I like to think it will be easier to disagree with Obama and be respectful because he won by such a 'mandate'. A lot of pundits quibble over little issues, but I think one of the biggest issues Obama has to face is what to do about Bush and Chaney. Yes, torturing is illegal. It is against the Geneva Convention. It is flat out wrong. Yet the Bush administration condoned it. What is Obama to do? Prosecute because they broke the law? Or show forgiveness of Biblical proportions? I suspect Obama would like to walk away and not address this issue. There will be a lot of critizism that Bush/Cheney should be punished as no one is above the law. To go there would be politics as usual. It will take great wisdom to do the right thing.

“The preponderance of large donors and the fact that so many come from an industry receiving government handouts comes as the president-elect has sought to keep his inauguration free of special interests,” The Journal observed.

I saw the press conference. I finally felt I undertstood his motives. I thought he was very passionate about his country and did do what he thought was best with the knowledge he had and how effected he was by 9-11. As a fellow Texan, I would like to give George W. the benefit of the doubt, but just cannot. He was advised a few years ago of the pending financial crises/disaster and as is his character, ignored them.

He surrounded himself with bad or incompetent characters (Cheney, Brown, etc) and his loyalty blinded good judgement. He can be likeable, but somehow just didn't get it.He was suited to be a Governor, but was in way over his head as President.
He took a budget surplus from Clinton and turned it into a massive deficit thru poor decisions and a questionable war. I suspect history will not be kind to him re his legacy. Probably in the bottom 10-20%.

Honestly, who cares if other countries hate us? I lived overseas, in Europe and S. America, 9 years of my life, before Bush was elected and majority of the people I encountered disliked us then, even while they still went shopping in Miami and New York every chance they got! We will always be hated until we are no longer the greatest and the freest country in the world.

That being said, in the past 8 years, France and Germany have elected conservative leaders that have pledged closer ties with the United States, and even the UK has repeatedly given the Labor party majorities in parliment.

And about Katrina, I live in New Orleans, and that was directly the responsibility of the people of LA for repeatedly electing corrupt, useless Democrats at state and local levels. LA has traditionally been democratic, although they have switched in Presidential elections since 2001, and they are beginning to change at the state and local levels as well because they've realizes how worthless democrats are! There is no comparison between Bobby Jindal and Blanco.

The tone in Washington was set by the total lack of respect on the part of the democrats who refused to work with Bush on every issue. Their strategy for regaining power was the "Two Minute Hate" strategy and coarse as it is, its effective. Say something loud enough and loud enough and people will believe it. I find it comical that the dems are calling for a change in tone!

The people of Texas will welcome Bush with open arms because they understand that he has had to make tough, unpopular decisions. I only hope that BO will have the courage to do the same.

It's unfortunate but true. Anything Pres. Bush did well was brushed aside but any mistakes were magnified for instance:

The lie : Pres. Bush doesn't care about blacks, just look at the Katrina response.

The Truth :

Who had more blacks in positions of power in a presidential administration? No, not Pres. Clinton, Pres. Bush.

Who had the highest % of black homeownership? Pres. Bush.

Who gave more to fight aids in Africa? Again, not Pres. Clinton, but President George W. Bush.

Just one example of how the media and others have worked against Pres. Bush. Hopefully next time we have a Republican president you will not repeat these ways, ways that, at times, were tantamount to treason. (Just look at some of the statements by people like Harry Reid that said we were losing and the Iraq war was lost, etc.)

No president, in recent memory...except maybe Nixon, has done more to divide us. His lame excuses for the blunders of Katrina would be laughable...if they were not so tragic. This was a national leader who needed to see video of people on the rooftops of New Orleans before he was convinced there was a problem. While any other president in another time would have faced impeachment for catastrophes like Iraq and Katrina, George W. Bush will not escape the tribunal of history. For those carping about how so many diss President Bush, I remember being taught that for one to get respect one must give respect. He has given no one any respect and should not expect any in return.

