to end

Yes, we really did "misunderestimate" him. did he really mean to say that?

Bush -- wistful, defiant, defensive to end

First I want to thank President Bush for serving this country for 8 years. If you like or dislike a president it's still a tough job, and I wish Obama the best luck (I did not vote for him).

To Ed from San Antonio, please get over the race problem everything that goes wrong for a black person in not a white persons falt. Hell check the crime stats there are MUCH more black on black crime in this country then white on black. If you look further there is much more black on white crime also, check your facts before you put your big dumb fingers to work on a comment form.

Now to Ted K. from Hyannis, MA you hit the nail right on the head, the first response to the Katrina victims should have come from the mayor and the governor of the state, hell the feds were on the way. These two did NOTHING to help their citizens and then blamed it all on Bush, what a crock!

I feel sorry for all you Bush haters, because when things go bad once Obama is in office who are you going to blame? What I know lets just keep blaming Bush for everything, it will never be Obama's fault...Why you ask well because the media will never bash him because he's 1/2 black.

Finally, Mr. Obama I did not vote for you because of your policy and programs you want to put into place, but I do wish you the best and I really hope you do a great job the country needs some help right now I hope your up to the challange.

Bush -- wistful, defiant, defensive to end

Marcus in Chicago: You are absolutely right when you say that Bush did a lot with regards to helping Aids victims in Africa. Look at the state of our economy. Look at the state of our standing in the world. Look at the state of New Orleans today. I finally felt I undertstood his motives. I thought he was very passionate about his country and did do what he thought was best with the knowledge he had and how effected he was by 9-11. The rest of us were impacted but have lost loved ones from needless violance, accidents, and lack of medical expertise or coverage. Maybe we are fortunate there have been no new attacks and that is better than all the other changes we now live with everyday because of that over-riding goal. Americans die in all kinds of ways everyday, but it is with dignity when you die standing for something rather than live by perpertrating violance on others or just allowing substandard lives for others because so much is spent in defense of a way a life not shared by all Americans. I wish he could have talked with that compassion more often instead of what often sounded like arrogance and lack of concern for what others were experiencing from his decisions. Maybe he would have been even able to open his mind and heart to what Obama and many, many Americans are saying. What we all will die for is ideals, freedom and each other, not for money, oil and to spare some Americans while others die.

Bush -- wistful, defiant, defensive to end

It's funny in an ironic sort of way. The Democrats who've run Congress for the past two years had absolutely NO part in our faltering economy? Oh wait, it was Barney Frank who wrote the legislation in the late 1990s that exploded in the subprime mortgage loans, in fact requiring banks to make risky loans to people who can't afford them (Clinton signed it into law; look it up). But that's Bush's fault. Bush is arrogant and disrespectful? Have you been paying attention to how Hollywood and the media treat any Republican and how kids-gloved they are with Obama? Wow. That's right; Democrats are "inclusive" and Republicans not so. Sure, just don't disagree with the Democrats and you're included. Otherwise, you'll be villified with the gross amount of hatred you see here in the forums for Bush. Bush did a lot of things wrong, but so did Clinton. Maybe if Bush and his pals had read the intelligence reports, took notice of what they said, and did something about them, maybe the disaster that happened on 9/11 wouldn't have occurred. If you are praising Dubya for preventing any other attacks then you have to hold him responsible for the one that did happen. And if you think 3000 Americans killed on that day is horrific then so is 4000 American soldiers dying in Iraq. Those soldiers died because of a decision that Dubya made. And yes, I hold him responsible for their deaths. I find it amazing how you Bush lovers say that we are there because Saddam was killing his own people but you don't blink an eye when you hear that this war has caused the death of thousands upon thousands of Iraqi civilians.

You can say and think what you like but for most people in this country and the world, George W. Notice these bunch of whiners never accept any responsibility for their actions all the while blaming liberals or the liberal press for every thing. These ditto heads are so ignorant that facts never ever enter their posts. These cowards hide behind their party and question everybody else's patriotism, but do not ask them fight for america. They will never leave their momma's house. Keep dviding up america repubs, it is the only way they can gain power. Remember a republican will say anything and do nothing to get elected. For the republicans it is all about using fear to control. Notice the cowards remarking about how we have not been attacked? Talk about your cowardly lions, why do they need to attack us here, when they can kill americans in Iraq or Afghanistan? So to qoute, that we have not been attacked, is your typical ignorant response from cowards that never ever will fight for our country. So republicans keep trying to scare your fellow americans and courage is something a person has to earn. I notice a lot of courage lacking in the republican responses. It is easier to slander, villify, and demonize your fellow americans then to stand up and fight for your country.

