From NBC’s Domenico MontanaroThe top-ranking Senate Republican gave a speech to the Republican National Committee -- a day before the body elects a chairman -- that was one part tough medicine, one part pep talk.

One minute they are against the stimulus package because it's too big, the next they want more tax cuts. One minute they are against the $3,000 employer job creation tax credits, the next they are against the stimulus package for not doing enough to create jobs. The problem here is that they can't seem to put together a coherent idea of what it is they want, so they end up not only being unable to negotiate with the Democrats, but unable to even come up with a goal amongst themselves.

What kind of change for GOP?

Duncan is just as incompetent and Sarah Palin was. I can't believe the RNC hired this fool. It's no wonder they lost in November. Hello.

What kind of change for GOP?

Yeah, they just need to empty out the garbage bags the clothes that Palin wore are still setting in. What does it matter to them? Nothing they can do in the extreme minority position they find themselves in. The truth is Republicans always see these situations in two parts. First an opportunity for reorganization, re-evaluation and a wealth of opportunity to grow. Second, Dems being completly in control will grow complacent, show their true identity and tick a majority of Americans off in the process. Mainly, the tax payers.

Dem's should focus on solving the problems ahead of them, keep the country safe, keep the corruption and scandals out of the administration and White House and get ready to defend the actions they have taken in the first two years of Obama/Biden. Don't waste your time focusing on a lowly American minority in Washington called conservatives.

What kind of change for GOP?

Sure the parties outlook is grim but it is because of past policies. That simply won't work."

If the GOP continues to act only on plotting to regain it's power for power's sake alone, the Party will never be able to wrench away the power of
the opposition. The Republicans are engaged in a "war" with the Democrats in a bid to regain that power. Their opposition to the economic stimulus
package is an engagement in that war. They use the scare-tactic of "sharing the wealth." Ah yes, "sharing the wealth!" That's the demeaning and
demonizing term used by Republican legislators and media "talking heads" to refer to "providing help for America's poor." Those of us who are the most likely to need to "share the wealth." (Noto bene: don't wax smug, Democrats, you are willing participants as the opposition.)

In truth, alas, most of us are forced to resort to Food Stamps and State Medical Aid at some point, in order to survive to keep working for the paycheck to pay the rent. Some of us, especially those with no children, get can only qualify when we're unemployed. When we're working, at best we get vastly-reduced Food Stamps and no State Medical Aid. Yet we make too little to afford employer health coverage. And many, like myself, can't get employer health coverage anyway, due to the infamous "pre-existing conditions."

According to the US Census Bureau of families earning below 100% of Poverty level (All Races), those did not work last year number only 26.4% (of that total, more than half were children). That means 73.6% of the poor families had at least one person who DID work at least a portion of last year.

According to the Los Angeles Homeless Services Coalition the United States Homeless Statistics (for 2008):
 * 3.5 million people (1.35 million of which are children) will experience homelessness in a given year.
 * Children under the age of 18 account for 39% of the homeless population. 42% of these are under the age of 5.
 * 43% of the homeless population are women; 40% of these women are unaccompanied. 22% of homeless women claim domestic abuse as reason for homelessness. 25% of these claim to have been abused within the past year.
 * Families with children comprise 33% of the homeless population.
 * Vets constitute 40% of the homeless population.
 * 1 in every 5 homeless persons has a severe or persistent mental illness.
 * 25% of the homeless nationwide are employed.

As the economy worsens and more lose their jobs, these percentages will increase. So let's dispense with the no-victims myths, shall we?

I was born in Covina, CA and grew up in the Los Angeles area. In 1988, I moved to Grants Pass, OR. That's where I met my husband, who was born in Medford, OR. Having both lost jobs, we were homeless when we met, at the Gospel Rescue Mission. We got married in 1995. With Oregon's economy crumbling, we once lived for several weeks on the nickel deposit on aluminum cans, and on glass and plastic bottles. We lived by recycling scrap metal. We lived on day-labor. We lived out of dumpsters. We camped in the woods, and lived on nature's provender. Finally, we had to leave Oregon to find work, traveling from town to town on recyclables we found by the roadside. We tried Las Vegas, and spent five weeks there, surviving by recycling and day-labor. But they wouldn't hire the homeless for full time work. So we moved to Prescott, AZ, in 1997, where we still live.

My husband John and I have been married for over 13 years. We've been homeless several times, and in three states. We've been homeless - with or without a vehicle to sleep in - for nearly half our marriage. We are now facing the prospect again.

We have bought and paid off three travel-trailer homes, only to lose them again to job losses. I suppose some would call us "po' white" or "trailer
trash," and look down on us for all the stereotypic negatives that implies. But we're NOT trash, we're hard-working PEOPLE. We're not lazy. And we're not stupid, either. I got my BA in Philosophy in 1973, having worked my way through college tutoring Natural Deductive Logic. John was pre-med. When he enlisted in the Air Force during the Viet Nam era, he became a Med Tech.

We take whatever job we can find. Our full work history is quite varied.

I have been a college-level tutor; school bus driver; instructional aide for aphasic children; real estate loan service clerk; gas station cashier/assistant manager; inventory auditor; punch press operator; forklift driver; electrical-harness tester; and CNA. All that before I even met John.

As I said before, John was an Air Med Tech. Because he enlisted near the end of the Viet Nam conflict, he was never sent overseas. He worked in the base hospital at Mountain Home, ID, in the OB/GYN. He spent most of his service helping to deliver babies. He has also worked as a ranch hand and a sheepherder, an apprentice mason, managing a thrift store, selling products by the roadside, recycling scrap metals, and has worked most kinds of construction (including underwater demolition in FL). He is an all-round handyman, as he says, "jack of all trades and master of some."

