David - St Louis: The Chief Justice flubbed the lines and Obama was patient to allow him to correct himself. The video is available as is the text of the Constitutional language for swearing in the President. I'm sure it was difficult to know how to proceed when the words were flubbed that Obama was to repeat. What does one do when the officiator gets the words wrong and you know it? Do you repeat the mistake or state the correct language? It was an interesting flub and a nice recovery. They got the job done. Of course, wacko Faux News immediately starts fulminating that Obama was not "legally" sworn in since the words were flubbed. As someone who supported the new President in his election bid I was EXTREMELY upset to just read the totally classless actions of other supporters in D.C. during President Bush's departure. Whether or not any of us agree or disagree with a President doesn't matter...he is the President of the U.S. and deserves our respect as such. Booing has no place when addressing such a person. What has happened to our country that people have no class these days? Manners and class have no color or cultural boundries. If these people are supporting our new President I'm disappointed. I like George Bush Sr. Always have and still do. I find him warm and comical, quite intelligent and a brave individual.

I hope Ted Kennedy does ok. I do agree that he perhaps needs to retire as does Byrd and allow some new blood to take over. If they work as hard as we need our Senators and Congresspersons to work at this time I'm not sure either can keep up with the pace that will be required.

For some reason I am not so sympathetic towards Cheney for his hurt back. Don't want to wish pain or hurt on anyone, but let's just say the empathy is not as strong as it is for Bush Sr. and Kennedy.

I would like to express gratitude to our former president, he was not always right but neither were his advisors, and still he must shoulder all the blame. We elected the man twice and for that we must we must be held responsible.

Please keep in mind that I am a democrat, a former Union member, and a baby boomer. I am angry and filled with dispair that I may have to live in this great country without Medical Coverage, decent pension, or the freedom in retirement that my parents enjoyed 20 years ago. Many of us will work into our graves. They even took VA support away for veterans that were not wounded in Vietnam to save money. To many of us I guess.

Regardless of one's political views, it can be argued that truer words have not been spoken in a long time. This isn't a re-kindling of JFK's 'Ask not...' speech, but a clearer indication that it will take the power of every American to work together and unite against the common cause that is what faces our country right now and in the present and to fix the course that has been set forth by any number of larger, macro decisions in Government or Monetary policy, the Market, etc.

This is not a partisan issue and it's not a call to Socialism. It's a call to the American people to put aside petty grievances and work together to rebuild and reinvent ourselves. This is a call for the American people to reach into themselves, understand their own shortcomings, be respectful of those same shortcomings in others and take the initiative to reach out to idealogical foes in order to forge a new beginning. There is nothing simple about that direction, and it will take time, dedication and commitment to that ideal for it to have any hope of succeeding. From what I'm seeing in many cases in this blog, that initiative may take far longer than any sitting President will have to see it through.

As I read through many of the previous blog posts, I shudder in sorrow that many people simply don't get it. They want to cling to positions of intolerance, hate, ignorance and blatent stupidity in order to foster some security that their views have been maligned, have been overlooked, or that they haven't received or wont receive their entitlement. Apparently, those same people don't really understand the 'price' of Citizenship as defined in our new President's speech and can't see beyond themselves in order to help bring that Citizenship to reality.

I am equally horrified at the actions that took place during the Inauguration - the booing, name calling, etc. of a sitting US President and respected other Government officials. While certainly not royalty, these people deserve our respect, as they work jobs that few of us have, and have responsibilities, in many cases, that few of us could possibly appreciate - let alone undertake. The petulance and ignorance of many of my fellow Americans is astounding and as much as I was proud to be an American today (as I am at every Inauguration, not just 'historic' ones), I am equally appalled that many of them would, willingly and with intent, denigrate the nature of the highest office of the land. Politics aside, no one deserves that lack of respect, regardless of whether they are a sitting President, a barista at Starbucks, or a volunteer at a soup kitchen. This is part of the 'responsibility' of being an American and an American citizen.

Again, regarding the Kennedy and Byrd issues, many Americans clearly fail to have common decency and respect. It is irrelevant about the Senators' pasts, and it irrelevant about their ages. These individuals are elected representatives of the people - and serve the people. Denigrating the Senators not only disrespects them, but it disrespects the people who voted for them and who put those Senators in office. Who are we to judge our fellow Americans' decisions? What right or entitlement do we have to disregard their views? Yet, the ability to cast one's opinion freely and without remorse is now that sense of entitlement, when those exact same people would expect an outpouring of sentiment if they, themselves, took ill - especially in a public forum.

Responsibility. Recognition. Knowledge. Character. These are terms that have been bandied about for years under the weight of political and ideological dogma. I am hopeful that Americans will realize that we and no one else, have the responsibility to fix our own messes, and to educate ourselves with all of the tools at our disposals so that we can work and work hard to rebuild our Nation in our own eyes and the eyes of the world. Nothing will come easy, and the sooner we accept that and get down to the task at hand, the sooner we will reap the rewards of that labor.

The person at the top of the heap is the least important - it's the ones underneath that are supporting them.

Senator Kennedy is a remarkable man as well as a strong individual. At least, He live to see what his two brothers did not see " a dream that comes true " May the Good Lord be with him in his dark times and give him time to do what he did not finish. He is a bless man and should go easy with himself and live the rest of his life quietly leaving to others great memories and good deeds, an example to follow. I am proud to be an American! My Payers and speedy recoverey goes to Sen. Kennedy. Duh..haven't you heard people are human, they fumbled and get right up, they've learned from their errs. Show some humility folks, you'll never know the responsibility and burdens, this young President will encounter during his term, be it 4 years or more. Everyone believes there is a change in Washington D.C, the world is watching, I'll do my part so do your part, but if you don't have anything nice to say, think again,it may come back an bite you one day.