Bush -- wistful, defiant, defensive to end

I should have kept reading. I see there are more who agree that Pres. Bush isn't the worst pres. in history.

Name a president who hasn't made some mistakes. You cannot. I hope Pres.-Elect Obama does a good job; I KNOW that the media and others will treat him so much better than Pres. Bush. It's unfortunate but true. Anything Pres. Bush did well was brushed aside but any mistakes were magnified for instance:

The lie : Pres. Bush doesn't care about blacks, just look at the Katrina response.

The Truth :

Who had more blacks in positions of power in a presidential administration? No, not Pres. Clinton, Pres. Bush.

Who had the highest % of black homeownership? Pres. Bush.

Who gave more to fight aids in Africa? Again, not Pres. Clinton, but President George W. Bush.

Just one example of how the media and others have worked against Pres. Bush. Hopefully next time we have a Republican president you will not repeat these ways, ways that, at times, were tantamount to treason. (Just look at some of the statements by people like Harry Reid that said we were losing and the Iraq war was lost, etc.)

Good luck Pres. Obama, we all hope you succeed.

Bush -- wistful, defiant, defensive to end

Bush is in complete denial about what his administration did or did not do. This administration will not look good in 5, 10, 20, even 100 years or more. Bush and Cheney walk away from a mountain of problems...most of which were self-created. We are deep, deep in debt and not any safer than before 9/11. The Bushies have made many more enemies for the USA and few friends we can count on for support. While no one envies the perils of the job that President Obama is about to undertake, most Americans breathe a sigh of relief that, at last, a competent, wise but humble leader will soon govern our nation. It is hilarious for Bush to compare himself, in any way, to other wartime presidents. Does he honestly believe that history will rank himself with the likes of Lincoln or FDR? No president, in recent memory...except maybe Nixon, has done more to divide us. His lame excuses for the blunders of Katrina would be laughable...if they were not so tragic. This was a national leader who needed to see video of people on the rooftops of New Orleans before he was convinced there was a problem. While any other president in another time would have faced impeachment for catastrophes like Iraq and Katrina, George W. Bush will not escape the tribunal of history. The vast majority of the American people are glad he is soon to be back in Texas...doing what he does best...chopping wood and clearing brush. Good riddance!!!

Bush -- wistful, defiant, defensive to end

For those carping about how so many diss President Bush, I remember being taught that for one to get respect one must give respect. He has given no one any respect and should not expect any in return.

His aids efforts in Africa may be one of the few good things he has in his legacy. Just like the symbol for yin and yang there is a little yin in the yang and a little yang in the yin. This is how nature keeps things balanced.

As a supervisor of people with a degree etc. I can assure you Bush is no leader. Sure we all make mistakes but a leader that learns from his mistakes and corrects them makes him a stronger and better leader. A stubborn ass is no leader.

Just because we have not seen a major attack on the US during his watch doesn't necessarily reflect on his leadership. We had no attacks during most of our presidents' terms in office. So what? He did, at that time, what was expected of him. I thought he might actually be a reasonably good president. Unfortunately by the middle of September 2001 it was obvious he was not. He did what the experts told him to do in this kind of situation as would have happened with any president. The conspiracy theory of him having a part in the 9/11 attacks seems far fetched but they whirled around for quite some time.

Bush's legacy is what he made it. Most of us, whether we voted for him or not, had high hopes that his term(s) would be great. Unfortunately we were greatly disappointed. Unfortunately some folks took a bit longer than others to see the light about him and his life of failure.

Obama is not afraid of AlQaeda or anyone else. He believes, as most of us do and former presidents did, negotiate, use diplomacy, use sanctions, blocades but use war as a last resort. Bush and his most ardent supporters are jingoists. They love war for the sake of war. They will give all sorts of excuses for going to war.