Since our marriage, we have worked as harvest workers; day laborers at a recycling yard; carnival ride operators; ranch caretakers; orchard caretakers; cement spreaders; ditch diggers; landscapers; and many more jobs I can't remember. Most recently, I worked as an overnight stocker for Wal-Mart for nearly two years, until I was forced to quit because of ill health and related job stress. My husband had been ill and unable to work for two years. Thanks to State Medical Aid, he was able to be treated. At first, he was diagnosed with colon cancer and given only a few months to live. Thankfully, they finally diagnosed him as having a severe intestinal infection with serratia marcescens. That's a Third-World disease that normally doesn't occur in this country. We never did learn how he caught it. It took three rounds of antibiotics- one week of one, one week of another, and one week of both - to finally get rid of the infection. Unfortunately, he ended up with a diverticulum, as a result. He finally recovered , and slowly worked his way back into the job market by doing day labor jobs. This work helped him recondition himself, until he finally got fulltime work in a recycling yard. That lasted nearly a year. We then tried starting our own landscape/property-cleanup business. It went well for a while, until the price of gasoline put us out of business.

Now, I'm ill (those pre-existing conditions) and have been unable to work for over a year. John is unemployed. We're behind on our rent, despite
selling our work truck to pay for one month.

We vote, too, you know. We were born here - we're citizens. When we have work, WE PAY TAXES. And with the economic crisis, our numbers are increasing. Homelessness looms on the horizon. Once you become homeless, it is difficult to get completely back on your feet. You are literally never more than one missed paycheck from being homeless again. All we ask is a little of our own back.

So how come you politicians and the media have so little thought for us? Is mentioning us "politically incorrect? Or have you forgotten we exist?

Or would it be more convenient for you to exterminate us? It wouldn't be hard. Just keep on with your beloved turf warfare, don't get serious about the stimulus package, don't create more jobs, just muddle along forgetting your job is to be America's good stewards. We'll die of starvation or ill health if you keep it up long enough.

We as citizens demand both sides cut out the warfare, act together as non-partisans, and "get 'er done"!!!

What kind of change for GOP?

It's just plain opposition to the Democratic Party. It's not their idea. They have no ideas and that is why they no longer have party rule. It is sad...Our country is in shambles due to shameful mismangement under their party watch.

The only soloutions they can come up with is the tired old Rush Limbaugh far right talk radio garbage and that is to critize what they know nothing about. The McCain campaign put the onus on the national committee during the campaign.

Kaufman said there was a certain amount of coordination between the campaign and the RNC on the issue, but ultimately, it was the campaign’s decision.

There isn't even honor among theives....
What kind of change for GOP?

I think the GOP is totally off their rockers. The supported a $700bn stimulus package last year that had no oversight, no controls, and no accountability - it was handed out to Hank Paulson's best friends on Wall Street and they thank the US taxpayer by giving themselves 18 billion dollars in bonuses. But a plan with strict controls, oversight, and targeted to specific items is just totally wrong. The trillion dollars we'll have to borrow to pay for this is a crippling debt on our children, but somehow the 10 billion in debt run up by Reagan, Bush, and Bush was a necessity to win the wars against Communism and Terrorism. How about winning the war against ECONOMIC COLLAPSE?

Mitch is right that the GOP needs to do something. But repackaging the same old ideas and hoping they will appeal to people who have already rejected them is just not going to work.

What kind of change for GOP?

I realize there are some pretty smart conservatives politicians. But when you hung your hat on Bush...You guys didn't realize that this guy really wasn't that smart! They put all their faith in managers and none in the workers. They pander to the few and to hell with the many. The demand that workers give up raises and then plunder the company, any government that gets in their way, and go on their merry way. I am far from socialist but pure capitalism fails just as pure socialism fails. When government gives up all rights to manage the managers and owners it soon finds itself the "victim" and that is exactly what has happened. The GOP lost perspective. The GOP lost reasonable capacity to do the job of governing for the people and that is why they finally lost the trust of the people. If the Democratic leadership doesn't work to find the "middle ground" of reasonable governance of all that influences the direction of the nation and moves too far in the opposit direction it will create its own mess. We need movement to the left but not an earthquake. In terms of economics we simply need responsable government and that is not what we have had much of since the election of Ronald Reagan. He communicated us into a revolution that ultimately failed us.

What kind of change for GOP?

I don't have high hopes for the GOP, because they don't seem to even realize what they are doing wrong.
This newly-defeated Republican Party continues to show an embarrassing amount of hubris and hypocrisy to the rest of the world.

Because Obama won the young voters overwhelmingly, he has the next generation of voters in his hand. He told them not to listen to the dusty old arguments, and they won't. Yet the Republicans continue to argue the dusty old arguments.

I suggest the Republicans not even take on Obama, but instead get their act together so they look like a viable Party in 1216.

Opposing a President who was elected with a wide majority after eight years of the most incompetent Republican President in my lifetime,is even more idiotic than impeaching a popular, twice-elected sitting Democratic President before the 1998 elections. Because of that, they don't have a coherent message yet. Once they get their minds re-wrapped around having a smaller government, their message will become more consistent.

The Democrats on the other hand are on no such 12-step program. Their message is clear. Spend money, money that doesn't exist. Spend as much as you can, as fast as your can. The message is consistent and clear. But just like the junkie that doesn get help, and that's what the Democrats are, they'll bottom out soon, and it won't be pretty.

What kind of change for GOP?

CHANGE REPUBLICANS CAN BELIEVE IN!