His aids efforts in Africa may be one of the few good things he has in his legacy. Just like the symbol for yin and yang there is a little yin in the yang and a little yang in the yin. This is how nature keeps things balanced.

As a supervisor of people with a degree etc. I can assure you Bush is no leader. Sure we all make mistakes but a leader that learns from his mistakes and corrects them makes him a stronger and better leader. A stubborn ass is no leader.

Just because we have not seen a major attack on the US during his watch doesn't necessarily reflect on his leadership. We had no attacks during most of our presidents' terms in office. So what? He did, at that time, what was expected of him. I thought he might actually be a reasonably good president. Unfortunately by the middle of September 2001 it was obvious he was not. He did what the experts told him to do in this kind of situation as would have happened with any president. The conspiracy theory of him having a part in the 9/11 attacks seems far fetched but they whirled around for quite some time.

Bush's legacy is what he made it. Most of us, whether we voted for him or not, had high hopes that his term(s) would be great. Unfortunately we were greatly disappointed. Unfortunately some folks took a bit longer than others to see the light about him and his life of failure.

Obama is not afraid of AlQaeda or anyone else. He believes, as most of us do and former presidents did, negotiate, use diplomacy, use sanctions, blocades but use war as a last resort. Bush and his most ardent supporters are jingoists. They love war for the sake of war. They will give all sorts of excuses for going to war.

I believe it was one of Hitler's top lieutenants who stated that people don't want war but we can justify it by telling them that the enemy is at the city gates waiting to spring on us. For detractors call them unpatriotic and possibly call them traitors. (Sound familiar?)

I am willing to give Obama a chance to fix things. His attitude and ideas seem pretty good, so far, but if he screws up I will be among the first to criticize him. Democracy thrives on dissent and difference of opinion. Totalitarianism depends on total agreement with fearless leader at all times.

Unlike Bush, Obama has already shown that he learns from his mistakes and strives to improve. I like that in a leader.

I don't hate Bush, I hate what he and his Administration have done to this great land of ours. George W. Bush seems like a decent sort of fellow. The kind of person you'd sit and have a beer with but not presidential material. That has become so very evident over the past 8 years.

De Nile is a river in Egypt and to deny he has screwed up shows how out of touch with reality he and his ardent supporters really are. But it takes all kinds of people to make the world. Thank God for them as life would be boring without the odd and crazy people in the world.

When President Bush came to Kansas State University to do a Landon Lecture he came across as far more intelligent and sensible than he is portrayed elsewhere; he fielded totally idiosyncratic, unrehearsed questions from the audience in a very thoughtful, intelligent, confident manner. I attribute the torture issue to his being misled by Cheney, Rumsfeld, and Yoo. The WMD issue is a challenge because we know Iraq had them at one point, never proved it had destroyed them, and so logically they should have still had them. In fact, it's not clear to me what actually happened to them, so who knows where they are. He has become the man everyone loves to hate and when that occurs, I get suspicious because no one is 100% stupid or bad. He did more than anyone else for HIV work in Africa, severely hurt the Taliban in Afghanistan, did remove Saddam. My main beef is that it cost so much to do all that in treasure and lives that it set us up for a harder hit with this recession than it might otherwise have been. There is a fine line in leadership. I know a lieutenant who could have captured hundreds of Iraqi's in the first Gulf War but didn't realize they were trying to surrender and felt guilty about having erred into their side of the line, so he retreated rather than capturing them. A bit wiser assessment and he would have been a national hero! Instead he was reprimanded for going over the line and had his career busted. The Russian proverb, a bad peace is better than a good war is something President Bush should have thought more about before going into Iraq. But I bet that few told him that. There were some slick dudes pushing for torture and Bush should have just told them their stuff was bullshit, period and fired a few generals early on before they messed up things worse. But he probably didn't have anyone advising him that way either.