I believe it was one of Hitler's top lieutenants who stated that people don't want war but we can justify it by telling them that the enemy is at the city gates waiting to spring on us. For detractors call them unpatriotic and possibly call them traitors. (Sound familiar?)

I am willing to give Obama a chance to fix things. His attitude and ideas seem pretty good, so far, but if he screws up I will be among the first to criticize him. Democracy thrives on dissent and difference of opinion. Totalitarianism depends on total agreement with fearless leader at all times.

Unlike Bush, Obama has already shown that he learns from his mistakes and strives to improve. I like that in a leader.

I don't hate Bush, I hate what he and his Administration have done to this great land of ours. George W. Bush seems like a decent sort of fellow. The kind of person you'd sit and have a beer with but not presidential material. That has become so very evident over the past 8 years.

De Nile is a river in Egypt and to deny he has screwed up shows how out of touch with reality he and his ardent supporters really are. But it takes all kinds of people to make the world. Thank God for them as life would be boring without the odd and crazy people in the world.

Bush -- wistful, defiant, defensive to end

Best, strongest world leader in generations! Thank you, President Bush for kicking butt in the world!

Bush -- wistful, defiant, defensive to end

I voted for President Bush and am disappointed just like everyone else that the past 8 years have gone so poorly. I hope that in the next four years, the citizens of America can rally behind their president and not spend so much time and effort tearing down their leader. The personal attacks and strong hate are embarrassing; it's no wonder the world's view of the U.S. is so negative!

Bush -- wistful, defiant, defensive to end

What is this a Liberal site or what, So much hate from you people. I voted for THe President, Did not agree with all his decisions but know our country is a better, SAFER place because of him.
Also doesn't congress play a huge role in the decisions made over the last 8 years? How can everyone try to blame President Bush for all that has gone done!!!!!!!!
The Republican Congress let us down in 2000-2004 by not following thru with there promises and the Democrats in 2004-2008 stiffled much more.
So lets wake up as a citizenry and demand more out of all of our elected officials!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bush -- wistful, defiant, defensive to end

I am a first time blogger so please excuse me if I don't do this right.

I mailed a thank you card to President Bush this morning. I did so because we feel safe for the time being. We are grateful for not having to go to bed at night listening to bombs in the distance. We are grateful that our familes are safe, as we have children living in different parts of America. We are grateful that we don't have to stand in line for medical care, or food. The list goes on and on. President Bush wasn't perfect, but never in our history did we have a perfect president for you see, they all have one initial flaw - they are human.

Bush -- wistful, defiant, defensive to end

When President Bush came to Kansas State University to do a Landon Lecture he came across as far more intelligent and sensible than he is portrayed elsewhere; he fielded totally idiosyncratic, unrehearsed questions from the audience in a very thoughtful, intelligent, confident manner. I attribute the torture issue to his being misled by Cheney, Rumsfeld, and Yoo. The WMD issue is a challenge because we know Iraq had them at one point, never proved it had destroyed them, and so logically they should have still had them. In fact, it's not clear to me what actually happened to them, so who knows where they are. He has become the man everyone loves to hate and when that occurs, I get suspicious because no one is 100% stupid or bad. He did more than anyone else for HIV work in Africa, severely hurt the Taliban in Afghanistan, did remove Saddam. My main beef is that it cost so much to do all that in treasure and lives that it set us up for a harder hit with this recession than it might otherwise have been. There is a fine line in leadership. I know a lieutenant who could have captured hundreds of Iraqi's in the first Gulf War but didn't realize they were trying to surrender and felt guilty about having erred into their side of the line, so he retreated rather than capturing them. A bit wiser assessment and he would have been a national hero! Instead he was reprimanded for going over the line and had his career busted. The Russian proverb, a bad peace is better than a good war is something President Bush should have thought more about before going into Iraq. But I bet that few told him that. There were some slick dudes pushing for torture and Bush should have just told them their stuff was bullshit, period and fired a few generals early on before they messed up things worse. But he probably didn't have anyone advising him that way either.

Bush -- wistful, defiant, defensive to end

George--just go away and may we never hear your name again.

Bush -- wistful, defiant, defensive to end

He is and will always be a great man. As long as the liberal media DOES NOT write History books, he will do fine. It is funny how MSN only writes the ANTI-BUSH stories and does not give credit To PRESIDENT Bush for all the good he has done.
